No. Halo 3 multiplayer supports a maximum of 16 players, so a private 64-player match is not possible. You can still invite friends to a private Halo 3 Custom Game, but privacy settings control who joins; they do not raise the game’s player limit. For current online play, the supported route is Halo 3 inside Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC).

| Original Halo 3 Custom Games | The original manual documents private parties and Xbox LIVE privacy choices. | Halo 3 multiplayer is limited to 16 players. The manual is historical and does not establish that every legacy online service remains available today. |
| Halo 3 in MCC online | Invite friends through the in-game Roster. Xbox and Windows PC players can play together online. | Halo 3’s 16-player maximum still applies. Each online friend needs MCC and an Xbox account. |
| MCC split-screen on Xbox | Up to four players can play locally on one Xbox, with a controller for each player. | This is local play; it does not add online slots or make a 64-player match possible. |
Set up a private Halo 3 match in MCC
Halo Support documents the MCC friend-invite flow and Xbox/PC multiplayer cross-play. Use the available Custom Game privacy controls to keep the session limited to your group.

- Add your friends on the Xbox network.
- Launch MCC and open the in-game Roster. Select a friend and choose Invite Player. Repeat for each person you want to invite.
- Have invited players accept. Their acceptances appear in the session roster.
- Start a Halo 3 Custom Game and use the available privacy controls to limit who can join. Keep the group at or below Halo 3’s 16-player maximum.
If you close and restart MCC, send the invitations again; Halo Support says invites must be re-sent after a restart. A PC player and an Xbox player can play together online in MCC.

Set privacy in the original Halo 3
Microsoft’s Halo 3 manual describes the original Xbox LIVE setup. From the Custom Games lobby, the party leader starts a party, chooses a network mode, then selects the desired Xbox LIVE privacy setting under Network. The manual lists these choices:
- Open Party: an open party setting.
- Friends Only: limits access to friends.
- Invite Only: limits access to invited players.
The party leader can invite people from the friends list. These choices manage access, not match capacity. Because the manual is historical, it should not be taken as confirmation that the original Xbox 360 service or every legacy feature is currently available. For current cross-platform instructions, use MCC.

Current MCC issues to know about
Halo Support’s Global Known Issues page reports status as of February 26, 2026, for build 1.3528.0.0. It lists occasional Halo 3 freezes during multiplayer and online connection interruptions. It also notes that a Halo 3 Custom Game Browser issue can send players into a private Custom Game instead of the intended browser session.
