You can still install Windows 10 from Microsoft installation media and activate it in 2026, provided the computer has either a matching digital license or a valid 25-character product key. A previously activated PC can normally be reinstalled without entering a key. A new computer that has never had an activated Windows 10 installation needs a qualifying license.
The important limitation is support: Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. They continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal feature updates, security fixes, or technical assistance. Eligible consumer devices can use Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program through October 12, 2027.

What “still install and activate” means in 2026
Installation and activation are separate. Installation puts Windows on the drive; activation confirms that the installed edition is covered by a license. Microsoft still documents installing Windows 10 on a blank drive or on a computer with another operating system, using a bootable USB flash drive or DVD. Setup can also detect an original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) key stored in the device’s firmware.

#1 Best Overall
- Fresh USB Install With Key code Included
- 24/7 Tech Support from expert Technician
- Top product with Great Reviews
- A PC that was activated previously can usually reinstall the same edition using its digital license.
- A PC that has never had activated Windows 10 needs a valid product key or a purchased digital license.
- A motherboard replacement or other major hardware change can break the hardware association used by a digital license and may require troubleshooting or entering the key again.
“Can install” therefore does not mean “free on every computer.” The media is available separately from the license, and a blank USB drive or DVD does not activate Windows.
Windows 10’s support status
Ordinary Home and Pro support ended
Microsoft’s lifecycle date for Windows 10 Home and Pro was October 14, 2025. The operating system does not stop working on that date. Existing applications and files remain available, but ordinary installations no longer receive Microsoft technical support, feature updates, or security fixes.
Version 22H2 was the final normal release for Home and Pro. Installing 22H2 does not restore support; it is simply the last standard release in that product line.
Long-Term Servicing Channel editions are different
Windows 10 LTSC products follow separate lifecycles. Their support dates and eligibility differ from Home and Pro, so an LTSC installation should be evaluated against the lifecycle for that specific edition rather than assumed to have the same October 14, 2025 end date.
Consumer Extended Security Updates
Microsoft says eligible consumer Windows 10 devices can receive protection through its ESU program until October 12, 2027. ESU is a post-support security option, not a return to normal feature development or general technical support. Eligibility, enrollment and any associated conditions must be checked in Microsoft’s current ESU guidance for the device and region.
Choose the licensing path before you reinstall
| Computer and license state | What to do in Setup | Activation expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Previously activated Windows 10, same edition | Select I don’t have a product key | Connect to the internet after setup; Windows should reactivate from the digital license. |
| Valid 25-character key for the edition being installed | Enter the key when prompted, or enter it after installation | Activation requires the key to be valid and appropriate for that edition. |
| New device with no previous Windows 10 activation and no key | You may install, but there is no license to activate it | Obtain a qualifying product key or digital license. |
| Motherboard or major hardware replaced | Install the same edition; use the Activation troubleshooter or re-enter the key | Reactivation depends on the license type and whether the digital license was linked to a Microsoft account. |
If you rely on a digital license, the edition must match. A Home digital license will not automatically activate a Pro installation, and vice versa. Check the edition before erasing the existing system.
Check activation and edition before erasing Windows
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Record whether Windows reports that it is activated and whether the activation is described as a digital license.
- Record the installed edition, such as Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro.
- If the page indicates that the digital license is linked to a Microsoft account, make sure you know which account it is.
- Back up personal files, browser data, recovery keys and application installers before creating new media or deleting partitions.
When the current installation is activated, reinstall that same edition. This is the safest route because Microsoft’s reinstallation guidance specifically ties no-key activation to a digital license for the matching edition on that device.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGet Windows 10 installation media
USB flash drive
Microsoft documents creating bootable installation media on a USB flash drive. Use a blank drive with enough capacity for the media and copy anything important off it first; creating the media can erase the drive. The drive supplies setup files only. It does not contain a Windows license, and buying the drive alone does not activate Windows.
DVD
A bootable DVD is another documented option for computers that can read optical discs. It is useful for older hardware, but the computer must support booting from its optical drive and the disc must be created as bootable installation media rather than copied as an ordinary file.
ISO workflow
Microsoft’s Windows 10 ISO page remains available. An ISO can be used to create USB media or, from an existing operating system, mounted to start setup. If the computer cannot boot its internal drive, create bootable media and select that device in the firmware boot menu instead.
Install Windows 10 step by step
- Prepare the license. Have the matching digital license available on the device, or locate the valid 25-character key for the edition you intend to install.
- Create or obtain the media. Use Microsoft’s installation-media process with a USB flash drive, DVD or ISO. Keep the computer connected to reliable power during creation and installation.
- Boot from the media. Insert the USB drive or DVD, restart the PC and choose that device from the firmware boot menu. The exact key used to open the menu varies by manufacturer.
- Start Windows Setup. Choose language, time and keyboard settings, then continue to the installation screen.
- Select the edition. Choose the edition that matches the existing digital license or product key. Do not choose Pro merely because it has more features if the license is for Home.
- Handle the product-key prompt. Choose I don’t have a product key only when the device already has a matching digital license or you plan to enter the key later. Otherwise enter the valid key for the edition being installed.
- Choose the installation type. An upgrade can preserve supported files and applications when launched from a running Windows installation. A custom installation is used for a clean install and can remove existing partitions, so verify backups and partition selection carefully.
- Let setup complete. The computer may restart several times. Do not remove the media until setup has copied the required files or the installer tells you to do so.
- Finish first-run setup. Create or sign in to the requested account, connect to the internet and reach the Windows desktop.
Activate after installation
Digital-license reactivation
For a previously activated computer, connect to the internet after setup. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license when applicable. If the installed edition matches the recorded license, Windows should activate online without a new key.
Check the result at Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Do not judge activation solely by whether the desktop loads; confirm the activation status on that page.
Product-key activation
For a key-based license, open the same Activation page and choose the option to change or enter a product key. Enter all 25 characters carefully. The key must correspond to the installed edition and must be legitimate and unused beyond its licensing terms.

When activation does not happen immediately
A newly installed system may need an internet connection or a short delay before activation servers process the license. Restarting after connectivity is restored and checking the Activation page again can distinguish a temporary connection issue from a licensing problem. If the key is rejected, verify the edition and every character rather than repeatedly entering the same incorrect value.

A motherboard change can make a digital license appear invalid because the hardware identity used for activation has changed. Before a planned replacement, link the digital license to a Microsoft account from the Activation settings page. This gives Microsoft a way to associate the license with the account when the hardware is rebuilt, although it does not guarantee that every license type transfers.
After the replacement:
- Install the same Windows 10 edition that was licensed on the old board.
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the linked Microsoft account.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter.
- When prompted, choose the option indicating that hardware on this device changed, then select the matching device from the account list if it appears.
- If the license is key-based, enter the original product key instead.
If the troubleshooter cannot restore activation, the license may be tied to the replaced hardware, the edition may not match, or the account may not contain the expected digital license. In those cases, Microsoft’s activation support and the original purchase documentation are the appropriate next checks.
Common installation and activation problems
“I don’t have a product key” was selected on a new PC
That choice skips the prompt; it does not create a license. Installation can finish, but activation still requires a digital license or valid key. Obtain the license and enter it from the Activation settings page.
Windows installed the wrong edition
A key or digital license for Home will not activate Pro, and a Pro license will not activate Home. Reinstall the matching edition or obtain a license for the edition currently installed. If the wrong edition was selected during setup, reinstalling is usually cleaner than attempting unsupported edition changes.
The computer has an OEM key in firmware
Setup may detect a firmware-embedded OEM key automatically. If it does not, check that the installed edition corresponds to the key. Firmware detection is not evidence that every Windows edition is licensed; it is a mechanism for retrieving the key intended for that device.
Recommended Free Tools
The PC activates but shows no current security support
Activation verifies licensing, not lifecycle status. A successfully activated Windows 10 Home or Pro installation can still be outside ordinary support after October 14, 2025. Activation does not restore security fixes or feature updates.
Setup cannot boot the USB or DVD
Recreate the media using Microsoft’s method, confirm that the computer is booting from the intended device in its firmware menu and check whether the hardware supports the selected media type. If the USB is not detected, try another port or another newly created drive; preserve the original files before recreating it.
Security choices once Windows 10 is installed
Continue without additional coverage
This is technically possible, but ordinary Home and Pro installations no longer receive Microsoft security fixes after October 14, 2025. The longer the unsupported system remains online, the more important it is to reduce exposure, keep applications updated where they still support Windows 10, maintain offline backups and avoid treating antivirus software as a substitute for operating-system patches.
Enroll an eligible device in consumer ESU
Microsoft’s consumer ESU option is the defined route for eligible Windows 10 devices to receive protection through October 12, 2027. ESU does not turn Windows 10 into a fully supported product, so check Microsoft’s enrollment terms and the device’s eligibility before relying on it.

Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the computer meets its requirements, or replacing hardware that cannot. A replacement PC may be the practical choice when the existing device cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, lacks a supported driver path or would cost more to secure and maintain than it is worth.
Microsoft 365 Apps may continue to run on Windows 10, but that does not change Windows 10’s end-of-support date. Application availability and operating-system security support are separate decisions.
Installation media, license and support: keep these separate
| Item | What it provides | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| USB flash drive or DVD | Bootable Windows 10 setup files | A license or activation |
| Windows 10 ISO | An image from which media can be created or setup can be started | Proof that the computer is licensed |
| Digital license | Online activation for the matching edition and eligible hardware | Automatic transfer to every replacement component or computer |
| 25-character product key | A way to activate the edition for which the key is valid | Post-support security updates for ordinary Home or Pro |
| Consumer ESU enrollment | Security coverage for eligible devices through October 12, 2027 | Normal feature updates or general support for Windows 10 |
Bottom line for 2026
You can still install Windows 10 and activate it in 2026. Reinstall the same edition on a previously activated computer and use its digital license, or provide a valid key for a device that has never been activated. Microsoft installation media remains separate from licensing, and activation does not undo Windows 10 Home and Pro’s October 14, 2025 end of ordinary support. For continued protection, evaluate consumer ESU through October 12, 2027 or move to a supported Windows release.
