Yes. New standalone DVD players are still listed by manufacturers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Panasonic lists the DVD-S700 in the US, Sony Canada lists the DVP-SR510H, and LG UK lists the DP542H. Availability varies by country and retailer, so verify local stock, the exact regional model, supported discs and the connections on your television before ordering.
Why a new DVD player can still make sense
Streaming is convenient, but a disc player remains useful if you own a DVD collection, buy second-hand discs, need playback without an internet connection, or want a simple device for a spare television. A standalone player can also be a practical replacement when an older unit stops working and your discs are still in good condition.

The important distinction is between availability and universal compatibility. Manufacturer product pages show that new players continue to exist, but a model listed in one market may be unavailable elsewhere. The same model family can also have different outputs or supported standards in different countries. Treat each listing as a specific regional product rather than assuming every DVD player has the same capabilities.

The clearest answer comes from the products themselves: new models remain listed, but you must match one to your equipment and your discs.

Current manufacturer-listed examples
These are examples of products listed by manufacturers, not a controlled test or a ranking. The prices were shown when the pages were accessed and can change.
| Model | Market shown | Features listed by manufacturer | Price shown at access | What the listing does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic DVD-S700 | United States | 1080p up-conversion, Dolby Digital, USB playback, DVD and CD support, power resume | $49.99 (US dollars) | Current local stock, long-term reliability or comparative picture quality |
| Sony DVP-SR510H | Canada | 1080p upscaling and HDMI output | $79.99 (Canadian dollars) | A direct price comparison with the US example, or availability outside Canada |
| LG DP542H | United Kingdom | 1080p upscaling; HDMI, component, composite, optical-audio and analogue-stereo outputs; progressive scan, parental lock and closed captioning | Not stated | Performance or stock in other countries |
The different currencies, markets and possible sale conditions mean the Panasonic and Sony prices should not be read as a like-for-like value comparison. Check the retailer’s exact listing for tax, delivery, warranty and included accessories.
Start with your television and audio connections
Connection compatibility is the first buying check. Look at the inputs on the television and, if applicable, the outputs and inputs on your AV receiver or soundbar. Then compare them with the player’s outputs.
HDMI for most current televisions
Both the Panasonic DVD-S700 and Sony DVP-SR510H examples list HDMI. HDMI carries the video signal and, depending on the equipment, digital audio through one cable. It is generally the simplest choice for a modern television, but confirm that the exact player includes HDMI rather than relying on a model name or an old review.
Analogue and legacy connections
The LG DP542H listing includes component video, composite video and analogue stereo in addition to HDMI and optical audio. Those outputs can help with older televisions, amplifiers or equipment that lacks HDMI. However, do not assume an older analogue input exists on a modern TV. Check the sockets physically or consult the TV manual.

- 1080p HDMI Upscaling - Upscales standard-definition DVD content to Full HD using advanced picture enhancement and progressive scan technology, delivering a clearer and more immersive viewing experience—perfect for your home theater setup.
- Multi-Region DVD Playback - Plays DVDs from all regions (1–6) and supports both PAL and NTSC video standards for worldwide compatibility.
- Multi-Format Compatibility - Supports video discs including DVD, DVD+R/R DL, DVD+RW, DVD-R/R DL, DVD-RW, SVCD, VCD; audio discs including CD, CD-R, and CD-RW; plus MP3, WMA, and JPEG file formats. Note: Not compatible with Blu-ray discs.
- USB Port - Plays MP3/WMA audio and JPEG image files directly from USB flash drives. Supports drives up to 128GB (FAT32 format only; NTFS and exFAT are not supported).
- Easy Setup - Connects easily to your Smart TV, HDTV, or projector via HDMI for high-quality digital audio and video through a single cable. Also includes RCA AV output for older TVs and a coaxial digital audio output for connection to a multi-channel home audio system (coaxial cable not included).
Regional variations make this check especially important. An Australian Panasonic S500 specification result lists disc and USB formats but says that model has no HDMI output. A similarly named player in another market may therefore require a different cable or an adapter, or may not suit a TV with HDMI-only inputs.
Optical audio and receivers
If your receiver or sound system accepts optical digital audio, a player with an optical output can send audio separately from the television connection. The LG example lists optical audio as well as analogue stereo. Verify the receiver’s input type and the player’s output before purchase; an optical socket on one device does not help if the other device has nowhere to connect it.
What to check before ordering
- Write down every input on the TV: HDMI, component, composite or another type.
- Check whether your receiver or soundbar needs optical or analogue audio.
- Confirm that the exact regional player has the output you intend to use.
- Check whether the package includes a remote, batteries and an HDMI cable. Do not assume a cable is included.
What “1080p upscaling” actually means
Panasonic and Sony list 1080p up-conversion or upscaling. This is processing inside the player that outputs a higher-resolution signal to a compatible display. It does not turn a DVD into native high-definition or 4K content.
Panasonic’s product description says its DVD-S700 “creates smooth, high-resolution images 1080p” and describes up-conversion as correcting brightness signals in recorded content, DVD movies and other media. That is the manufacturer’s product copy, not an independent test. No comparative picture-quality test was established for these examples.
When both the player and television can scale an image, either device may perform the conversion. The practical approach is to connect through HDMI, select the player’s documented output setting, and compare it with the television’s own processing if the player allows that choice. Do not pay a premium on the assumption that the word “upscaling” guarantees a visibly sharper image; the result depends on the source disc, processing and display.

Note: Do not support blue-ray disc and MP4 files.
Check region codes and PAL/NTSC standards
A DVD bought in one country may not play on a player sold for another country. Check both the region marking on the disc and the regional specification for the exact player.
Sony’s guidance for its US players says those models support NTSC and Region 1, play Region 0 or All discs, and are not compatible with other region codes or PAL/SECAM. That guidance applies to the cited US guidance, not automatically to every Sony model or every brand worldwide.
How to verify a disc
- Look for the region symbol on the disc case or disc label.
- Check whether the video standard is NTSC, PAL or another format.
- Find the player’s regional specification for the country in which it is sold.
- Confirm that the two match before opening the package or disc.
Retail listings sometimes use broad phrases such as “multi-format” without explaining region support. Ask the seller for the exact model number and regional version when the description is unclear. A player that handles Region 0/All discs is not necessarily compatible with every PAL or SECAM disc, and a player that supports PAL output is not automatically region-free.
Match disc and USB formats to what you own
Do not choose a player solely by its price or the presence of HDMI. Make a short inventory of your media first:
- Commercial movie DVDs
- DVDs you recorded yourself
- Audio CDs
- Photo or video files on USB storage
- Discs created in a computer or camcorder
Panasonic lists DVD formats and CDs, plus USB playback, and the DVD-S700 listing includes power resume. LG’s DP542H page lists additional convenience features such as progressive scan, parental lock and closed captioning. The supported formats can differ by model and region, so read the complete specification for the exact unit rather than assuming that a USB socket accepts every video file.

USB playback is particularly easy to misunderstand. A socket may support only certain file systems, video codecs, audio formats or storage sizes. If you need USB playback, look for a published format list and compare it with the files you actually use. If the listing does not state a format, treat it as “not established” rather than assuming compatibility.

Power resume
Power resume can return playback to the point at which a disc was stopped, a useful feature for episodic programs or long films. Panasonic lists this function on the DVD-S700. Check whether it resumes after a normal stop, power loss or only certain types of interruption; product pages do not always define the exact behavior.
Progressive scan
LG lists progressive scan on the DP542H. This is relevant to how interlaced DVD video is presented to a compatible display. It does not change the source disc into HD video, and the benefit depends on the television and connection in use.
Parental controls and captions
Parental lock can restrict playback settings, while closed-caption support may matter for accessibility or language needs. These features are listed for the LG example. Verify the exact caption format and menu behavior if they are essential to your household.

A standalone player is only convenient if you can control it. Confirm that the remote and batteries are supplied. Also check whether an HDMI cable is included; many listings omit the cable even when the player has HDMI.

Buying checklist: a practical decision process
- List your discs. Note DVD region markings, PAL or NTSC labeling, CDs and any USB files you expect to use.
- Inspect your TV and audio gear. Record the available inputs and whether sound goes through the TV, a receiver or a soundbar.
- Filter by outputs. Prefer an exact HDMI match for an HDMI-equipped TV; select component, composite, optical or analogue outputs only when your setup requires them.
- Verify the regional model. Compare the seller’s model number, country version, region support and video standard with your discs.
- Read the format table. Confirm DVD, CD, recordable-disc and USB support instead of relying on a generic “DVD player” label.
- Check package contents. Confirm the remote, batteries, power lead and any required cable.
- Compare the complete cost. Include shipping, taxes, a cable if needed and the seller’s return policy.
- Save the specification page. Keep a copy of the exact listing and model number in case the retailer sends a different regional variant.
Setting up a new player
- Place the player where its ventilation openings are not blocked.
- Connect the player to the TV using the matching output and input. Use HDMI when both devices support it; otherwise use the compatible analogue connection documented for the model.
- Connect optical or analogue audio to the receiver or soundbar if your setup uses separate audio.
- Insert the batteries in the supplied remote and connect the power lead.
- Select the TV input corresponding to the socket you used.
- Open the player’s setup menu and select the documented video output and regional options. Do not choose a format your TV cannot display.
- Test with a disc whose region and video standard you have verified.
- If USB playback matters, test one known-supported file before transferring a large library.
Common problems and how to diagnose them
No picture
Confirm that the TV is on the correct input, the cable is fully seated and the player’s output matches the TV connection. If you used a regional model without HDMI, check whether your TV still has the required component or composite input. Avoid assuming the player is defective until the input and output types match.
Picture appears in the wrong color or format
Check PAL/NTSC compatibility and the player’s video-output setting. A disc from another region can fail because of both region coding and video-standard differences.
Disc will not play
Check the disc’s region marking, PAL/NTSC standard and physical condition. Then compare the disc type with the player’s published format list. A USB-capable player is not necessarily compatible with every recorded DVD or file format.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo sound
Verify whether audio is routed through HDMI, optical or analogue stereo. Select the corresponding input on the receiver or soundbar and check that the TV or receiver is not muted. If the player has separate audio and video connections, both must be connected to the intended equipment.
Remote does not operate
Install fresh batteries, remove any obstruction between the remote and player, and confirm that the remote belongs to the exact model. Check the retailer’s package list if the remote was missing from the box.
Is a new DVD player worth buying?
It is a reasonable purchase when you already own DVDs, need offline playback, or want a straightforward replacement for a failed unit. The decision is less attractive if your entire library is streamed and you have no discs to play, or if your television lacks a compatible input for the player you are considering.
The safest choice is not automatically the cheapest model. It is the player whose regional version supports your discs and connects directly to your TV and audio equipment. The Panasonic DVD-S700, Sony DVP-SR510H and LG DP542H demonstrate that new options remain listed in major markets, but their different specifications also show why model-level checking matters.
