In the UK, you can’t use a Post Office counter while that branch is closed. You may still collect a parcel elsewhere if it was routed to a designated collection point and is ready, and Post Office directs customers to Payzone for bill payments when their local branch is shut. Check the specific location’s services and hours before travelling.
Can you collect a parcel while the Post Office is closed?
Not from the closed branch counter. You can collect it from another location only if the carrier or retailer routed or redirected that parcel there and its tracking or collection notice confirms it is ready. A nearby Post Office or parcel shop is not automatically able to handle every carrier’s parcels.
Check the parcel’s location and opening hours
Start with the tracking page or collection notice to confirm the chosen location and readiness. Royal Mail’s location finder covers Post Office branches, Royal Mail Shops and other locations, but the services available vary by location. Use the relevant listing to check details before setting out: Royal Mail location finder and Royal Mail Shops.
Royal Mail and Post Office Limited are separate organisations. A Royal Mail Shop is not a Post Office branch, so do not assume it offers Post Office counter services such as bill payment.

Bring the collection details the carrier requires
Follow the instructions for your specific item. Depending on the carrier and service, you may need a collection QR code or PIN; Royal Mail’s missed-delivery guidance asks for tracking information and proof of identity. If you are collecting for someone else, check the item-specific rules in advance: Post Office missed-delivery guidance.
The Post Office guidance says Royal Mail and Parcelforce items covered by its missed-delivery process are held for 18 days before being returned. That period applies to those named carrier items, not necessarily to parcels from other carriers or collection services.

Where can you pay bills if your Post Office is shut?
Post Office says: “If it’s closed, you can access bill payment services through Payzone.” Use the Payzone store locator to find a retailer and check its opening hours and the services it offers. Confirm that the outlet handles your particular bill before travelling; a nearby Payzone retailer may not provide every payment service.
Check the bill, fee and payment method
Post Office lists energy, council tax, water, housing, rent and other bills among the payments its services cover. Its guidance says most payments at Post Office branches and Payzone stores have no fee, but certain Santander bill payments carry a £2.60 fee. The same guidance lists cash, qualifying cheques and cards among possible payment methods, subject to restrictions. Are benefit and pension payments handled the same way?
No. The Government’s Payment Exception Service is for people who qualify because they cannot open a bank account; it is not a general route for paying bills. Eligible people can collect an issued payment at any PayPoint outlet or Post Office during opening hours. GOV.UK says the payment must be collected within 90 days: Payment Exception Service guidance.
