Yes. Save the Copilot Audio Overview as an audio file, then share that file from OneDrive. The recipient needs permission to the saved MP3, not permission to the Word documents, PDFs, meeting recordings, or other files used to create it.
That answer applies to the listen-only use case. Sharing the Copilot Notebook is different: it can expose links to source files, but it does not guarantee that the recipient can open every source or use Copilot against those sources.

The short answer: share the saved audio, not the workspace
A Copilot Audio Overview becomes independent of its source permissions when you save it as an audio file. In the documented OneDrive workflow, the saved result is an MP3 placed in the Recordings folder. You can then use OneDrive’s normal Share controls to give another person access to that MP3.

The recipient can listen to the file without being granted access to the original material. Sharing the MP3 does not silently share the source documents, nor does it give the recipient a way to ask Copilot new questions grounded in those documents.

There are therefore two different actions that are often confused:
- Share the saved audio: a listen-only delivery of the generated recording.
- Share the Copilot Notebook: a workspace-sharing action that may also involve permissions to linked files.
Choose the first route when the other person only needs to hear the overview. Choose the second only when they need the Notebook, its references, or source-grounded interaction and you are prepared to manage those permissions separately.
First identify where the overview was created
Microsoft uses “audio overview” for related experiences in more than one product surface. The save and access rules are similar in principle, but their eligibility and content limits are not identical.
OneDrive audio overview
OneDrive’s documented workflow creates an overview from supported content such as Word documents, PDFs, and Teams meeting recordings. When you save the result, OneDrive stores an MP3 in the Recordings folder. That MP3 is an ordinary OneDrive file for sharing purposes.

The OneDrive page describes the feature as English-only, requires at least 200 words in the source for the documented workflow, and says generation may take a few minutes. Saving is available for non-encrypted files. These conditions describe the OneDrive workflow; they should not be treated as universal rules for every Copilot Notebook rollout.
Copilot Notebook audio overview
A Notebook audio player includes Save to OneDrive. After saving, share the resulting file from OneDrive rather than sharing the Notebook if your goal is simply to let someone listen.
The Notebook help material requires at least one reference file and lists eight audio languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese. Those language options are distinct from OneDrive’s English-only description. Microsoft also notes that Notebook audio overviews are available to commercial Microsoft 365 users with work or school accounts using Microsoft Entra ID. A Copilot license and an active SharePoint or OneDrive license are required to create Copilot Notebooks. The same page mentions Personal, Family, and Premium Notebook availability, but that does not establish that those consumer plans include the audio-overview feature.

SharePoint has a related overview experience for documents and News posts. Its documented document flow also covers Word files, PDFs, and Teams recordings, describes English-only support and a 200-word minimum, and allows saving to OneDrive subject to limitations. It is a related surface, not proof that every audio overview has the same formats, languages, or sharing behavior.

Audio file versus Notebook sharing

Microsoft Support states: “Sharing a notebook doesn’t just share the notebook, it can also give others access to files inside it.” The statement appears on Share a Microsoft Copilot Notebook, last updated June 2026. It is a warning to inspect the linked content before sharing a Notebook, not a claim that every source will automatically become available.
How to share the audio without sharing source files
- Open the audio player. In the OneDrive or Notebook experience where the overview was created, look for Save to OneDrive. If the option is missing, confirm that the item is eligible for saving; in the documented OneDrive flow, encrypted files cannot be saved.
- Wait for the file to finish saving. For the OneDrive workflow, look in the Recordings folder for the resulting MP3. Confirm that the file opens and plays before sending its link.
- Select the MP3 and choose Share. Use OneDrive’s ordinary sharing dialog. You can grant access to specific people or use a link option allowed by your organization’s sharing policy. OneDrive files are private until you share them.
- Set the narrowest useful permission. If the person only needs to listen, avoid granting edit access to the file or its containing folder. Your administrator may limit anonymous links, external recipients, downloads, or forwarding.
- Send the invitation or link to the intended account. If you chose specific people, the recipient may need to sign in with the account that received the invitation. A link copied from one account does not override the file’s permissions.
- Tell the recipient what they are receiving. Explain that the file is a generated overview and that it does not include access to the Notebook or its references. If they need the underlying material, arrange a separate permission grant.
This workflow creates a separate permission boundary: access to the MP3 is controlled by the MP3’s OneDrive sharing settings, while access to the source material remains controlled by each source’s permissions.
What sharing the Notebook changes
Sharing a Notebook is appropriate when the recipient must inspect references, continue work in the workspace, or use Copilot with the Notebook’s context. It is not the privacy-preserving shortcut for distributing an audio recording.
When you share the Notebook, Microsoft may invite recipients to linked files. The owner must have permission to share each linked file, and permission transfer can fail for particular files. A recipient may therefore see the Notebook but receive an access-request prompt when opening one of its references. Premium sources can impose additional plan restrictions.

Before sending a Notebook invitation:
- Review the reference list and remove material the recipient should not discover.
- Check whether each linked file permits sharing with that person or group.
- Decide whether external sharing is permitted by your tenant’s OneDrive and SharePoint policies.
- Explain that Notebook access and source-file access are separate decisions.
If the recipient only needs the narration, do not share the Notebook at all. Save the audio and share that file.

Microsoft’s documentation also warns that generated audio can contain inaccuracies or glitches. For legal, safety, financial, academic, or otherwise sensitive decisions, share the source document or a checked transcript as well, with the appropriate permissions. The MP3 should be treated as a convenient summary, not as a replacement for verifying important facts.

The link opens an access-denied page
Open the MP3’s sharing pane and verify that the exact recipient account was included. If you used a people-specific invitation, ask the recipient to sign in with that identity rather than a second personal or work account.

OneDrive and SharePoint administrators can restrict external users, anonymous links, downloads, or particular domains. The official documentation does not establish one universal tenant configuration. If the recipient is outside your organization, ask an administrator which sharing method is permitted instead of repeatedly changing the link.

The audio file is not present
Return to the player and confirm that Save to OneDrive completed. Then search the Recordings folder and check the file’s owner. A Notebook player can describe saving without specifying every output detail for every account or rollout, so use the actual saved file as the object you share.
The save command is unavailable
In the documented OneDrive workflow, encrypted files cannot be saved. The source may also be in a surface or account configuration that does not expose saving. You can share the Notebook or source only if the recipient is allowed to access them, or provide a separately approved recording if your organization permits that practice.
The recipient expected to ask Copilot questions
Explain the difference between a recording and a workspace. The MP3 contains the generated audio; it does not carry the Notebook’s references or grant source-grounded Copilot interaction. Share the relevant Notebook and files separately, after reviewing their permissions.
A practical decision checklist
- Only listening is required: save the overview to OneDrive and share the MP3.
- The recipient needs to verify claims: share the MP3 plus the specific source files they are authorized to read.
- The recipient needs continued Copilot work: share the Notebook and check every linked-file permission.
- The source is encrypted: expect saving to be unavailable in the documented OneDrive flow; do not assume Notebook sharing solves the restriction.
- The recipient is external: test the exact account and confirm organizational sharing policy before distributing the link.
- The topic is sensitive: review the generated audio for errors and provide a verified transcript or source material where appropriate.
The safest default is therefore simple: create and share a separate MP3 when the person needs to hear the overview, and treat Notebook or source-file access as an additional permission decision rather than an automatic consequence of sending the audio.
