Usually, yes—if your Microsoft account bought the digital game before it was delisted. Xbox says previously purchased Xbox 360 content remains playable and can be downloaded again after the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace stopped supporting new purchases on July 29, 2024. Delisting does not, however, give an unowned game a free entitlement, and playing it on another Xbox generation depends on that specific title’s compatibility.
What “delisted” means on Xbox
A delisted game is no longer offered for a new digital purchase in a particular Xbox storefront. That can happen because of expired music, sports, character or other licenses; a publisher decision; technical or regulatory changes; or the retirement of an entire storefront. Delisting and ownership are separate issues. Removing a listing normally affects people trying to buy the game, while an account that already purchased it may retain a license to download and play it.

The strongest official policy evidence concerns the Xbox 360 Store closure rather than every delisting on every Xbox platform. In its announcement, Xbox said that after the closure players would “still be able to play and re-download previously purchased content and connect with friends.” Xbox’s current Xbox 360 catalog wording likewise says the Marketplace has been retired, that new Xbox 360 purchases are no longer available there, and that owners can still play the catalog they own.
That is an ownership rule, not a promise that every delisted title will work forever. A game can remain in your purchase history while its servers, online modes, required licenses or compatibility support change.

Your answer depends on five checks
Before troubleshooting, establish these facts. Together they determine whether a delisted game can be played and which route is available.
- Digital ownership: Was the game purchased by the Microsoft account now signed in?
- Storefront: Is the game merely delisted, or was the entire storefront retired?
- Target console: Does the Xbox you want to use support that exact title?
- Physical edition: Is there a compatible disc release, and does your console accept it?
- Online service: Are the game’s servers and account services still operating?
A “yes” to ownership is the key to re-download rights. The other checks determine where and how you can use those rights.

Xbox 360 content after the 2024 Store closure
For Xbox 360 content covered by Microsoft’s closure guidance, a prior purchase remains available to the owning account. You can continue playing it and download it again, even though the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace no longer accept new purchases. The closure date for new Xbox 360 purchases was July 29, 2024.
To try a re-download:
- Sign in on the console or website with the Microsoft account that made the original purchase.
- Open your owned-game library or the console’s download history. Dashboard labels can change between console software versions.
- Find the title in the list of owned content and choose the install or download option.
- Allow the license check and installation to complete while the console is connected to Xbox services.
- Start the game while signed in to the owning account, then test any downloadable content separately if it was purchased as a separate item.
If the title appears in another account’s history, the console is not being shown an entitlement for your current sign-in. A family member’s purchase, a disc-based copy and a purchase on a different Microsoft account are not interchangeable simply because they use the same console.
What the closure did not change
The Xbox 360 Store closure removed new purchasing through that storefront. It did not revoke the general ability to play or re-download content already bought there. It also did not establish that every Xbox game sold elsewhere follows identical rules. A newer-generation listing, a publisher-specific license and an individual online service can have separate terms.
If you never bought the game
Re-download access is not a way to claim an unowned game. If you did not purchase the title before delisting, your old purchase history will not contain an entitlement to restore. The retired Xbox 360 Marketplace cannot be used to create a new purchase.

Check two possible alternatives:
- Another current Xbox storefront: Some games disappear from one generation’s store but remain sold in a newer digital catalog. Availability must be checked for the exact title and edition.
- A physical release: A disc may provide another route for games that were distributed physically, but not every delisted title has a disc edition, and disc compatibility varies by console and region.
Do not assume that finding an old product page means a purchase can be completed. A listing can remain visible for reference while checkout, download rights or licensing have been removed.

Playing a delisted Xbox 360 game on Xbox One
Xbox One backward compatibility is title-specific. Microsoft’s Xbox One support information says that a game included on its compatibility list can download and play on the console. It does not establish universal compatibility for every Xbox 360 game, delisted or otherwise.
Check the exact game in the current backward-compatibility or Xbox catalog information before relying on an Xbox One purchase or download. If the game is supported and your account owns it, the console can normally offer a digital installation through your owned library. If it is not supported, retaining the Xbox 360 entitlement does not make the Xbox One run the software.
The cited Xbox One support evidence does not by itself verify behavior for every Xbox Series X|S configuration. For a Series console, use the current compatibility listing for that title and confirm whether the supported version is the original Xbox 360 release, a remaster or another edition.
Using a disc instead of a digital license
A compatible physical disc can be an alternative when a digital listing is gone, but it is not a universal workaround.
- The disc must correspond to a version supported by your console.
- Some newer consoles require a disc drive; a digital-only console cannot read the physical license.
- Backward compatibility is still title-specific. A disc does not make an unsupported Xbox 360 game playable on Xbox One.
- Region, edition and downloadable-content differences can matter. A standard release may not include the same content as a special edition or digital bundle.
- A disc can authenticate the base game without restoring delisted downloadable content or discontinued online services.
Verify the exact edition and console support before buying a second-hand copy. Purchasing hardware or a disc cannot restore access to a game that your account never owned if no compatible physical release exists.
Online multiplayer after delisting
Xbox’s Xbox 360 Store announcement said players could continue connecting with friends. That statement describes the Store closure; it is not a guarantee that every game server will remain online indefinitely.
Online play can stop for reasons unrelated to the storefront: a publisher may shut down dedicated servers, remove matchmaking, retire authentication services or discontinue an account system. A game may therefore remain downloadable and launch successfully while some or all online features no longer work. Check the individual game’s current service status and publisher support information when multiplayer is the deciding factor.
Offline modes are also title-dependent. Some games permit campaign or local play after installation; others require a server sign-in even for part of the experience. The Xbox 360 Store policy alone does not define those game-level requirements.

1. Confirm the account
Sign out and back in with the account that completed the purchase. Check purchase history and owned games rather than relying on a shortcut, a pinned tile or a previous installation. If the purchase was made by another account, that account must supply the entitlement under the platform’s sharing rules.
2. Separate ownership from compatibility
If the game appears as owned but cannot be installed on the target console, check whether that exact title is on the console’s backward-compatibility list. An Xbox 360 purchase can remain valid while the software is unavailable on Xbox One because the title was never added to the supported catalog.
3. Check the storefront and edition
Make sure you are looking for the same release that was purchased: original game, bundle, add-on or region-specific edition. The Xbox 360 Marketplace’s retirement means its old purchase flow is not a fallback for a missing item. A newer storefront may list a different edition with separate ownership.
4. Recheck the console’s download history
Use the library or download-history view associated with the owning account. Menu names change, and a delisted item may not appear in general store search even when it remains in owned content. If the account history does not show the transaction, gather the original receipt or transaction details before contacting Xbox Support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Test installation and launch separately
An installation failure and an online-service failure are different problems. First establish whether the game downloads and launches. Then test downloadable content, sign-in and multiplayer. This isolates a missing entitlement from a compatibility or server issue.
6. Check service status and publisher support
If the game was previously playable but now fails during sign-in or matchmaking, consult Xbox service status and the game publisher’s support notices. The Store closure policy covers previously purchased content; it does not keep every game’s servers, licenses or authentication endpoints operating.

| Situation | Likely route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased Xbox 360 digital game before July 29, 2024 | Play and re-download through the owning account | Applies to previously purchased content covered by Xbox’s closure guidance |
| Never purchased the delisted game | Check a current Xbox storefront or a compatible physical release | The retired Xbox 360 Marketplace cannot create a new purchase |
| Owned Xbox 360 game on Xbox One | Install if the exact title is backward-compatible | Compatibility is title-specific, not universal |
| Owned game on an Xbox Series console | Use the current compatibility listing for the exact title | The cited Xbox One support statement does not verify every Series X|S case |
| Compatible disc edition | Insert the disc and install where the console supports it | Disc, edition, region and console-drive requirements still apply |
| Game downloads but multiplayer fails | Play supported offline or local modes if available | Publisher servers and online services may have ended |
Important limits on the “you own it” rule
Ownership is necessary but not sufficient in every case. The official Xbox statements specifically address Xbox 360 Store closure and previously purchased content. They should not be broadened into a guarantee for every Xbox generation, every title license or every future platform change.
Licensing can affect a game after purchase. A publisher may remove an online component, a soundtrack or downloadable item; an operating-system update may alter compatibility; or an account issue may prevent the entitlement from appearing. None of those possibilities changes the central distinction: delisting blocks or limits new sales, while a valid prior purchase generally remains in the owner’s library under the applicable platform rules.
Keep access to the purchasing Microsoft account and retain transaction records. If you replace hardware, those details are often more useful than an old store bookmark, because the storefront search may no longer expose a delisted product.

Bottom line for common questions
Can I redownload a game I bought on Xbox?
For Xbox 360 content covered by Microsoft’s closure guidance, yes. Sign in to the purchasing account and use its owned-game library or download history.
Can I play a delisted Xbox 360 game on Xbox One?
Only if that exact game is on Xbox One’s backward-compatibility list. Your prior purchase does not make every Xbox 360 title compatible.
Can I buy a delisted game after the Xbox 360 Store closed?
Not through the retired Xbox 360 Marketplace. Check whether the game is sold on a current storefront or exists as a compatible physical release.
Will multiplayer still work?
It may, but the Store closure announcement’s promise to connect with friends is not a lifetime guarantee for each game’s servers. Online availability is controlled at the game-service level.
Does owning the game guarantee access to its downloadable content?
Not automatically. Downloadable content can have separate entitlements, licensing and server dependencies. Check each add-on in the owning account’s history.
