To scan from a printer to a Samsung Galaxy tablet, use the printer maker’s Android app when it supports your exact model, or use Mopria Scan if the printer or multifunction printer (MFP) is Mopria-certified. Put the tablet and scanner on the same Wi-Fi network, select the device in the app, start the scan, and save or share the result. If the printer has no compatible Android scanning route, Samsung’s Camera app can capture the page instead and Samsung Notes can export that image as a PDF.
The distinction matters: a printer’s scanner uses the flatbed or automatic document feeder, while the Camera method photographs the paper with the tablet. Galaxy printing settings send content from the tablet to a printer; they do not automatically make the printer scanner available.

Choose the right scanning method
Start by deciding whether you need the printer’s optical scanner or simply a digital copy of a page.
| Route | Uses | What you need | Network requirement | Output and controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printer-maker Android app | Printer flatbed or feeder | An app that explicitly supports your printer model’s scan function | Usually Wi-Fi or the connection specified by the manufacturer | Depends on the app and model; preview, file type and sharing controls vary |
| Mopria Scan | Compatible scanner or MFP | Mopria Scan certification and the Mopria Scan Android app | Tablet and scanner/MFP on the same Wi-Fi network | Scan settings, preview and save/share options depend on the device and app version |
| Samsung Camera and Notes | Tablet camera pointed at the paper | A Galaxy tablet with the Camera app and Samsung Notes | None for capture; internet is not required to photograph the page | Image is saved in Gallery; Samsung Notes can export it as a PDF |
The first two routes preserve the purpose of a real document scanner. They are preferable for multipage work, pages that must remain flat, or documents where camera perspective and lighting would be a problem. The Camera route is the dependable fallback when the printer is not networked, lacks a supported Android app, or is not certified for Mopria Scan.

Check compatibility before connecting anything
Confirm that the printer can scan
A basic printer has no scanning hardware. Look for a flatbed glass platen, an automatic document feeder (ADF), or an “MFP” designation. The printer must also expose that scanner to Android through a supported app or protocol; being able to print from the tablet is not proof that scanning is supported.
Identify the exact model and software requirements
Read the model number from the printer’s front panel, rear label or network settings. Open the manufacturer’s current support page for that model and look for Android scanning instructions, a compatible app, supported Android versions and any firmware requirement. App names and menu labels differ by manufacturer, model, region and One UI version, so avoid following instructions written for a similar-looking printer.
Prepare the network
For Mopria Scan, the tablet and scanner/MFP must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Avoid putting one device on a guest network and the other on the main network; guest-network isolation commonly prevents discovery. Keep the printer powered on, online and out of sleep mode while you test. A USB-only printer may not be discoverable by an Android app unless its manufacturer documents a specific USB workflow.

Method 1: use the printer manufacturer’s Android app
This is usually the best first attempt because the app is designed around the printer’s exact capabilities.

- Reliable Wireless Connectivity - Enjoy stable and consistent connections with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz), ensuring smooth printing from anywhere in your home or office
- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
- Install or open the official Android app. Use the app named in the printer’s current manual or support instructions. Do not assume that a generic print-service plug-in includes scanning.
- Add the printer. Allow the app’s requested local-network or nearby-device permission, then choose the exact model discovered on Wi-Fi. If discovery fails, use the app’s manual-add option only when the manual provides the printer’s address or setup procedure.
- Open the Scan function. Look for a Scan, Scan document or similar command inside the printer app. A Print command alone is not evidence that the scanner is available.
- Load the original. Place one page face down on the flatbed using its alignment marks, or load a compatible stack into the ADF. Remove staples and clips and keep the paper within the feeder’s size limits.
- Set the available options. Choose color or black-and-white, resolution, page size and one-sided or two-sided scanning when those controls are offered. The available settings are model-specific.
- Start, review and save. Begin the scan, inspect the preview if the app provides one, then save, export or share the result. The app may offer image or PDF choices, but there is no universal format list across printer apps.
If the app cannot find a Scan command for your model, check the manual rather than guessing. Some apps support printing for a broad range of devices while restricting scanning to particular series.
Method 2: scan with Mopria Scan
Mopria Scan is an Android option for compatible scanners and MFPs. Its Google Play description says it can automatically connect Android phones and tablets to scanners or MFPs on the same Wi-Fi network. Mopria and device manufacturers advise checking certification for the specific scanner or MFP.
- Verify certification. Check the printer manufacturer’s specifications or Mopria compatibility information for the exact model. A printer that supports Mopria printing is not automatically confirmed to support Mopria scanning.
- Connect both devices to one Wi-Fi network. The tablet and the printer/MFP must be reachable on the same local network. Turn off any setting that isolates wireless clients while testing.
- Open Mopria Scan. Grant the local-network permissions Android requests. The app should search for compatible scanners and MFPs.
- Select the discovered device. If more than one scanner appears, match the model name shown on the printer. The app may ask you to choose a scanner source or confirm a connection.
- Place the document and select settings. Use the flatbed or ADF and choose the settings the device exposes. Mopria does not impose one set of controls for every model.
- Start the scan and handle the result. Review the preview when available, then use the app’s save, share or export control. The exact button names and file options depend on the Mopria Scan version and the scanner.
Canon documents importing scan data to an Android device with Mopria Scan, and Epson documents Mopria Scan for Android scanning from compatible products. Those instructions are product-specific examples, not a guarantee that every scanner from either manufacturer, or any other manufacturer, supports the same sequence.
Method 3: Samsung Mobile Print on supported network printers
Some Samsung laser-printer instructions hosted by HP describe scanning and faxing through Samsung Mobile Print. That workflow applies only to listed supported Samsung network-printer series. Historical Samsung material also described the app as handling printing, copying, faxing and scanning, but a 2016 announcement is not proof of current app-store availability or support for your tablet.

- Connect the tablet and printer to the network specified by the instructions.
- Open the app, add the supported printer and choose its Scan feature.
- Load the page, run the scan and follow the app’s save or share controls.
If the app is unavailable or your model is not listed, use the current manufacturer app, Mopria Scan when certification is confirmed, or the Camera fallback. Do not install an old package from an unverified download site merely because an older manual mentions it.
Fallback: scan the paper with the Galaxy tablet camera
Samsung documents a scanner-like Camera feature that does not use the printer at all. It is useful for a single page, a receipt or a printer that has no compatible Android scan route.
- Open the Camera app and select the normal photo view.
- Hold the tablet above the page so all four edges are visible and the page fills most of the frame. Use even lighting and avoid shadows or glare.
- When the Camera app offers Scan, tap it. If no prompt appears, move farther away, improve the lighting and keep the page flat and rectangular in the viewfinder.
- Capture and save the result. Samsung says the scanned image is stored in Gallery.
- For a PDF, open Samsung Notes, import the image, and use its PDF export command. The exact menu wording can vary with the Galaxy model and One UI version.
This approach is a camera capture, so perspective, focus and lighting determine quality. It does not retrieve data from the printer’s flatbed or feeder and may require manual cropping or rotation in Gallery or Samsung Notes.

Galaxy tablets can use Default Print Service or a manufacturer print plug-in to send documents to a printer. Samsung’s printing guidance covers selecting a print service, finding a printer and sending content outward from the tablet. Scanning reverses that direction: the printer must expose its scanner to an Android scanning app. Therefore, a printer can appear in the tablet’s print dialog while remaining absent from every scanning app.

When troubleshooting, look specifically for one of these confirmations:
- The printer maker’s app lists a Scan function for the exact model.
- The scanner or MFP is certified for Mopria Scan.
- The printer’s current manual documents Android scanning, including supported models and software.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The app finds no scanner
- Confirm the device is an MFP or has a working scanner, not a print-only model.
- Check that the printer is powered on, connected to Wi-Fi and not in an error state.
- For Mopria, put the tablet and printer on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
- Restart the printer, tablet and Wi-Fi router, then reopen the scanning app.
- Verify Mopria Scan certification or the manufacturer’s Android support for the exact model.
The printer appears for printing but not scanning
Treat this as a support difference, not a discovery failure. Keep the print service for printing, but install the model-specific scan app or check Mopria Scan certification. A generic print plug-in does not establish scanner support.
The scan starts but the result is missing
Check the app’s save location and Android storage or media permission. Look in the app’s document list, Gallery or the Files app, depending on where that app says it saves scans. Use Share or Export immediately after scanning if you need to place the file in cloud storage or another application.
The page is cropped, tilted or unreadable
On a printer scanner, align the page with the flatbed marks, keep the ADF guides snug and clean the glass if streaks appear. On the Camera route, increase room light, remove glare, keep the tablet parallel to the page and retake the image before exporting the PDF.

Menus do not match the instructions
Galaxy settings and app interfaces change with model, Android release, One UI version and region. Use the current manual for your printer and treat the steps above as the connection logic rather than fixed button names.
Save, share and organize the scanned file
After a printer-based scan, use the app’s preview to check every page before closing it. For multipage documents, confirm whether the app adds pages to one file or creates separate files; this behavior is model- and app-dependent. Name files with a date and subject, then store them in a folder that is backed up. If the app offers only images but you need a PDF, import the images into Samsung Notes or another document tool that you already trust and export from there.
For confidential papers, scan on your own network, avoid guest Wi-Fi with unknown users, review Android permissions, and share only through an account or destination you recognize. Delete temporary camera photos or duplicate exports when the final file is safely stored.

- Need the printer’s feeder or flatbed? Use the manufacturer app or Mopria Scan; the Camera app cannot control the printer.
- Do not know whether the model is supported? Find the exact model number and check current Android scan instructions or Mopria certification.
- Printer is visible only in the print dialog? That confirms printing, not scanning. Find a separate Scan function.
- No compatible app or certification? Use Camera, save to Gallery and export through Samsung Notes.
- Need a guaranteed file type? Verify the app’s documented output options; only Samsung’s Camera-to-Notes route is specifically documented here for PDF export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scan from a USB-only printer directly to a Galaxy tablet?
Only if the printer manufacturer documents a compatible Android USB workflow for that exact model. The documented Mopria route relies on same-Wi-Fi discovery, so a USB connection by itself does not make the scanner available.
Why can my tablet print to the device but not scan from it?
Printing and scanning are separate capabilities. The tablet may have a print service for the device even when no Android app or Mopria Scan support exposes its scanner.
Is the Samsung Camera scan the same as using the printer scanner?
No. Camera scan photographs the page with the tablet and saves it in Gallery; it never reads the printer’s flatbed or feeder.
