Can You Self-Host Marimo Notebooks for Secure Team Collaboration?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—but distinguish marimo from marimohub. Marimo is an open-source reactive Python notebook that can run as a script, be deployed as an app, or be shared as browser-side WebAssembly. The documented self-hosted team platform is marimohub, a separate layer for storing, managing, and running notebooks. Its documentation describes configurable storage, compute, identity, and access control; that is not the same as saying the marimo editor alone provides a complete multi-user workspace.

What marimo is—and what the hub adds

Marimo notebooks are stored as Python files, designed to be Git-friendly, executable as scripts, and deployable as apps. The project also documents native SQL support. These properties make notebooks portable across ordinary Python workflows as well as marimo’s interactive interface. Marimo’s documentation describes the core notebook and app framework.

Marimohub is the documented platform layer for teams that need centralized notebook storage, management, execution, access control, and kernel lifecycle management. Its documentation describes an operator-configured environment in which the organization supplies or selects storage, compute, and identity backends. Examples named in that documentation include S3-compatible object storage, Modal sandboxes, and OpenID Connect (OIDC); confirm current compatibility and deployment maturity before choosing a setup. Marimohub documentation

In practical terms, sharing a .py notebook through Git is project collaboration; controlling who can access and run notebooks through a centrally managed service is a hub-level capability. The distinction matters when evaluating whether a setup meets a team’s workspace, governance, or operational needs.

Which deployment route fits your use case?

Route What runs where Team, access, and operations Important constraint
marimo core Interactive Python notebook or app served by a marimo process. Useful for individual work and app deployment; a core notebook is not, by itself, the documented centralized team-management platform. For remote exposure, configure authentication and restrict what the server watches.
marimohub Platform-managed notebook storage, execution, and kernels, with infrastructure configured by the operator. Documentation describes OIDC sign-in, domain restriction, access control, and kernel lifecycle management. Storage, compute, identity, and deployment details are configuration choices; documentation is not independent security certification or a formal service commitment.
Kubernetes operator and CLI workflow Notebook server and persistent storage run in a Kubernetes cluster; the documented CLI workflow uploads a notebook and syncs edits back when the editing command exits. The guide covers resource allocation, storage, lifecycle, and token authentication by default. Cluster operations and resource limits remain the operator’s responsibility. The guide also documents an option to disable token authentication, not a recommendation for exposed production use.
Static HTML with WebAssembly Python execution happens in the reader’s browser after the exported HTML and assets are hosted. Suitable for publishing an interactive artifact rather than providing a managed, editable team workspace. Offline export can bundle Python and packages, but data files and remote APIs or JavaScript need local alternatives to work offline.

How to run marimo for a team

Use the hub when you need centrally managed access and execution

Marimohub is the route whose documentation explicitly describes notebook management for teams. Plan the platform around the infrastructure and policies your organization will operate: storage permissions, compute isolation and limits, identity provider configuration, notebook access rules, and kernel lifecycle. OIDC sign-in and domain restriction are documented features, as is a fail-closed response when a policy check errors or times out. The documentation also says raw identity claims are not persisted, logged, or written to the session cookie; these are project-documented behaviors, not independent verification.

Do not infer that the presence of login and access-control settings settles every security question. The reviewed documentation does not establish independent audit or certification, a formal threat model, or a contractual service-level commitment. Those assurances may exist elsewhere, but are not established by these materials.

Use the Kubernetes route when you operate a cluster

The official Kubernetes guide documents a marimo operator and a kubectl-marimo workflow. The CLI can upload a notebook, provision persistent storage, start a server, and sync notebook changes back when the editing command exits. The guide documents token authentication by default and an option to turn it off. Kubernetes deployment guide

Keep token authentication enabled when a server is reachable beyond a trusted local environment. Disabling it is not an appropriate shortcut for an exposed production deployment. Treat persistent storage, cluster network policy, resource allocation, and lifecycle handling as operational responsibilities to validate for your own cluster.

Use Git and project configuration for shared notebook development

For collaborators editing files rather than using a managed hub, keep notebooks and project configuration in source control. Marimo projects can share dependencies through project configuration; sharing requirements and lockfiles helps teammates reproduce the environment. This improves repeatability, but it does not create hub-style identity checks or access control. Package management documentation

How to publish a notebook as a web app

Marimo supports serving a notebook as an app and exporting it as HTML with WebAssembly (WASM) for static hosting. Choose the app route when you want a server to run the notebook; choose HTML-WASM when you want the published page to run Python in the visitor’s browser. Cloudflare Workers and Pages are documented hosting destinations. Deployment guide WASM guide

Offline export can include the Python runtime and package dependencies, but that does not automatically make every notebook self-contained. Data files must be bundled or otherwise available locally, and remote APIs or JavaScript fetched from external services still require network access unless replaced with local resources. Check those dependencies before promising offline use.

Security checks before exposing a deployment

Security depends on how a particular instance is configured and exposed. The core server’s watch guidance warns that a notebook created in a watched gallery directory can appear and execute when opened. Watch only directories whose contents you trust, and use authentication when exposing a watched server remotely. CLI and watch guidance

Before a production decision, verify the exact deployment version and review these areas:

  • Network exposure: Which users or networks can reach the editor, app, hub, or cluster service?
  • Identity and permissions: Is authentication enabled and tested, and do notebook and domain access rules match the intended audience?
  • Storage: Are object-store or persistent-volume permissions scoped appropriately, and is backup and restore behavior understood?
  • Compute isolation: How are kernels isolated, resource-limited, and shut down?
  • Notebook trust: Are watched directories controlled so an untrusted notebook cannot be opened and executed unexpectedly?
  • Assurance and support: If your organization requires an independent security review, certification, threat model, or service commitment, verify it directly rather than treating implementation documentation as proof.

Choosing the right option

Choose based on the experience you need, not just the word “self-hosted.” For a centrally managed team environment, evaluate marimohub and its storage, compute, identity, and access-control configuration. For teams already operating Kubernetes, the operator and CLI workflow provide a documented cluster route. For code review and reproducible collaboration, use Git with shared project dependencies. For publishing an interactive artifact without a managed server, export HTML-WASM and account for data and network dependencies.

The documentation establishes meaningful differences in where notebooks run and how they are managed, but it does not provide a full cost or service-level comparison. Your production assessment should therefore include your own infrastructure, operational support requirements, and desired security assurance.
