Yes. You can still buy several classic Ultima releases through official digital storefronts. GOG currently lists nine Ultima products, including individual games and bundles, while EA maintains a broad Ultima catalog that includes mainline and Ultima Online entries. Whether a particular release works on your computer depends on its exact edition, emulator packaging, operating-system label, and your region’s checkout availability.
Where can you buy Ultima games today?
The most useful distinction is between a storefront listing and a confirmed purchase path. GOG’s series catalog presents specific products that can be examined and, where offered in your market, purchased as digital downloads. EA maintains an official catalog with many Ultima entries, but a catalog page alone does not establish that every title is currently purchasable in every country. Open the individual product page and verify that checkout is available for your account and region.

GOG’s current Ultima catalog
GOG’s displayed series catalog contains nine products. Several are collections rather than single games, so the title of the product is not enough to determine exactly what you will receive. Read the contents section on the individual listing before buying.

That nine-product count is a count of the products shown in GOG’s own series catalog, not a claim that every Ultima release has been preserved there. The catalog groups some games and separates others: for example, Ultima I–III is one product, while Ultima IV is also available as its own listing even though IV appears in the IV+V+VI collection.

What EA’s catalog tells you
EA’s official Ultima catalog includes many mainline and spin-off games, including Ultima Online entries. Official EA search results also surface product pages for Ultima VII, Ultima VIII and Underworld titles. Treat those pages as starting points rather than a guarantee of a working checkout: availability can vary by country, account, platform and current store configuration. Confirm the individual page, the listed platform and the purchase controls before assuming a title is available to you.
What is not established by these listings
The catalog evidence does not establish that the classic series is sold through Steam or every other PC storefront. It also does not prove that all Ultima games are available from either GOG or EA. A search result, a catalog entry and a purchasable product are three different things. For a specific game, use the current product page as the final authority.
Which editions and bundles should you choose?
Your first decision is the game or group of games you actually want, not the storefront logo. Collections can be convenient, but they may duplicate a title you would otherwise buy separately. Use the product description to answer four questions:
- Is the game included as a standalone release or only inside a bundle?
- Does the package include the exact expansion, edition or companion title you expect?
- Which operating systems are listed for this edition?
- Does the page describe an offline installer, a launcher requirement or emulator packaging?
If you want the early trilogy
The GOG product named Ultima I+II+III combines the first three numbered games. Its product page describes DOSBox packaging, support for Windows and Mac OS X, and a 20 March 2025 update that records compatibility verification for Windows 10 and Windows 11. GOG’s store FAQ for the product says GOG Galaxy is not required and describes an offline installer.
If you want the middle trilogy
Ultima IV+V+VI is listed as a collection. The listing establishes that the three games are grouped together, but the material available here does not provide a matching dated Windows compatibility statement for that product. Check the current page’s requirements and support notes rather than assuming that the compatibility wording for another Ultima package applies to it.
If you want Ultima VII
Ultima VII: The Complete Edition is one of the clearest documented choices for a modern Windows installation. GOG says the edition is powered by DOSBox, works on Windows and Mac OS X, and offers a fully offline installer; Galaxy is optional. A GOG changelog dated 13 November 2024 states: “Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.” That is a statement about this GOG edition’s packaging and verification, not a universal test result for every copy of Ultima VII.

If you want Underworld
The Ultima Underworld 1+2 package is labeled DOSBox-powered and officially supported on Windows and macOS. GOG also records Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility verification for the package. Because the page uses macOS language while other older listings use “Mac OS X,” read the current operating-system wording on the exact product you plan to install; an older Mac label should not be interpreted as a promise for every current macOS release.
If you want a spin-off or a later numbered game
GOG lists Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire, Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams, Ultima VIII Gold Edition and Ultima IX: Ascension. The catalog confirms that these products are listed, but the compatibility statements documented above apply specifically to the cited GOG pages for Ultima I+II+III, Ultima VII and Underworld 1+2. Do not transfer those statements to the other releases without checking their own pages.
Will Ultima run on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
For some GOG editions, the answer is documented as yes. GOG’s Ultima VII changelog dated 13 November 2024 says it verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11. The Ultima I+II+III page records the same type of verification in an update dated 20 March 2025. The Underworld 1+2 page also labels the package as compatible with Windows 10 and 11.
Those are edition-specific storefront statements. They are not evidence that every Ultima game, every original disc release or every fan-made engine will run unchanged on every modern PC. Before purchasing, open the exact listing and check its supported systems, update history and installation notes. A different edition may use different files, launchers or configuration defaults.
What DOSBox packaging means
DOSBox is an emulator used to run many DOS-era games on modern operating systems. When a GOG page says that an Ultima package is powered by DOSBox, the storefront is describing how that edition is prepared to launch the legacy software. You generally do not need to source a separate DOS operating system for the packaged release. The statement does not, by itself, promise a particular resolution, controller layout, save location or behavior on every current device.

Several pages identify Windows and Mac OS X, while the Underworld page uses Windows and macOS. These labels belong to the individual storefront products. They do not establish a single, series-wide Mac compatibility policy, and an old “Mac OS X” label should not be read as certification for every new macOS version or Apple hardware generation. Check the current listing and support notes for the edition you intend to use.

How to buy the right release
- Start with the exact game name. Decide whether you want a numbered entry, an Underworld title or a Worlds of Ultima spin-off.
- Open the product page, not only the series page. Confirm the included games, edition name and any expansion or bonus content.
- Check your region. Make sure the page offers a purchase option for your country and account. Catalog visibility alone is not enough, particularly on EA’s site.
- Read the operating-system and support section. Look for the current Windows or macOS labels, emulator information and dated compatibility notes.
- Choose your installation method. If an offline installer is offered and you prefer not to depend on a launcher, verify that option on the exact GOG product page.
- Save the installer and order details. Keep the downloaded installer, receipt and any product documentation in a location you control.
- Install one title first. For a collection, launch the game you care about before installing every included entry. This isolates problems and confirms that the chosen edition behaves as expected on your computer.
Do you need GOG Galaxy?
For the GOG products specifically documented here, no. The pages for Ultima VII and Ultima I+II+III say that GOG Galaxy is optional and describe offline installers. That lets you install those editions without making Galaxy the required launch path. Verify the same wording on any other product before relying on an offline installation, because storefront policies and individual packages can change.
An offline installer is useful if you want a durable local copy, need to install on a machine with limited connectivity, or prefer not to run a storefront client. It does not remove the need to check the product’s license terms, updates and system requirements.
Compatibility checks before you spend money
Use this checklist for every candidate release:
- Edition: Match the exact title and edition to the game you intend to play.
- Included content: Confirm whether the listing is a single game or a collection.
- Operating system: Read the current Windows or Mac label on that product page.
- Verification date: Give more weight to a dated compatibility note than to a generic series description, while remembering that it remains the store’s statement for that edition.
- Installation route: Determine whether an offline installer is available and whether a launcher is optional.
- Region: Test the actual product page and checkout in your market.
- Device type: If you are using a handheld, virtual machine or nonstandard operating system, do not assume that a Windows or Mac label covers it.
Common problems and sensible recovery steps
Legacy-game failures are often caused by choosing the wrong package or reading a series-level listing as if it were a compatibility guarantee. Work from the exact product page and keep the troubleshooting narrow.

Return to the individual listing and check your signed-in region. EA’s catalog is broad, but the presence of a title there does not prove that checkout is enabled in every country. If the product page does not provide a current purchase path, do not infer availability from a search snippet or from another market’s listing.
The installer does not match the game you expected
Recheck the product name and contents. GOG groups I–III, IV–VI and Underworld 1+2, while also listing some games separately. A bundle may be correct but different from the standalone edition you had in mind.
The game launches, but the display or controls are wrong
First confirm that you installed the intended storefront edition and that its DOSBox package is being used. Then consult the product’s current support notes for configuration guidance. Avoid copying settings from a different Ultima release: separate games and bundles can ship with different defaults.

You want to reinstall without a launcher
Use the offline installer when the exact GOG page says it is available. Keep a fresh copy of the installer and the purchase information, and check the page for later updates before reinstalling. Galaxy is optional for the documented Ultima VII and Ultima I+II+III products, but do not generalize that policy to an unverified edition.

You are trying to run an original disc or a community engine
The compatibility statements above concern the named storefront packages. Original media, unofficial ports and community engines can have different requirements. Follow the current documentation for that project and do not treat GOG’s Windows verification as a compatibility test for a separate build.

This is not a ranking. It is a way to match the storefront to your priority. If you want a clearly documented DOSBox package and an optional launcher, the cited GOG pages provide that information. If you are looking for a particular entry visible in EA’s catalog, use EA’s individual product page to establish whether it can actually be bought where you live.
What about playing on newer computers and handhelds?
The documented compatibility statements cover Windows 10 and 11 for selected GOG products. They do not automatically cover handheld PCs, Linux, ChromeOS, virtual machines, emulation layers or every current Apple device. A handheld running Windows may still require its own control and display adjustments; a non-Windows operating system may require a different engine or compatibility layer. Check the exact edition’s current support information before buying for a nonstandard setup.
If portability is your priority, start with a product that explicitly lists your operating system rather than assuming that a DOSBox label alone provides support. If the page lists only Windows and Mac OS X, treat that as the documented scope.

A storefront compatibility note answers a narrower question than “Will every copy run everywhere?” It tells you what the publisher or distributor says about that specific package, at a stated point in time. The Ultima VII page’s 13 November 2024 changelog and the Ultima I+II+III page’s 20 March 2025 update are useful because they attach Windows 10/11 verification to named products and dates.

Use that information together with the edition name, operating-system label and installation method. Do not convert it into a promise about a different release, a later operating-system version or a community-maintained port.

Can I still buy the original Ultima games digitally?
Yes. GOG lists multiple Ultima games and collections, and EA maintains an official catalog. Availability is product- and region-specific, so confirm the individual listing and checkout before purchase.
Is Ultima VII the safest modern-Windows choice?
