Not through an Apple-documented method. Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions use GarageBand to turn an audio file into a ringtone, while its iOS 26 Voice Memos guide does not show a direct “set as ringtone” option. If you want to use a Voice Memo through Apple’s documented workflow, you’ll need GarageBand; the available Apple instructions don’t establish a GarageBand-free alternative.
What Apple’s documented method supports
Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions describe using GarageBand on iPhone to import an audio file, prepare it, and export it as a ringtone. The audio must be available somewhere GarageBand can browse through Files, such as on the iPhone or in iCloud.

Apple’s iOS 26 Voice Memos guide covers recording and editing memos, and explains that recordings can sync across signed-in Apple devices when Voice Memos is enabled in iCloud settings. It does not document assigning a memo directly as a ringtone. The Apple material reviewed also does not give explicit instructions for moving a Voice Memo into Files, so the steps below begin once the recording is available there.

Make a ringtone from the Voice Memo with GarageBand
- Make the recording available in Files. Confirm that the memo is available as an audio file in a location GarageBand can browse, either on the device or in iCloud.
- Import it into GarageBand. Start a new audio recording project on iPhone. Open Tracks and the Loops Browser, tap Files, browse to the audio file, then select and place it in the track view.
- Choose the ringtone section. Trim the audio to the part you want. Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions set a 30-second maximum. If the export is longer, GarageBand can shorten it automatically, or you can trim the project yourself before exporting.
- Export the ringtone. Return to My Songs, select the project, tap Share, then Ringtone. Name the ringtone and export it.
- Choose how to use it. After export, select Standard Ringtone to use it generally, Standard Text Tone, Assign to Contact, or Done.
Set or change where the tone is used
For the general ringtone, use Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Individual contacts can have their own ringtone. Apple also offers tones through the Tone Store, but availability and features vary by region; see Apple’s guide to tones and ringtones.

If avoiding GarageBand is essential
The Apple instructions cited here do not establish an Apple-supported way to convert a Voice Memo into a ringtone without GarageBand. That does not prove no third-party app or computer-based workaround exists, but the sources reviewed do not verify one’s reliability or iOS 26 compatibility. Treat claims that promise a direct Voice Memos ringtone option as unverified unless their current steps and compatibility are independently confirmed.
