Yes—usually. Releasing a new Pokémon TCG Pocket expansion does not automatically delete older booster packs. When Space-Time Smackdown launched, Genetic Apex stopped appearing on the home-screen spotlight but remained available through Select other booster packs. The important qualification is that availability is pack-specific: permanent expansions may remain selectable, while limited-time packs can leave the list and may only return during a later availability window.
What changes when a new expansion arrives
A new set primarily changes how the booster-pack area is presented. The newest release receives the prominent home-screen position, so an older expansion can appear to have vanished even though it is still in the game. The home screen is therefore not a complete inventory of packs.

The clearest documented example came after Space-Time Smackdown launched on January 30, 2025. Nintendo Life reported that Genetic Apex was no longer shown on the home screen, but remained openable. Choosing Select other booster packs opened a menu containing the expansions released at that point, including Genetic Apex.
A separate visual change can make the disappearance seem more serious: Pokémon TCG Pocket resets your favorited booster packs when a new booster pack is added. Your old favorites being removed is a settings reset, not confirmation that the packs themselves were deleted.

How to select an older booster pack
Use the pack-selection menu rather than relying on the home-screen carousel. The labels below match the documented in-game flow.
- From the home screen, open the booster-pack area.
- Tap any booster pack that is currently visible.
- In the pack-selection screen, tap Select other booster packs in the bottom-right corner.
- Review the available expansion list and choose the older expansion you want to open.
- Confirm that the selected pack is from the expansion you intend to target before spending a pack hourglass or other opening resource.
If the older expansion appears in that list, it is currently selectable even if it is not featured on the home screen. You can repeat this route whenever you want to switch between the newest release and an earlier one.
Where did Genetic Apex go?
Genetic Apex moved out of the home-screen spotlight when Space-Time Smackdown released, which is why many players assumed it had been removed. The documented solution was to open a visible pack and use Select other booster packs. The resulting menu showed the expansions available in the game, allowing players to continue chasing cards from Genetic Apex.

This distinction matters for any older set: “not featured” and “not available” are different states. Check the selectable-expansion list before concluding that an expansion has been retired.
Why your favorites may look empty after an update
The Pokémon TCG Pocket Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, states that when a new booster pack is added, favorited booster packs are automatically reset. A Pokémon Support explanation describes the same behavior: previously favorited packs are removed automatically when a new pack is added.

As a result, an update can produce two simultaneous changes:
- The newest expansion appears in the most prominent position.
- Your saved favorites no longer show the older packs you had marked.
Neither change, by itself, proves that the older expansion has been deleted. Navigate to Select other booster packs and inspect the current list. If the expansion is listed, select it again and re-favorite it if the game offers that option.

That exception concerns the favorite status, not a guarantee that the pack will be continuously available.
Do old pack points expire?
No. Pack points do not expire. However, they are not a universal currency that can be spent on any expansion. Opening packs from an expansion earns points for that specific expansion, and those points can be exchanged only for cards that appear in that same expansion.

For example, if you are saving points earned from Genetic Apex packs, moving to Space-Time Smackdown does not convert those points. They remain usable for eligible Genetic Apex cards, even if you temporarily open packs from another expansion.

Are all older packs permanent?
No blanket rule says every historical pack will remain openable forever. The official explanations distinguish normal booster-pack behavior from limited-time availability. A limited-time pack can be removed from the available list, and a later announcement can bring it back for a defined return period.

That kind of announcement demonstrates why “it is gone today” and “it has been permanently discontinued” are not interchangeable conclusions. A pack may have a separate availability window or a scheduled return.
When an older pack is missing, rely on the current in-game pack list and the game’s news or availability notices. Those notices are the appropriate place to look for an end date, a temporary removal, or a return schedule.
Older pack or newest pack: which should you open?
The right choice depends on the card you need, not simply on which set is newest. Use the comparison points below before spending limited opening resources.

Before opening, identify the exact card and expansion associated with it. If the card is exclusive to an older set, opening the newest pack will not substitute for the older expansion’s pool, and its points will not help you purchase the older card.

Troubleshooting when an old expansion is missing
The pack is not on the home screen
Open any visible booster pack and use Select other booster packs. The home-screen placement only indicates what the game is promoting, not the full set of selectable expansions.
Your favorites disappeared
Rebuild the favorites list after the new-pack release. The documented automatic reset is expected behavior. Check the full selection menu first, then mark the packs you want to find quickly.
The expansion is absent from the selection list
Read the current in-game news and availability notices. The pack may be limited-time, between availability windows, or otherwise unavailable in the current release state. Do not spend resources expecting it to reappear immediately; wait for an official return or availability notice if one is announced.
You cannot find the card with the points you saved
Verify that the points and the card belong to the same expansion. Pack points do not expire, but they are expansion-specific. Points earned from one expansion cannot be exchanged for cards listed in another.
A returning limited-time pack behaves differently
A limited-time pack that is re-added later is treated differently from ordinary packs for the favorite-reset rule: the Pokémon Support explanation says it is exempt from that automatic removal behavior. Still, confirm the pack’s current listing and the dates in the notice, because the exception does not turn a limited-time pack into a permanently available one.
A reliable check before every opening session
- Open the booster-pack area rather than judging availability from the home screen.
- Use Select other booster packs and locate the intended expansion.
- Confirm that the target card belongs to that expansion.
- Check whether the pack is a regular expansion or marked as limited-time.
- Read current news or availability notices if the expansion is not listed.
- Remember that points earned from the pack stay tied to its expansion.
This process prevents the two most common mistakes: assuming a de-featured pack was deleted and spending new-expansion points while trying to complete an older set.
What the documented rules mean for future releases
The Genetic Apex example establishes that at least some older expansions remain openable after a new set launches. The July 30, 2026 Gameplay FAQ establishes two continuing rules: favorites reset when a new booster pack is added, and pack points do not expire. The limited-time wording establishes the boundary: those rules do not promise permanent access to every pack.
For each future release, treat the in-game selection list as the immediate source of truth. If the older expansion is listed, you can select it. If it is not listed, look for an availability notice explaining whether it is limited-time, temporarily unavailable, or scheduled to return.

Older Pokémon TCG Pocket packs can still be opened after a new set releases when they remain in the selectable expansion list. Open any visible pack, choose Select other booster packs, and select the older expansion.
