Delisting normally stops new purchases; it does not automatically revoke a game you already bought, a game that remains installed, or a playable disc copy. Your result depends on the account that owns the license, whether Sony still serves the download, console activation settings, the title’s PS4/PS5 compatibility, and whether required online services still operate.
What “delisted” means on PlayStation
A delisted game has been removed from sale in a PlayStation Store region. New customers generally cannot purchase it digitally, but delisting and license revocation are different actions. A previous purchaser’s entitlement is normally retained on the PlayStation account that completed the transaction.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That entitlement is a permission recorded against an account, not a permanent promise that every component of the game will remain available forever. Sony may stop serving a download, a publisher may end authentication, or a game’s online functions may shut down. Those events affect practical access in different ways.
- Already installed: The local application may continue to launch, particularly for an offline campaign, unless the title requires an online license check or its license has been revoked.
- Deleted but previously purchased: The game may still appear in Game Library and be redownloadable while Sony continues serving that platform version.
- Never purchased: Delisting normally removes the ordinary digital purchase path. A subscription catalog listing is not the same as owning a permanent license.
- Physical copy: The disc can supply the game data and license path for the disc edition, but it does not guarantee patches, downloadable content, regional compatibility, or functioning servers.
Because store policies and game services can change, treat a library listing or a working installation as evidence of current access, not a guarantee for every future date.

Check which kind of access you have
| Access situation | What normally remains possible | What can still block play |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase on your account | Launch an installed copy and often redownload it from Game Library | Wrong account, corrupted license data, unavailable download, or a required online service |
| PlayStation Plus catalog access | Play while the title is included and your subscription and eligibility continue | Catalog removal, expired subscription, account-region differences, or a title-specific license check |
| Physical PS4 disc | Install and play the disc edition on a compatible console | Disc damage, region mismatch, missing patches or DLC, and closed servers |
| Physical PS3 or PS Vita software | Use the original device and purchased content already associated with it | Hardware failure, account issues, platform-store changes, or unavailable online features |
| Game only available through an online service | Nothing beyond what the operator continues to support | Authentication, multiplayer, user-generated content, or server shutdown |
The most important distinction is ownership versus access through a subscription. A purchase normally creates an account entitlement. A PlayStation Plus license is conditional: it depends on the subscription being active and the title remaining eligible in your region.
How to redownload a delisted digital game
Use the account that originally bought the game. A different account on the same console may see a padlock even when the purchaser can play normally.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. On PS5 or PS4, check the profile currently active and compare it with the account shown in your transaction history or purchase email.
- Open Game Library. On PS5, select Game Library from the home screen, then look under your collection and purchased items. On PS4, open Library and choose the purchased section.
- Search for the title. A delisted game may not appear in the Store search but can still be listed in your library. Select the game and choose Download.
- Check transaction history. If the game is absent, verify that the purchase was completed on this account and in the same PlayStation Store region. A canceled, refunded, or failed transaction does not create a usable entitlement.
- Restore licenses. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. This refreshes the console’s local license records; it does not recreate a purchase that never existed.
- Retry the download. Use a stable internet connection and leave enough storage for the game and any required update. If the title is no longer served for that platform, the library entry may remain without a working download button.
Sony’s support procedures also direct users to verify Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5 or primary-console activation on PS4. Those settings control how purchased games are authorized on the console; they do not transfer ownership to another account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlaying without an internet connection
PS5: Console Sharing and Offline Play
On PS5, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console where you want purchased games to work offline. The path is Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. When enabled, users on that PS5 can play games purchased and downloaded by the account, and the console can play games and media while offline.
Sony allows this activation on one PS5 console at a time for an account. If you move to another PS5, disable the setting on the old console when possible, then enable it on the new one. If the old console is unavailable, account-management options may be needed before a new activation succeeds.
PS4: Activate as Your Primary PS4
On PS4, the comparable setting is primary-console activation. Go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 and follow the prompts. A primary PS4 can use purchased games offline and lets other local users access eligible purchases from the activating account.
Offline activation cannot bypass a game that requires a live server, a recurring authentication check, or a license supplied only by an active subscription. Test the title before traveling: while online, launch it, close it, disconnect the console from the internet, and launch it again. This reveals whether the installed version has a local playable path.

Why a delisted game shows a padlock
A padlock is usually a license, account, sharing, or network problem rather than proof that delisting erased the game. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm you are signed in to the purchasing account, not a family member’s or secondary profile.
- Check Transaction History and Game Library for the title or the edition you bought. Standard, deluxe, cross-generation, and region-specific editions can have separate entitlements.
- Restore licenses using the PS5 or PS4 path above.
- On PS5, verify that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the intended console. On PS4, verify primary-console activation.
- Reconnect to PlayStation Network, restart the console, and retry the game. Some licenses are refreshed only after an online sign-in.
- Check whether the title came from PlayStation Plus. If the subscription expired or the game left the catalog, the padlock is expected even if the application remains installed.
- If the game was purchased by another household account, have that account enable the appropriate sharing setting. Do not assume a console login alone transfers the entitlement.
If the purchase is confirmed but the game is absent from the library or cannot be downloaded, contact PlayStation Support with the transaction details. Support cannot restore a license that was refunded, revoked for a policy reason, or never attached to the account.
Using a disc copy
A disc is a separate access route from a digital license. Insert the original disc, install the game, and keep the disc in the drive whenever the console requires it as proof of ownership. Delisting the digital listing does not normally disable a valid physical copy.
Several qualifications matter:
- Region: The disc’s game region can determine whether it works on your account and whether its downloadable content matches. DLC purchased for a different region may not be recognized.
- Updates: Patches are distributed separately from the base disc. A game may install and run without the latest patch, but bug fixes, performance improvements, or compatibility updates may no longer be hosted.
- DLC: Delisted add-ons may be unavailable to new buyers. Previously purchased add-ons can have their own licenses and may need to be redownloaded separately.
- Hardware: A disc edition must be compatible with the console model. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 Blu-ray discs.
- Servers: A disc does not keep multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, or user-generated content online after the operator shuts those services down.
Will a PS5 play a delisted PS4 game?
PS5 supports many PS4 games, including compatible titles that are no longer sold. Compatibility is title-specific, not a universal guarantee. Before buying a PS5 specifically for one delisted game, check Sony’s individual PS4-on-PS5 compatibility information and the game publisher’s notices.
For a digital copy, sign in to the account that owns the PS4 entitlement and look in the PS5 Game Library. For a disc copy, use a PS5 model with a disc drive and insert the PS4 disc. Some titles may have separate PS5 versions, upgrades, or restrictions; owning the PS4 edition does not automatically promise a free upgrade.
Compatibility also does not revive dead services. A PS5 may run the local campaign while the game’s matchmaking, authentication, user-generated levels, or online events remain unavailable.

Separate the software from the services it calls. An offline campaign stored on the console can remain playable after a delisting or server shutdown. Online-dependent modes can fail even when the icon, installation, and save files remain.

- Usually local: story campaigns, training modes, and split-screen features that do not contact a server.
- Usually server-dependent: matchmaking, ranked play, cloud inventories, live events, leaderboards, account authentication, and user-generated content hosted by the publisher.
- Mixed designs: Some games permit the opening campaign offline but require periodic sign-in for progression, licenses, or downloadable content.
Look for a current service notice from the publisher or Sony before relying on a specific online mode. A shutdown may be limited to one platform, region, or feature, so do not infer the status of every mode from a single error message.

What happens to PS3 and PS Vita purchases?
Sony’s 2026 announcement says the PS3 and PS Vita stores will stop accepting new purchases beginning in July 2027 in the relevant region covered by the support notice. The announcement describes nearly two decades of PS3 support. Sony says players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the change for the foreseeable future.
That wording preserves access to content already owned; it does not promise that every game, add-on, patch, or online feature will remain available indefinitely. Sony’s current support notice says you can continue playing content you already own, subject to each game’s existing online features and service availability.
Before the store change, sign in to the account that owns the content, check your PS3 or Vita download lists, and install essential purchases on working hardware. Keep records of which account and region hold each license. New purchases after the stated date will not be an option through those stores, and availability can differ by region.
A practical decision tree
- Did you buy it digitally? Use the purchasing account, check Game Library and transaction history, then restore licenses.
- Is it deleted? Try the library download. If Sony still serves that platform entitlement, the download should be offered; if not, the installed copy may be the only remaining route.
- Is there a padlock? Check account, subscription status, sharing or primary activation, network sign-in, and licenses before concluding that delisting caused it.
- Do you own a disc? Install from the disc and confirm region, console model, updates, and DLC separately.
- Are you moving to PS5? Verify the individual PS4 title’s compatibility. A PS5 does not restore a revoked license or a closed server.
- Do you need multiplayer or user-generated content? Check the game’s current server status; a local campaign may survive a service shutdown while those modes do not.
How to preserve access responsibly
For games you care about, keep the purchasing account secure, retain two-factor authentication recovery methods, and avoid deleting a working installation until you have confirmed a library redownload. Enable the correct offline-sharing setting on the console you actually use. Download purchased DLC and essential patches while they are available, and test offline launch before an internet outage or hardware move.
