Yes—but YouTube does not automatically burn Super Chat messages into prerecorded footage. If you send the video as an active YouTube livestream, viewers may use Super Chat in an eligible Live Chat. To show messages over the video itself, add a chat overlay in your encoder and send that composed picture to YouTube. The chat beside the player and an overlay within the video are separate displays.
What viewers see by default
Super Chat is a Live Chat feature: eligible viewers can pay to post brightly colored, pinned messages during live streams and Premieres. YouTube notes that not every chat supports Super Chats. When a viewer watches on YouTube, Live Chat appears beside the player; that does not mean chat is part of the video image. Live Chat is not available on embedded players, and subscriber-only settings can restrict chat features. YouTube’s live-stream guidance explains these distinctions.

How to put chat over prerecorded footage
Use a streaming encoder to play the finished video and composite a chat widget into the encoder’s output. That combined output—not YouTube’s watch-page chat by itself—is what viewers see in the video frame.

- Prepare the prerecorded video. Add it as a media source in your encoder and confirm that it plays as intended. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes sending a produced stream to YouTube.
- Set up a chat overlay. In OBS, add a Browser Source for a third-party chat overlay. OBS explains that it does not itself provide a built-in facility to show stream chat in the stream, but that overlays can be embedded with a Browser Source. See the OBS instructions.
- Position and test it. Arrange the overlay within the video frame so it does not obscure important content. Confirm that it is readable at the intended output size.
- Verify Super Chat behavior before going public. A widget that displays ordinary YouTube chat is not automatically confirmed to display Super Chats, their paid highlighting, or pinned-message behavior. Streamlabs documents a Chat Box widget for YouTube, but its documentation does not establish that every Super Chat treatment is rendered. Check its Chat Box setup guidance and test your chosen integration in a private or unlisted setup.
Premiere is different from an active livestream
A YouTube Premiere lets viewers watch a prerecorded video together and chat in real time. YouTube says viewers can chat during Premieres and that some Live Chats support Super Chats. Its documentation does not say that a Premiere automatically places those messages over the video image. If your goal is an on-video overlay, use an encoder workflow and verify the widget rather than assuming the Premiere interface will composite chat. YouTube’s live-stream help covers both Live Chat and Premieres.

What happens to chat after the broadcast
YouTube can retain Live Chat replay alongside a stream archive, reproducing the chat as it appeared during the live broadcast; replay is on by default for live streams. Once the stream ends, live chat itself is no longer available, though viewers may be able to comment below the video. YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance describes replay and post-stream availability.
Common problems and fixes
- The chat is beside the video, not over it: that is YouTube’s native watch-page presentation. Add and position a chat overlay in the encoder if you need chat inside the video image.
- The overlay shows regular chat but not Super Chats: the widget may not render Super Chat-specific styling or messages. Check its feature documentation and test it before promising viewers that paid messages will appear.
- No chat appears: check the watch-page Live Chat, whether the chat supports the feature, and whether settings such as subscriber-only mode limit participation. Embedded players do not provide YouTube Live Chat.
- The overlay obscures the video or is hard to read: reposition or resize it in the encoder preview and test the finished composition before going live.
