Can You Set Up Halo: Combat Evolved Split-Screen on Nintendo 64?

You cannot set up an official Halo: Combat Evolved split-screen game on a Nintendo 64. The original game’s documented split-screen feature belongs to the Xbox release, and Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 catalog does not list Halo: Combat Evolved. No N64 controller, adapter, or menu setting can make an unreleased port run on that console.

The direct answer

There is no legitimate N64 setup procedure for Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer because Halo: Combat Evolved was never officially released for Nintendo 64. An N64 cannot load the Xbox game, and the console has no Halo cartridge, disc support, or official port to configure.

This is a platform mismatch, not a missing accessory. A controller adapter can change how an existing game receives inputs; it cannot provide the game software, graphics engine, networking code, or console compatibility required for an Xbox title.

What the official documentation says

Halo’s split-screen feature is documented for Xbox

The original Halo: Combat Evolved Xbox manual states: “This option allows up to four players to play in split screen mode on a single Xbox video game system.” That is a capability of the Xbox release and its supported hardware.

  • XBOX PLAY ANYWHERE — Play across XBOX Series X|S and Windows PCs at no additional cost, with shared progress and achievements across supported devices.

Microsoft’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary manual separately describes playing the campaign in split-screen mode with a friend offline or over Xbox LIVE by starting your own lobby or joining a friend’s. That documentation applies to the Anniversary release, not to Nintendo 64.

Nintendo 64 has no official Halo entry

Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 game catalog lists the games released for the system and contains no Halo: Combat Evolved entry. Consequently, there is no N64 cartridge, official download, N64 menu option, or Nintendo-supported multiplayer mode for this game.

Why an adapter or extra controller cannot fix it

It is easy to assume that four N64 controllers, a multitap-style accessory, or an Xbox-to-N64 adapter could create split-screen play. Those devices only address input or controller connectivity. They do not convert an Xbox game into an N64 game.

  • No game software: The N64 does not have an official Halo: Combat Evolved release to launch.
  • No compatible program code: Xbox and Nintendo 64 use different processors, graphics systems, operating environments, and media formats.
  • No supported menu: An N64 game cannot expose Halo’s Xbox multiplayer lobby or split-screen code.
  • No documented hardware path: The Xbox manual’s four-player statement does not describe N64 hardware or adapters.

If an accessory advertises “N64 multiplayer,” that describes games released for N64 that support the accessory. It does not establish compatibility with a game that was never released for the console.

What the documented local experience actually supports

Release or platform Platform availability Local split-screen support Local-player information Mode and connection details
Original Halo: Combat Evolved Official Xbox release Yes Up to four players on one Xbox Split-screen mode on a single Xbox video game system
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Microsoft-documented release Yes, for the campaign The cited manual describes playing with a friend Offline split-screen or Xbox LIVE through a lobby or a friend’s lobby
Nintendo 64 No official Halo: Combat Evolved release is listed No documented Halo mode No supported Halo player count There is no official N64 setup

The original Xbox manual’s “up to four” statement is feature documentation, not a separately reported sales or performance statistic. The Anniversary wording confirms campaign split-screen with a friend but does not, in the cited sentence, establish a different local-player limit.

How to proceed if you want Halo split-screen

Use an Xbox version for the original documented feature

For the capability described in the original manual, use the Xbox release on supported Xbox hardware and follow the game’s own multiplayer instructions. The manual confirms that one Xbox can display split-screen play for up to four players. You will need the compatible game release, the console that supports it, and the required controllers.

Use a separately supported modern release

If you want the Anniversary campaign, consult that edition’s current platform and multiplayer documentation. Microsoft’s manual describes two routes: play campaign split-screen offline with a friend, or use Xbox LIVE by starting a lobby or joining a friend’s lobby. Platform availability, online-service requirements, and controller support can differ by edition, so do not transfer Xbox instructions to N64 hardware.

If the requirement is specifically an N64

There is no official way to meet both requirements—“Nintendo 64 hardware” and “Halo: Combat Evolved split-screen.” Choose an N64 game that was actually released for the system and documents local multiplayer, or change the hardware requirement and use a supported Halo release. No N64 accessory can bridge that software gap.

Common misconceptions

“I only need four N64 controllers”

Four controllers matter only after a compatible game recognizes them. The four-player statement in the Halo Xbox manual refers to one Xbox, not to an N64 with four attached controllers.

“An adapter should translate the controls”

Input translation cannot supply the missing Halo program. Even if an adapter made an N64 controller electrically usable on another system, it would not create an N64 port or add split-screen code.

“A menu option must be hidden somewhere”

There is no Halo menu on an official N64 release. Searching every N64 multiplayer or controller setting will not reveal one, because Nintendo’s catalog does not list the game for that platform.

A quick verification checklist

  1. Check the title and platform printed on the game packaging or digital listing.
  2. Confirm that it identifies an Xbox release or a separately supported modern edition, rather than Nintendo 64.
  3. Use that edition’s own manual for its split-screen mode, player limit, and online requirements.
  4. If the hardware is an N64, stop looking for adapters or setup codes: the official game release is absent.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: Halo: Combat Evolved split-screen is an Xbox feature, while Nintendo 64 is not an official Halo platform. Select a supported Xbox or modern release for local play, or select a different game if keeping the N64 is essential.
