Usually, yes. If you bought the game digitally, it should remain available from the PlayStation account that purchased it. If you own a disc, you can generally keep using it on a compatible PS4 or a PS5 with a disc drive. Delisting normally stops new Store purchases; it does not automatically erase an earlier purchase.
There are important exceptions. A PlayStation Plus catalog entitlement can expire, a PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs, a game may be one of the PS4 titles that is not supported on PS5, and server shutdowns can disable multiplayer or other online features even when offline play still works.

What “delisted” means—and what it does not mean
A game is delisted when it is no longer offered for a new purchase in a particular PlayStation Store. That storefront status is different from the status of an existing entitlement. A game can disappear from search results while remaining in the Game Library of accounts that bought it.

- Removed from your library: the title does not appear under the account you are currently using, so the first question is whether you signed in to the purchasing account.
- Locked: a padlock usually indicates a license, account, sharing, or subscription issue rather than proof that the game was delisted.
- PlayStation Plus access: a catalog or monthly benefit is conditional access, not the same as buying the game outright.
- Server shutdown: the publisher may have ended online services while leaving an offline campaign or local modes playable.
Store availability, ownership, console compatibility, and server operation are separate checks. You need to identify which one has changed before troubleshooting.
Which kind of access do you have?
Your route to a delisted game depends on whether the entitlement is an outright digital purchase, a subscription benefit, or a physical disc.

The table describes the general routes. A specific game can have extra edition, region, compatibility, or licensing conditions.

Use this sequence before assuming the delisting removed your access.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. A game bought by another family member or a second account will not necessarily appear in your personal library. Check the account’s email address and transaction history.
- Open Game Library. On PS5, go to the Game Library from the home screen and look under Your Collection. On PS4, open Library and search the purchased titles. Sony’s support guidance says games purchased from PlayStation Store appear in the library.
- Check the transaction history. Confirm that the transaction is an outright purchase rather than a PlayStation Plus claim, trial, bundle component, or a purchase made on a different account or region.
- Start the download from the library. If the title is listed, select it and choose Download. The fact that the Store page is no longer searchable does not by itself prevent a library download.
- Restore licenses if the title is locked or missing. On PS5, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. Sony states that restoring licenses does not affect saved data.
- Check console sharing or primary-console activation. If another account owns the game, verify PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play for that owner’s account. On PS4, check whether the purchasing account has activated the console as its primary PS4. Sharing settings can determine whether another user sees a lock.
- Restart and try the library again. After the account and license checks, restart the console, sign in to the same account, and attempt the download again.
If the transaction is present but the game still cannot be downloaded, keep the receipt or transaction ID and contact PlayStation Support. Do not buy the title again simply because its public Store listing disappeared.

Why a purchased game may show a padlock
A padlock is a symptom, not a delisting verdict. Work through the cause that matches your situation:
The wrong account is active
Sign out and use the account that completed the purchase. A console can contain several profiles, but the entitlement belongs to the purchasing account.
The game was obtained through PlayStation Plus
Check the subscription status and whether the particular game is still part of the benefit you claimed. If the subscription has ended or the catalog entry has been removed, restoring licenses cannot turn that benefit into permanent ownership.
Sharing is no longer enabled
For a shared purchase, confirm PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play or the owner’s primary-PS4 activation. If the owner changed the activated console, other profiles can lose access even though the owner still sees the game.
The console has not refreshed the license
Use the restore-license paths above, then retry the download or launch. Saved games are not deleted by that operation.

PlayStation Plus is not the same as buying the game
PlayStation Plus can make a delisted title playable while it remains in the applicable monthly or catalog offering. That access depends on two conditions: your subscription must be active, and the title must still be included for your plan and region.

A game downloaded through Plus may appear in your library but remain locked when the subscription lapses or the catalog entry changes. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically directs subscribers to verify that the game is still available in the catalog.
A PS Plus version also has separate upgrade rules. PS4 games redeemed as a Plus benefit are not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless Sony indicates otherwise. Treat a Plus claim as a renewable service entitlement, not as an outright purchase you can rely on indefinitely.
Can a physical PS4 disc still work?
Yes, when the disc and console combination is supported. A PS4 disc can be played on a PS4, and on a PS5 that has a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted whenever you play on PS5 because it serves as the ownership check.
A PS4 disc cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition; that model has no disc drive. If the game had no digital entitlement attached to your account, a Digital Edition cannot replace the disc route.

Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. That is not a guarantee for every title: Sony identifies some PS4-only games and says its exception list can change. Check the exact game’s compatibility status before buying a used copy. Some PS4 functions may not carry over on PS5 even when the game launches.
What to verify before buying a used disc
- The copy is the correct PS4 edition, not a different platform or a region-specific release.
- The title is not on Sony’s PS4-only or otherwise unsupported list for PS5.
- You have a PS5 with a disc drive if you intend to play on PS5.
- The seller’s listing includes the disc itself; a case, code, or account transfer is not equivalent to owning the disc.
- Any online modes you care about still have active servers.
Delisting does not prove that a physical edition exists. Verify that the game actually received a PS4 disc release before searching secondhand listings.

A delisted PS4 game may have a PS5 upgrade, but there is no universal rule. Eligibility, price, availability, and the end date of an offer vary by game. A PS4 digital purchase may show an upgrade option when the publisher and Sony provide one.
For a disc-based upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive and must insert the qualifying PS4 disc whenever you play the upgraded version. A disc cannot authorize play on a PS5 Digital Edition. Region conditions can also apply to some disc-to-digital upgrade offers, so the disc edition and your account region must match the offer’s requirements.
Do not assume that an upgrade exists because a PS5 version was announced, or that it is free because the PS4 game was delisted. Open the game’s product page or library entry on the account that owns it and read the displayed eligibility and price. A PS Plus redemption is excluded from upgrade eligibility unless Sony explicitly says otherwise.

Can you still play if the servers shut down?
Sometimes. Delisting and server operation are independent. A publisher can remove a game from sale while leaving multiplayer online, or shut down servers years after the game was delisted.
When servers close, online multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud-dependent functions, user-generated-content browsers, or other network features may stop working. An offline campaign, local multiplayer, or other self-contained mode can remain playable if it does not require authentication or a live service.
Check the official service notice for the specific game. A retained digital license or an original disc cannot restore a server that the publisher has permanently shut down. Conversely, a server notice does not necessarily mean your offline save or local modes are gone.

A practical decision path
- Identify the entitlement: outright digital purchase, PS Plus access, or physical PS4 disc.
- Match the console: PS4 works with supported PS4 copies; PS5 needs either a digital entitlement or a disc drive for a disc; PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 discs.
- Verify the game: check PS5 compatibility, PS4-only exceptions, edition, and region conditions.
- Verify the license: use the purchasing account, transaction history, Game Library, and restore-license menu.
- Verify services: look for a title-specific server notice if multiplayer or online features matter.
- Only then consider another copy: a used disc can solve a missing digital purchase only when a genuine, compatible disc edition exists and the console can read it.
No general delisting rule can establish the status of every game. The individual title’s entitlement, edition, compatibility listing, and server notice are the final checks.
