Microsoft retired the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application on applicable Windows 10 channels, and the browser was a Windows component rather than a separate installer intended for current consumer use. Installing an executable from an unofficial archive is not an equivalent or supported solution.
If a business or government website still requires Internet Explorer compatibility, use Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge. Edge uses its Chromium engine for normal pages and the IE11 Trident/MSHTML engine only for sites that an administrator has configured for IE mode.

What “download IE11 for Windows 10” means in 2026
Internet Explorer 11 is no longer offered as a current, general-purpose Windows 10 download. Microsoft distributed IE11 as part of Windows, and its desktop support ended on the Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channel on June 15, 2022. On certain Windows 10 versions, Microsoft then permanently disabled the desktop application through an Edge update on February 14, 2023.
That change is why an old search result promising an “IE11 installer for Windows 10” can be misleading. A download may be an obsolete package, an installer for a different operating-system build, or an unofficial repackaged file. It cannot bring back a supported desktop browser on an edition where Microsoft has retired or disabled IE11.

There are edition exceptions. Microsoft’s retirement announcement excludes Windows 10 Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) and Windows Server IE11 desktop applications from that specific retirement. An LTSC or Server device can therefore behave differently from a mainstream Windows 10 22H2 installation. The exception does not create a universal download link; it means the device’s edition and servicing policy must be checked with its administrator.
Microsoft’s IE11 retirement timeline
| Date | Microsoft action | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| June 15, 2022 | IE11 desktop support ended on Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channels. | Those mainstream Windows 10 channels no longer had a supported IE11 desktop lifecycle. |
| February 14, 2023 | Microsoft scheduled permanent disablement through an Edge update on certain Windows 10 versions. | IE11 may be removed or disabled even if an older shortcut or file remains. |
| October 14, 2025 | Windows 10 version 22H2 and listed LTSB editions reached their stated end of support. | Windows support status is a separate issue from browser compatibility; end of support does not restore IE11. |
| October 13, 2026 | Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle page lists this date for consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU). | ESU coverage is time-limited and enrollment terms can vary by region and eligibility. |
| At least 2029 | Microsoft says Edge IE mode will be supported through at least 2029 and promises one year’s notice before retiring it. | IE mode is the supported bridge for configured legacy sites, not a re-release of the IE11 desktop app. |
The dates above come from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 11 lifecycle, retirement, FAQ, and Windows lifecycle pages. The retirement announcement’s LTSC and Windows Server exclusion is important: do not assume that every Windows 10 build has identical behavior.
Choose the right route for your situation
| Your situation | Use this route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You browse ordinary public websites | Use Microsoft Edge or another currently supported browser. | Modern browsers provide current security and web standards; IE11 is unnecessary. |
| A specific internal or partner site requires IE compatibility | Ask the site’s owner or your IT administrator to configure that URL for Edge IE mode. | Only the configured site opens with the IE11 engine; other tabs remain Chromium-based. |
| You manage a company Windows fleet | Deploy an Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy or the applicable intranet-site policy in Edge. | Central policy determines which sites use IE mode and lets you remove entries when systems are modernized. |
| You use Windows 10 LTSC or Windows Server | Check the exact edition, build, and organizational lifecycle policy with the administrator. | The 2023 retirement scope excluded these desktop applications, but support and configuration are edition-specific. |
| You found an “IE11 download” on an archive site | Do not treat it as a supported option. | It may be outdated, modified, incompatible, or unsafe, and it does not change Microsoft’s support status. |
How Edge IE mode works
Microsoft created IE mode for organizations that still need Internet Explorer 11 backward compatibility while moving to a modern browser. Edge runs normal pages with Chromium. A URL placed in the organization’s IE mode configuration is rendered with the Trident/MSHTML engine associated with IE11 instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
IE mode is therefore site-specific, not a button that turns the entire browser into Internet Explorer. A banking site, search engine, or unrelated page will continue to use the modern engine unless its address is explicitly included in policy. This separation limits legacy behavior to the applications that need it and avoids sending all browsing through an obsolete engine.
IE mode also does not extend the life of every old Microsoft web service. Microsoft has stated that using IE mode does not extend access to Microsoft services beyond those services’ own published end dates. If a service has been retired, IE mode cannot make it available again.
Set up a legacy website in Edge IE mode
The exact controls visible to an individual user depend on the Edge version, Windows edition, and whether the device is managed. Microsoft’s documented organization-wide method uses policy, so the steps below distinguish what a user can verify from what an administrator must change.
- Confirm that the site genuinely requires IE compatibility. Ask the site’s owner for its supported-browser requirement and the exact hostnames involved. A page that merely displays incorrectly in one browser may need a standards-compliant fix rather than IE mode.
- Identify the device’s Windows edition and management status. Check the Windows edition shown in the device’s system information or ask IT. Note whether the computer is Windows 10 22H2, an LTSC/LTSB edition, or Windows Server, because Microsoft’s retirement scope differs by edition. On a managed computer, local settings may be controlled centrally.
- Bring Edge and Windows to the organization’s approved update level. IE mode is an Edge feature, not an IE11 installer. Do not substitute an old Edge build or an archived browser package for the version approved by your administrator.
- Have the administrator add the site to the IE mode policy. Microsoft’s IE mode documentation identifies the Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy and the relevant intranet-site policy as the configuration routes. The entry must cover the correct URL or domain and be deployed through the organization’s normal device-management system.
- Allow policy synchronization to complete. After deployment, Edge may need to restart before the new site list is recognized. On a managed device, the administrator should confirm that the policy reached the computer rather than asking the user to bypass policy controls.
- Open the configured address in Edge. The configured page should be rendered with the IE11 engine while other pages continue to use Chromium. The exact indicator and wording can vary with Edge releases and organizational settings; rely on the administrator’s policy verification if no visual badge is shown.
- Test the complete workflow. Check sign-in, navigation between related hostnames, file uploads and downloads, printing, and any handoff to a desktop application. A site may load in IE mode yet still fail because a dependent service, authentication endpoint, or plug-in has also been retired.
- Record an owner and review date. Keep the site-list entry tied to the application owner. Remove or narrow it when the application is upgraded so users do not remain on legacy rendering unnecessarily.
On an unmanaged personal computer, you may not have permission to create the required policy. If the site belongs to an employer, school, agency, or supplier, the practical next step is to contact that organization’s help desk or application owner rather than downloading an IE11 executable.

What you need before requesting IE mode
Gathering the right details prevents an administrator from adding an incomplete or overly broad rule. Record the exact address that fails, including whether it uses a different hostname for sign-in, reports, downloads, or payment. Note the Windows edition and build, the Edge version approved by your organization, and whether the computer is enrolled in device management. Also identify the business owner who can confirm that the application still requires IE compatibility.
For a company fleet, decide whether the rule belongs in the Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy or the applicable intranet-site policy. A central list is preferable to ad hoc per-user workarounds because it can be tested, assigned to the right devices, and removed when the application is modernized. Keep the scope as narrow as the application allows; putting an entire public domain into IE mode can force unrelated pages through the legacy engine.
IE mode versus a standalone IE11 installer
| Consideration | Edge IE mode | Unofficial IE11 installer |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft support position | Supported compatibility capability, with support stated through at least 2029. | No supported general-purpose download path for ordinary Windows 10 use in 2026. |
| Rendering behavior | Uses Chromium for normal pages and Trident/MSHTML only for configured sites. | Attempts to install a retired desktop application, often without the required system integration. |
| Administration | Controlled through an Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy or applicable intranet policy. | Usually bypasses organizational controls and cannot reproduce a managed site list. |
| Cost | No separate IE product purchase is identified; it is functionality in Microsoft Edge, subject to organizational licensing and management. | A download may be advertised as free, but that does not make it authentic, safe, or supported. |
| Long-term plan | Provides a bridge while the legacy application is replaced. | Leaves the device dependent on an obsolete and potentially unsafe executable. |
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The site opens in ordinary Edge mode and behaves incorrectly. | The URL is not in the active IE mode site list, or policy has not synchronized. | Ask the administrator to verify the exact hostname, policy assignment, and Edge restart. Do not assume that adding a shortcut changes the rendering engine. |
| There is no user-facing IE mode control. | The organization has restricted the setting, the Edge build uses managed policy, or the Windows edition is outside the expected configuration. | Have IT check policy and edition support. A missing control is not evidence that an IE11 installer is required. |
| IE mode loads the page but a transaction still fails. | The application may depend on another retired service, a separate hostname, or an integration that IE mode cannot restore. | Give the application owner the full failing URL and workflow. They may need to add related domains or modernize the application. |
| An old IE shortcut produces an error after an Edge update. | IE11 desktop was permanently disabled on affected Windows 10 versions. | Move the shortcut or bookmark to the Edge URL and use the approved IE mode policy for that site. |
| An archived installer refuses to run. | The package targets another Windows build, lacks required servicing components, or is unofficial. | Stop using it. Verify the edition and use Edge IE mode or an administrator-supported legacy environment. |
| A Windows 10 computer still appears to have Internet Explorer files. | Retired components or shortcuts can remain on disk even when the desktop application is disabled. | Treat file presence as an implementation detail, not proof of support or a safe way to launch IE11. |
Security, compliance, and maintenance implications
Keeping an old executable on a workstation creates more than a compatibility problem. Its provenance may be unclear, its servicing history may not match the operating system, and an organization may be unable to verify what code was packaged. A legacy browser can also conflict with security baselines or software-inventory requirements. For those reasons, do not ask users to disable protections or replace a managed image simply to make an archived installer run.
IE mode limits legacy rendering to identified sites and leaves ordinary browsing in Chromium. That does not make an old application modern or remove its own security obligations. The application owner still needs to review authentication, data handling, uploads, downloads, and integrations. Treat each site-list entry as a temporary exception with an owner, test record, and review date.
What LTSC and Windows Server users should verify
Microsoft’s retirement announcement specifically says Windows 10 LTSC and Windows Server IE11 desktop applications were not affected by that announcement. That statement is narrower than “IE11 is supported everywhere on LTSC” and does not guarantee identical behavior across releases.
Before changing a managed machine, verify all of the following with the administrator:
- The exact Windows edition and build, including whether it is LTSC/LTSB or a Semi-Annual Channel release.
- The device’s servicing and security-support dates.
- Whether organizational policy permits the IE11 desktop application or requires Edge IE mode.
- Whether the legacy application owner has tested the current browser and authentication flow.
- Whether the computer is isolated or otherwise subject to additional security controls.
Do not replace a supported corporate image with a consumer Windows 10 image merely to obtain a familiar browser. Edition changes can remove the very compatibility and management controls the application depends on.

Windows 10 support and ESU do not revive Internet Explorer
Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of support for Windows 10 version 22H2 and the listed LTSB editions. Its current Windows lifecycle information also lists October 13, 2026 for consumer Extended Security Updates. ESU is a separate, time-bounded Windows servicing arrangement; it does not reinstate the IE11 desktop application or create a new IE11 download.
Organizations may have different licensing, servicing, or device-management arrangements. Confirm the applicable ESU terms and regional availability before relying on that date. Regardless of ESU status, legacy-site access should be planned around Edge IE mode or an application modernization project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why unofficial IE11 downloads are a poor workaround
An old browser installer cannot supply current security fixes, guarantee compatibility with your Windows build, or reproduce the policies that a managed legacy application needs. Repackaged executables also make it difficult to verify provenance and integrity. Installing one can introduce security and compliance problems while leaving the original site error unresolved.
If a download page claims to provide a “new” IE11 for Windows 10 in 2026, compare that claim with Microsoft’s lifecycle dates. The supported answer is to use Edge for modern browsing and configure IE mode only for identified legacy URLs.
A practical decision checklist
- Need normal web access? Use a current browser; do not seek IE11.
- Need one known legacy application? Collect its exact URLs and ask the administrator for an IE mode site-list entry.
- Manage many devices? Use the Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy or the applicable intranet-site policy, then test and review entries centrally.
- On LTSC or Windows Server? Verify edition-specific lifecycle and policy before assuming the desktop application is available.
- Considering an archive installer? Reject it as unsupported and potentially unsafe.
- Planning beyond 2026? Treat IE mode as a compatibility bridge supported through at least 2029, while budgeting for the legacy application’s replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 10 in 2026?
There is no supported standalone IE11 download for ordinary Windows 10 use. IE11 was a Windows component, desktop support ended on applicable Semi-Annual Channel editions on June 15, 2022, and Microsoft permanently disabled it on certain versions through an Edge update on February 14, 2023.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I use for a website that requires Internet Explorer?
Use Microsoft Edge IE mode. Ask the site’s owner or your administrator to place the exact URL or domain in the organization’s IE mode configuration. The page then uses the IE11 Trident/MSHTML engine while ordinary pages continue to use Chromium.
Can I turn on IE mode for every website?
IE mode is intended for specifically configured legacy sites, not as a universal browser switch. A site must be included through the Enterprise Mode Site List XML policy or the applicable intranet-site policy.
Rank #4
Why does IE mode still fail on an old Microsoft service?
IE mode supplies browser compatibility; it does not extend a service’s own published lifetime. If the service or a dependent authentication endpoint has been retired, IE mode cannot restore it.
Does Windows 10 ESU bring Internet Explorer back?
No. Extended Security Updates are a separate Windows servicing arrangement. They do not reinstate the IE11 desktop application or create a new installer.
Are LTSC and Windows Server different?
Microsoft’s retirement announcement excluded Windows 10 LTSC and Windows Server IE11 desktop applications from that specific retirement. Check the exact edition, build, lifecycle, and organizational policy with the administrator; the exception is not a universal download guarantee.
Is an archived IE11 installer safe to use?
Do not assume so. It may be modified, outdated, incompatible with your build, or unable to receive appropriate security fixes. It also bypasses the managed policies needed by many legacy applications.
How long will Edge IE mode be available?
Microsoft says IE mode will be supported through at least 2029 and that it will provide one year’s notice before retiring it. Organizations should still use that period to modernize dependent applications.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary Windows 10 users in 2026, there is no supported IE11 installer to download. Use a current browser for normal web access. When a known legacy site genuinely needs IE compatibility, have the administrator configure that site for Microsoft Edge IE mode, and verify the Windows edition before making assumptions about LTSC or Windows Server devices.
