No—not in the standard iPhone status bar. iOS does not provide a setting to place the calendar date beside the time at the top of the screen. Apple’s status-bar guidance describes that strip as a place for device-state information such as time, cellular connection and battery, not a customizable widget area (Apple Human Interface Guidelines).
You can still keep the date easy to see with the Lock Screen, a Calendar widget on the Home Screen or Today View, or (for accessibility-focused setups) Assistive Access.

First, identify which “top bar” you mean
- Status bar: the narrow strip at the upper edge of the normal iPhone interface, usually showing the time and device-status indicators. It cannot be configured to show the calendar date.
- Lock Screen date row: the date displayed above the large Lock Screen clock. This is the closest built-in glance view, but it is not the in-app status bar.
- Home Screen and Today View: places where a Calendar widget can show the date after unlocking (or, if enabled, from the Lock Screen).
- Assistive Access status bar: a specialized simplified interface with its own date-and-time control.
Why the date cannot be added beside the status-bar time
There is no supported Settings path for adding a date to the normal status bar. The standard Date & Time settings control automatic time, time zone and 12- or 24-hour display; they do not add new status-bar content. Apple Support Community guidance likewise points users to the Lock Screen, Calendar app or widgets instead (community answer).

Show the date on the Lock Screen
The Lock Screen normally places the date above the large clock. If that area was changed, restore it with the Lock Screen editor:
- Wake the iPhone and stay on the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper selector appears.
- Tap Customize, then choose Lock Screen.
- Tap the date area above the clock.
- Select the available date or calendar presentation you want.
- Tap Done.
Apple documents the date, time and widget areas as editable Lock Screen elements (Lock Screen customization guide). This view is available before unlocking after you wake the phone, but it does not remain visible inside every app. Exact wording and formatting can vary with iOS version, language, region and the selected Lock Screen style.
Add a Calendar widget to the Home Screen
For a date that is available after unlocking, add Apple’s Calendar widget:

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Go to the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit at the top, then Add Widget.
- Search for Calendar.
- Swipe through the available widget sizes and styles.
- Tap Add Widget, drag it to the desired position and tap Done.
Apple’s current widget guide covers adding, moving, resizing and editing widgets (iPhone User Guide). Choose the smallest style that clearly shows the current day and date if Home Screen space matters. Larger styles provide more calendar context but occupy more space and may reveal more information at a glance.
Use Today View when you want to save Home Screen space
Today View is a separate widget panel. From the Home Screen, swipe right from the left edge, then scroll to the widget area. Touch and hold the background, add or arrange a Calendar widget, and leave it there instead of placing one on an app page.
To make Today View available while the phone is locked:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
- Enter your passcode.
- Under Allow Access When Locked, turn on Today View and Search.
Widgets can be used in Today View, the Home Screen, Lock Screen and StandBy, although available styles depend on the app and iOS release (Apple’s widget instructions). A locked-phone widget can expose personal information, including upcoming Calendar events. Leave lock-screen access disabled if that privacy risk outweighs the convenience (Apple’s Lock Screen privacy guidance).

The simplest alternative: keep Calendar on the first Home Screen page
The built-in Calendar icon is a no-setup fallback. Keep it on the first Home Screen page for a quick visual check or tap it to open the full calendar. It does not put the date in the status bar and is less configurable than a widget, but it avoids adding a widget or using Today View. Apple Community guidance lists the Calendar icon and widget among the practical alternatives (community discussion).
Assistive Access is a specialized exception
Apple’s Assistive Access documentation describes a Date and Time setting that can show the date or time on its Lock Screen or status bar. This applies to Assistive Access, Apple’s simplified accessibility interface—not to the ordinary iPhone interface.

Use it when the person also needs Assistive Access features. Enabling Assistive Access changes the overall interaction model, so it is excessive if the only goal is to add a date beside the normal status-bar time. The exact controls can vary by iPhone model, language and iOS release.

The Lock Screen date disappeared
- Touch and hold the active Lock Screen.
- Tap Customize and select Lock Screen.
- Tap the area above the clock, not the lower widget row.
- Re-select the date or calendar display, then tap Done.
You may be editing a different wallpaper, looking at the Home Screen rather than the Lock Screen, or have changed the date area while customizing widgets.

The Calendar widget is not listed
- Confirm that you are editing the Home Screen or Today View, then choose Edit followed by Add Widget.
- Search for Calendar, not only “date.”
- Check that Apple’s Calendar app is installed and available.
- Swipe through all sizes; some styles are unavailable on particular iOS versions or screen layouts.
- Look for the widget inside a Smart Stack if it was added there instead of as a standalone widget.
Apple explains that widgets can be searched, resized, moved, edited and placed in Smart Stacks in its widget guide.

The date appears only after a swipe
That is expected when the Calendar widget is in Today View. Today View is a space-saving glance panel, not a replacement for the persistent status bar.
You want a particular month-name or date format
Do not assume every iPhone offers the same format. Lock Screen presentations and Calendar widget styles depend on iOS version, language, region, available space and the selected widget. Apple documents customization, but not one universal format for every device.
Choose the best option
| Need | Best choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| See the date before unlocking | Lock Screen date row | Requires waking the phone and is not visible inside apps |
| See it after unlocking | Home Screen Calendar widget | Uses Home Screen space |
| Keep app pages uncluttered | Today View Calendar widget | Requires a swipe |
| Keep calendar details private | Home Screen widget with lock-screen access disabled | Not available until the phone is unlocked |
| Need an accessibility-focused simplified interface | Assistive Access Date and Time setting | Changes the overall iPhone interface |
The Bottom Line
The normal iPhone status bar cannot show the calendar date beside the time. Use the Lock Screen for a pre-unlock glance, a Calendar widget for the Home Screen, Today View to avoid Home Screen clutter, or Assistive Access only when its broader accessibility interface is appropriate.
