Press and hold the right side of a Status to try it; release to return to normal speed. WhatsApp’s official instructions document trimming videos before posting, not speeding up videos while viewing them. Instagram’s comparable 2× gesture is reported for Reels, not Stories. No Stories playback-speed control is verified in the material cited here.
What happens when you try to speed up a WhatsApp Status?
On WhatsApp, a recent beta report describes a temporary 2× viewing gesture for Status updates. While watching a Status, press and hold the right side of the screen. Playback should accelerate while your finger remains down, then return to normal speed as soon as you release.

This behavior is not documented in the WhatsApp Help Center instructions surfaced for creating a Status. WhatsApp’s official guide explains how to select a video, trim it and share it, but it does not describe a viewer playback-speed button or gesture. The 2× behavior comes from a staged beta rollout reported by WABetaInfo, so it may be absent even when you are using the latest public app.
How to test the reported WhatsApp gesture
- Open WhatsApp and enter the Status viewer.
- Open the video Status you want to watch.
- Place your finger on the right side of the Status screen and keep it pressed.
- Keep holding while you want the temporary 2× playback.
- Lift your finger. Playback should return to normal speed.
The report does not describe a permanent speed preference, a menu setting or a way to change the speed to another value. It describes an on-demand acceleration that lasts only for the press.

Who is expected to see it?
WABetaInfo reported on October 8, 2026, that WhatsApp was bringing the feature to Android Status viewing in beta version 2.26.40.4. The report says it was rolling out to some testers, with more users expected over the following weeks. It also says the same capability had appeared in an iOS beta the previous month. That is rollout information, not a promise that every Android or iPhone account has the control.
If holding the right side does nothing, the most accurate conclusion is that the feature is not enabled for your account or build. The surfaced official instructions provide no separate switch for turning it on. Avoid confusing the absence of the gesture with a broken video: normal Status playback can still work without the beta control.
WhatsApp’s official Status controls are for creating videos, not changing viewing speed
WhatsApp’s Help Center separates two different actions that are easy to conflate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Before posting: you can choose a video and trim its beginning or end with the editing slider.
- While viewing someone else’s Status: the official instructions do not document a playback-speed control. The reported right-side press-and-hold gesture is a beta feature described separately.
Trimming changes which portion is uploaded; it does not make the remaining footage play faster. If you need a permanently sped-up clip for your own Status, speed it up in a video editor before uploading. That creates a new, faster file rather than changing the viewer’s playback behavior. The official guide itself does not promise an in-WhatsApp speed editor.

Video length, formats and quality
The surfaced iOS Status guide says a video can be up to 90 seconds long and supports 3GP and MPEG-4 formats. It also warns that Status media may be lower quality than the original. Those limits describe uploading and sharing; they do not indicate a 90-second playback-speed setting or guarantee that a posted video will retain its source quality.
WhatsApp Status updates are temporary. The Help Center says they disappear from view after 24 hours. Meta used the same 24-hour description in its February 7, 2023 announcement, writing: “Every status disappears in 24 hours and may include photos, videos, GIFs, text and more.” You can read that announcement on Meta’s Newsroom.
Does Instagram Stories have a 2× playback control?
No equivalent Stories control is verified in the cited material. Stories normally progress through a creator’s clips when you tap to advance, rather than offering a viewer-selected playback rate. A press-and-hold action in Stories should not be described as a confirmed 2× feature unless Instagram publishes current documentation that specifically applies it to Stories.
A July 13, 2026 Q&A from Kontentino discusses whether Instagram might add a press-and-hold speed-up action to Stories. It treats the idea as a possibility and explains that Stories move forward at a fixed pace when tapped. It is secondary commentary, not an Instagram Help Center confirmation or an official product commitment. The article is available at Kontentino.

What to do when a Story is too slow
- Tap the right side to move to the next Story segment.
- Tap the left side to return to the previous segment.
- Press and hold only if you want to pause while reading; do not assume that this pauses at 2× speed.
- If a creator posted several short clips, use the tap controls to move between them rather than seeking a hidden speed menu.
Those controls change which Story segment you are viewing. They are different from accelerating the current video’s frames.
Instagram Reels does have a reported 2× gesture
The Instagram feature often confused with a Stories control belongs to Reels. Social Media Today reported on March 27, 2025, that Instagram introduced temporary 2× playback for Reels. The reported action is to press and hold either edge of the Reel screen; releasing returns playback to its normal rate. Read the report at Social Media Today.
To test the Reels behavior, open a Reel, press and hold the left or right edge, and watch for accelerated playback. Do not transfer that instruction to Stories. Reels and Stories are separate surfaces with separate interaction models, and a feature on one is not evidence that the other has it.

How to identify which behavior you are seeing
You are watching a WhatsApp Status
Look for the WhatsApp Status viewer and try the right-edge hold. If the clip accelerates only while your finger is down, you are seeing the reported temporary gesture. If nothing changes, there is no documented viewer setting you can use to force 2× playback on that account.

You are watching an Instagram Story
Use the left and right tap zones to move among Story segments. A tap that advances to another clip is navigation, not speed control. Do not infer a Stories 2× mode from an Instagram Reel you watched earlier.
You are watching an Instagram Reel
Try pressing and holding either screen edge. The reported Reels feature is temporary, so releasing should restore normal playback. The gesture’s presence on Reels says nothing about the availability of a similar control in Stories.

Confusing trim with speed
Trimming a WhatsApp upload removes material from the start or end. It does not alter the frame rate or make the video play faster for viewers. Use a separate editor before uploading if you need a permanently accelerated clip.
Assuming a beta rollout is universal
A beta report can describe a real feature that is still limited by account, operating system or app build. WhatsApp’s reported Status gesture was being released to some testers, so the same press-and-hold action may work for one account and do nothing for another.

Using a Reels instruction in Stories
Instagram’s reported 2× gesture is tied to Reels. Stories have different tap-to-advance behavior, and no equivalent speed control is verified in the cited material. Keep the surface name attached to every instruction.
Expecting an always-on speed preference
Both reported gestures are temporary. They accelerate playback only while the edge is held and end when the finger is released. Neither report describes a permanent 2× setting that applies to every video.
What you can reliably do today
- For WhatsApp viewing: open a Status and test a right-side press-and-hold. Treat it as a beta-dependent feature, not a guaranteed control.
- For WhatsApp posting: use the built-in trim slider to select the segment you want, observing the 90-second maximum and supported formats stated in the iOS guide.
- For Instagram Stories: use taps to move through clips; there is no verified 2× Stories control in the cited material.
- For Instagram Reels: test a press-and-hold on either edge for the reported temporary 2× mode.
- For a permanently faster Status: create an accelerated copy in a video editor before uploading, because trimming alone does not change playback speed.
Bottom line for viewers
WhatsApp Status is the only surface in this comparison with a newly reported, rollout-dependent 2× gesture: hold the right edge and release when you want normal speed. Instagram’s equivalent report concerns Reels, where either edge can be held. Instagram Stories has no playback-speed control verified here, so a Reels tutorial should not be presented as a Stories solution.
