After the Story’s usual 24-hour public lifespan, that leaves roughly another 24 hours to open it in Stories Archive and view its activity. The 48-hour clock starts when you post, not when the Story expires.
How long are Instagram Story viewers visible?
The Story and its viewer list have different time limits. Instagram Stories usually disappear from Feed, your profile, and Direct after 24 hours unless you add them to a Highlight. The viewer list is reported to remain available for up to 48 hours from the time of posting. These time limits are reported by XXStory and LikePatrol, which attribute the guidance to Instagram Help Center; the Help Center page itself was not directly available to verify.

So, if you want to check viewers after a Story disappears publicly, do it before 48 hours have passed since you posted it. For a Story that ran its full 24 hours, that is approximately the next 24 hours—not 48 hours after expiry.

- Open your Instagram profile and go to Stories Archive.
- Select the expired Story you want to check.
- Look for its viewer or activity information. The control’s name or placement may vary by app version.
This is the reported way to check an expired Story during the remaining viewer-list window. Current step-by-step labels have not been confirmed against Instagram’s live documentation.

Does Archive or a Highlight keep the viewer names?
No. Archive or Highlight can preserve the Story itself, but that does not keep its viewer names available indefinitely. According to the secondary reports above, names are no longer available after the 48-hour-from-posting window closes. The sources do not substantiate a way to recover the expired list or a third-party service that can restore it.
What the 48-hour guidance is based on
XXStory’s September 2026 article attributes the 48-hour limit and the 24-hour public lifespan to Instagram Help Center guidance, quoting it as: “You can view this information for up to 48 hours after posting by accessing your Archive. Only you can see your story viewer list.” That wording is reported by XXStory, rather than verified here against a directly accessible Instagram Help Center page. LikePatrol’s guide, updated September 18, 2026, also reports the same general limit. Instagram’s interface and feature rules can change, so check the current app if the Archive controls differ.
