As of October 7, 2026, you can’t buy a new game through the PlayStation Store on a PSP. That is different from redownloading a game you already bought: Sony says previously purchased content can still be downloaded from the PSP’s Download List. Whether a PSP game can still be newly purchased through a PS3 or PS Vita store depends on whether it is listed in your region, and those stores have announced closures.
Can you still buy PSP games on the PlayStation Store?
No—not from the PSP’s own storefront. Sony says the PSP Store had already closed in 2016, and that the remaining ability to search for content or make in-game purchases ended on July 6, 2021. Sony announced the planned retirement of PSP commerce earlier, writing on April 19, 2021, “PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.” The July 2 announcement date and July 6 end date for the remaining features refer to different points in the shutdown timeline.

Sony’s 2021 support notice said that PSP content still available in the PS3 or PS Vita stores could be purchased and played there. That was never a guarantee that every PSP game was listed, and it does not establish that a particular title is still available to buy now. Store offerings vary by country or region. Can you redownload PSP games you already bought?
Sony says previously purchased PSP content can be downloaded from the PSP’s Download List. This is a way to retrieve content associated with an existing purchase, not a way to buy a new license. Sony’s notice does not promise that every old transfer method or every individual download will work in every circumstance today.

- On the PSP, open the Download List and look for the title you previously purchased.
- Confirm that the title is available to your account before troubleshooting transfers or storage.
- Choose a supported storage destination. Sony’s PSP manual describes saving downloads to Memory Stick media; the PSP-N1000 series can also select system storage.
Sony’s PSP game-download guide contains legacy instructions for downloading and copying games. Treat those directions as documentation, not proof that every historical PS3-to-PSP workflow remains functional. The manual’s download and storage instructions describe the Memory Stick option and the PSP-N1000 system-storage option. Check your model before buying storage media; a Memory Stick or cable does not restore the ability to make new PSP Store purchases.
What changed for PS3 and PS Vita stores?
The PS3 and PS Vita stores are separate from the PSP storefront, but they matter because Sony previously identified them as places where some PSP content could still be purchased. On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that PS3 Store closures would begin in selected markets during 2026, with PS3 and PS Vita store closures in all other countries scheduled for July 2027. Sony also said previously purchased PS3 and PS Vita content would remain downloadable for the foreseeable future after closure; it did not give a fixed time period.

Those dates concern PS3 and PS Vita stores, not a new PSP purchase option or a guarantee that every PSP game can be transferred to a PSP. Check Sony’s July 2026 store update for the announced schedule and applicable market details.

Which option makes sense: an existing download or a UMD?

For a game you do not already own digitally, a used UMD is the straightforward alternative if your PSP has a disc drive. Check the exact PSP model and the seller’s description of disc condition and region compatibility before purchasing. A PSP Go cannot play UMDs.

What to check before trying to play a PSP game
- Your entitlement: For a digital copy, determine whether the game appears in your account’s PSP Download List. A past listing in another store is not proof of a current purchase option.
- Your region: Sony says store offerings can vary by country or region, so availability elsewhere does not establish availability for your account.
- Your PSP model: Confirm whether it has a UMD drive and which storage destinations it supports. The PSP-N1000 can select system storage; Sony’s manual also documents Memory Stick storage on supported models.
- Your transfer expectations: Sony’s older manual includes PSP and PS3 download and copy instructions, but those steps should not be treated as a guarantee that every legacy transfer path still works.
