Yes—many open-world games let you bypass nighttime, but there is no universal “skip night” button. Depending on the title, you may open a direct Wait menu, sleep in a bed or camp, choose Morning/Noon/Night at a campfire, or remain asleep while the game accelerates the clock. Combat, quests, survival settings, cooldowns and location rules can prevent the transition. The reliable approach is to identify which time-change system your game uses rather than assume instructions from another open world will work.
What “skip nighttime” means in an open-world game
Time skipping can mean several different things. A game may jump immediately to a selected hour, offer only broad periods such as morning or evening, or simulate the passage of time at a faster rate while your character sleeps. Some systems are available almost anywhere; others require a bed, camp, hotel room or campfire.

These distinctions matter when you are trying to reach daylight for visibility, a shop’s opening hours, a quest trigger, a safer route or a particular weather state. A method that works in one game may be unavailable, restricted or mechanically different in another.
The four common ways to pass the night
1. Use a direct Wait menu
A direct Wait command is the most precise method. In Skyrim Special Edition, the official manual lists “Wait” among the default controls. Open that command, select a duration, and the game advances the clock without requiring a bed or camp.

Wait menus are useful when you need a specific number of in-game hours rather than a broad destination. They can also be convenient when you are far from settlements. However, the command may be disabled while you are in combat, inside a scripted scene, under a survival rule or in another restricted state. The exact duration limits and location rules belong to the individual game.
2. Sleep in a bed, camp or hotel
Many games make sleeping the primary time-control interaction. Red Dead Redemption 2 provides several sleep locations: Arthur’s gang camp, a wilderness camp and hotel rooms in towns. Its sleep interface lets you choose morning, noon or evening, so you can clear darkness without manually counting hours.
Sleeping is not always an unlimited loop. A PowerPyx guide reports that Red Dead Redemption 2 permits two consecutive sleeps before a cooldown. If the option disappears after repeated use, wait for the cooldown or use another permitted activity instead of treating the behavior as a bug.

Bed systems can also carry gameplay effects. A sleep interaction may restore health, advance a quest, refresh a camp or alter the weather. Read the confirmation text before selecting a destination if you are trying to preserve a particular state.

3. Select a destination period at a campfire or bed
Some games present a small set of named destinations instead of a numeric clock. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, approach a campfire and choose to sit, or use a bed. The menu offers Morning, Noon or Night. This gives you a predictable way to avoid an inconvenient time of day and can also bypass unfavorable weather.
The associated Zelda time reference describes these campfire and sleep transitions as direct clock changes: the game sets the clock to the selected destination rather than running every intervening hour at normal speed. In practical terms, selecting Morning is an immediate time-state change, not a request to watch the entire night pass.
4. Let an accelerated sleep simulation run
Not every game performs an instant transition. An official developer announcement for one title describes sleeping in a bed or tactical tent while nighttime runs at 400% speed. A complete cycle can take up to three real-time minutes.

Leaving the bed early may stop the simulation, and repeatedly looking for a loading screen can make a working system appear broken. The important question is whether the game is accelerating its clock, not whether it displays an immediate cut.

How to pass time until morning: a practical procedure
Use this sequence when you do not yet know which system your game supports.
- Check the pause or interaction menu. Look for labels such as Wait, Rest, Sleep, Camp, Sit by Fire or Pass Time. A direct Wait entry usually indicates that you can advance time without finding a location.
- Leave combat and scripted interactions. Sheathe your weapon, finish nearby enemy encounters and allow dialogue or event scenes to end. Time controls are commonly blocked while the game is enforcing a scripted state.
- Find the nearest valid location. If no Wait command exists, look for a bed, owned room, hotel, personal camp, wilderness camp or usable campfire. A decorative object may not be an active time-change point.
- Open the destination choices. Read whether the interface requests a number of hours or offers named periods such as Morning, Noon, Evening and Night. Numeric controls give finer precision; named periods are faster when you only need daylight.
- Confirm the transition behavior. If the screen changes immediately, the game is jumping the clock. If your character lies down and the world remains active, wait for the accelerated simulation to finish.
- Verify the result in the world. Check the sky, clock, lighting, shop availability or quest marker. A sleep animation may advance only part of the day, and some games apply a cooldown after one transition.
Why the option may be unavailable
Combat or danger status
Games often disable waiting and sleeping when enemies are nearby or your character is considered threatened. Move to a safe area, clear the encounter and try again. In a camp system, leaving the danger radius may be enough; in a direct Wait system, you may need to finish the entire combat state.
Quest and scripted restrictions
Story missions can lock the clock to preserve an event’s timing. If a Wait or Sleep command is missing during a quest, follow the objective until the scene resolves. Trying to force the transition can be impossible by design.
Survival rules and resource costs
Survival modes may require food, warmth, a shelter rating or another condition before allowing rest. Some games also attach healing, fatigue or resource consumption to sleeping. Check the status panel and the interaction prompt rather than assuming that a blocked bed is a technical failure.

Cooldowns and consecutive-use limits
A time-change interaction may work once and then disappear temporarily. The reported two-sleeps limit in Red Dead Redemption 2 is an example of a deliberate cooldown. Travel, exploration or another in-game activity may be required before the same option becomes available again.
Location-specific rules
A bed in a settlement may be usable while a bedroll in the wilderness is not, or the reverse. Hotel rooms, owned homes, camps and temporary shelters can each have separate permissions. If one location fails, try another recognized rest point rather than repeatedly activating the same object.

There are two legitimate answers. Destination-based systems skip directly to the chosen period, while accelerated systems make the intervening hours pass quickly in real time. The interface and animation usually reveal which model is active:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Immediate result: the clock and lighting change as soon as you confirm Morning, Noon or another destination.
- Visible sleep interval: your character remains in bed or a tent while the sky and clock progress rapidly.
- Partial advance: the game wakes you after a fixed number of hours, so you may need a second permitted rest to reach dawn.
Do not close the menu or cancel the animation simply because the night has not vanished instantly. An accelerated system may be functioning normally while it takes the advertised real-time interval to complete.

Choosing the best method for your goal
| Goal | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reach a precise hour | Direct Wait menu | You can enter a duration instead of accepting a broad period. |
| Get daylight quickly | Campfire or bed with a Morning choice | A named destination can set the clock in one selection. |
| Rest while advancing the world | Bed, camp or hotel sleep | Sleep may combine time passage with healing or camp functions. |
| No rest point nearby | Direct Wait, if available; otherwise permitted fast travel | Fast travel can move elapsed in-game time, but it is primarily a movement system. |
| Avoid an instant transition | Accelerated sleep | The game preserves a visible passage of time, often at a faster rate. |
Can fast travel get you past nighttime?
Fast travel is mainly a movement mechanic, not a dedicated time-skip control. Rockstar Support documents setting up a camp in single-player Red Dead Redemption and selecting “Travel to Destination” for a visited town or waypoint. Because travel consumes elapsed in-game time, arriving at the destination may place you at a later point in the day.
Use fast travel as a secondary option when the game permits it. It may be unavailable during missions, danger states or location restrictions, and it does not necessarily land you at morning. If your goal is a specific daylight period, a Wait, Sleep or campfire menu is more predictable.
Weather, quests and shops: side effects to check
Changing the clock can do more than brighten the sky. In Tears of the Kingdom, the campfire or bed choice can bypass unfavorable weather as well as an unwanted time of day. Elsewhere, vendors may open or close, wildlife and enemies may follow schedules, and quest objectives may become active only during a defined period.

A quick troubleshooting checklist
- Look for Wait, Rest, Sleep, Camp or Sit by Fire in the current interaction and pause menus.
- Confirm that you are out of combat and not inside a scripted sequence.
- Try a recognized bed, camp, hotel room or campfire rather than a decorative object.
- Read whether the choice is a number of hours or a named period.
- Wait through the full animation if the game uses accelerated time.
- Check for cooldowns, survival requirements and consecutive-use limits.
- Verify the sky, clock, weather and quest state after the transition.
The key takeaway
Open-world games commonly provide a way to move beyond nighttime, but the implementation is title-specific. Skyrim Special Edition documents a direct Wait command; Red Dead Redemption 2 uses designated sleep locations and broad destination periods; The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lets campfires and beds set Morning, Noon or Night; and some games accelerate sleep at 400% rather than jumping instantly. Identify the interaction, its restrictions and its transition style, then choose the option that matches whether you need precision, speed or a safe place to rest.
