Usually, you should not expect cash for an ordinary empty toner cartridge. The documented options are mostly free recycling, plus a conditional U.S. store-rewards program. A buyer advertising purchases of unused toner is not evidence that it will pay for spent cartridges. First identify the cartridge and its condition, then choose a return route that actually accepts it.
Can you sell an empty toner cartridge for cash?
There is no typical cash resale price for spent empty toner cartridges established by the available evidence. Keep three different outcomes separate: a cash sale, store rewards with conditions, and free recycling. A cartridge that is unopened or unused is also a different product from one that has been spent.

For example, SellToner advertises buying unused ink and toner. Its page does not establish that it buys empty cartridges. The page also advertises “up to $350 per cartridge,” an undated promotional maximum—not a typical price, guaranteed quote, or amount applicable to spent empties. Check its current terms directly if you have unused stock, and confirm the exact model, condition, quote, shipping, and payment before sending anything.
What to check before choosing a return option
- Read the brand and exact cartridge number from the label.
- Record whether it is empty, unopened or unused, original, remanufactured, refilled, or damaged.
- Decide whether you need cash, would use store rewards, or simply want free recycling.
- Check the current acceptance list, location-specific instructions, postage or pickup arrangements, and any purchase or monthly limits before handing it over or mailing it.
These checks matter because programs differ by brand, cartridge type, location, and return method. Do not send a cartridge until the program confirms that it accepts that item.

Where can you recycle toner cartridges or get rewards?

How do Office Depot / OfficeMax recycling rewards work?
The retailer’s current program terms say it accepts any brand in store and offers $2 in rewards per recycled cartridge, with rewards on no more than 10 cartridges per month. To qualify, you must make a qualifying purchase of at least $10 in the same month. Some purchases are excluded, so check the current terms before relying on the reward. It is store value, not cash, and the retailer says mail-in recycling does not earn rewards. The help page stating that all brands of ink and toner qualify was updated January 12, 2026.

How do HP and Brother returns work?
HP Planet Partners
HP says Planet Partners accepts nearly every Original HP cartridge and Samsung toner cartridge, with non-returnable items listed separately. Its U.S. page describes free mail-back labels and materials as well as participating-store drop-off. For bulk returns, HP says a free pallet pickup can be arranged for more than 76 toner cartridges. The program is available in more than 60 countries and territories, but acceptance rules and return methods are not necessarily the same in each country. Use HP’s U.S. recycling page or start from its local recycling instructions for your country.

Brother
Brother USA describes a free prepaid USPS return label for used Brother ink, toner, drum, and P-touch supplies. Log in or create an account, then repackage the empty item using packaging from the replacement where possible and follow the current return instructions. The page directs people outside the United States to country-specific programs; it does not state that Brother pays for returned supplies. See Brother’s environmental programs page.
Can a business recycle cartridges in bulk?
For a large quantity, ask the manufacturer or retailer about current collection logistics before packing everything. HP states that a free pallet pickup can be arranged for more than 76 toner cartridges. Staples Business describes free mail-back recycling for ink and toner of any brand and provides a contact for pickup, but the page does not establish the service terms for every account or location. Confirm eligibility and arrangements directly with HP or Staples Business.

Which option makes sense for your cartridge?
- Empty Original HP or Samsung toner: Check HP’s current acceptance list and local return instructions; use the free route if eligible.
- Empty Brother supply: Check Brother’s U.S. prepaid return process, or the country-specific route if outside the United States.
- Another brand or a refilled/remanufactured cartridge: Check the retailer’s in-store rules or the relevant manufacturer’s terms. HP’s consumer program does not accept other brands, refilled cartridges, or remanufactured cartridges.
- Any brand and you can use store rewards: Compare the Office Depot / OfficeMax reward against the required qualifying purchase and monthly limit; it is only useful as store value.
- Unopened or unused toner: You can investigate a buyer advertising unused supplies, but obtain confirmation for the precise cartridge and condition. Do not assume a buyer accepts spent empties.
What should you expect to earn?
The documented U.S. retailer reward is $2 per qualifying cartridge, capped at 10 rewarded cartridges per month and conditional on a qualifying $10 purchase that month. That is not cash and should not be treated as a resale price. The other documented routes here are recycling programs, not stated cash offers. No typical cash value for spent empty cartridges is established, so a specific cash estimate would be unsupported.
