No—an ordinary PS5 does not run Windows PC game builds. Sony’s supported features do not provide a way to install Windows, launch a Steam or other Windows executable, or turn the console into a Windows gaming computer. The official options people often confuse with PC gaming are different: PS Remote Play sends a game running on a PS5 to a Windows PC, while PlayStation cloud streaming offers selected PlayStation titles. If you need to run a Windows game, use a compatible Windows gaming PC or another platform that supports that game.
Can you run Windows games on PS5?
Not natively, and there is no Sony-supported installation path for a Windows game on PS5. A Windows game is compiled for the Windows operating system and its PC hardware and software environment. A PS5 runs its own PlayStation system software and uses PlayStation game packages. In Sony’s documented support material, there is no supported method to install Windows, add a Windows executable, or execute a Windows PC build on the console.

This distinction matters because “play a PC game on PS5” can describe several completely different arrangements. In one, the PS5 actually runs the game. In another, a PC runs the game and a video stream is sent elsewhere. In a third, Sony’s servers run an eligible PlayStation game and stream it to a supported device. Only the first would be Windows-game execution on the PS5, and that is not an official PS5 capability.
Three different meanings of “playing a PC game on PS5”
| Option | Where the game runs | Can it run a Windows build? | What you actually need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native execution | The PS5 itself | No supported method identified by Sony | A PlayStation version of the game, if one exists; Windows installers and executables are not supported. |
| PS Remote Play | A PS5 or PS4 | No | Remote Play app on a Windows PC or Mac, an enabled console, the same PlayStation account, a supported controller connected by USB, and a suitable network. |
| PlayStation cloud streaming | Sony’s cloud service | No | PlayStation Plus Premium, an eligible PlayStation title, a supported region and device, and broadband access. |
| Windows gaming PC or another compatible PC platform | The PC | Yes, if the game and hardware are compatible | The game’s own Windows requirements, a compatible operating system, and any required store account or launcher. |
The table’s first three rows are not interchangeable. Remote Play is a remote-control and video-streaming feature for a console you own. Cloud streaming is a catalog service. Neither translates a Windows game into a PS5 game.

Can I play my Steam games on PS5?
Buying a game on Steam gives you a PC version tied to Steam’s supported operating systems and licensing. It does not create a PS5 version, and the Steam installer cannot be installed through the PS5 interface. A game that has both a Windows release and a PlayStation release normally requires the PlayStation edition separately; ownership of the PC edition should not be assumed to transfer.
If your goal is to use your Steam library, the reliable path is a compatible Windows gaming PC or another PC platform that supports the specific title. Check the game publisher’s current system requirements and platform list. No compatibility determination is provided here for any individual game, graphics card, processor or handheld, so a particular PC recommendation would require a separate assessment.
Does PS Remote Play let me play PC games on my PS5?
No. The direction is the opposite of what the question suggests. A PS5 runs a supported PlayStation game, and the Remote Play application displays that console session on a Windows PC or Mac. Sony describes the app as controlling the console from the computer; after connection, “the screen of your console displays on your PC.” Your computer is acting as the remote screen and input device, not supplying a Windows game to the PS5.

This procedure is useful when you want to play your PS5’s compatible games on a computer. It does not provide Windows-game support on the console.

- Check the computer. Sony’s current PC/Mac Remote Play requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 100 MB of available storage, 2 GB of RAM, a 1,024 × 768 or higher display, a sound card and a USB port.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Configure Rest Mode if you want remote wake-up. Open the PS5’s Rest Mode features and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Without those settings, a PS5 in Rest Mode may not be able to wake for a remote session.
- Install the official Remote Play app. Use Sony’s current Remote Play application for Windows. Sign in with the same PlayStation account that is used on the PS5.
- Connect a controller to the computer. Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers for PC/Mac Remote Play. Connect the supported controller to the computer with a USB cable before starting the session.
- Start the connection. Open the app, choose the PS5 shown for your account and follow the on-screen connection steps. The console supplies the game session; the computer receives the picture and sends your controller input back.
Remote Play bandwidth and latency
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download as the baseline for a high-speed connection and at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. Those figures are recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality or responsiveness. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, distance from the router, upload capacity, packet loss and network latency can still cause blur, stutter or delayed controls.
For a more consistent session, connect the PS5 or computer to the router by Ethernet where practical, avoid heavy uploads on the same connection and test the connection at the location where you will play. A faster internet plan cannot by itself fix local wireless interference or a congested home network.

Input and game limitations
Some games that support hardware keyboards can accept keyboard input from a Windows PC or Mac during Remote Play. That is still keyboard input into the PlayStation game session; it does not expose Windows to the PS5 and does not allow a Windows executable to run.
Sony says games requiring a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond the listed controllers are not compatible with this Remote Play setup. Games that must be streamed using PlayStation Plus Premium are also excluded from Remote Play according to Sony’s support guidance. Compatibility therefore depends on the individual PlayStation game and its peripherals.
What PlayStation cloud streaming does—and does not—offer
Cloud streaming is a separate PlayStation service. With PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony streams selected PS5 games from its cloud catalog or selected digital PS5 library to supported devices. Eligible content includes selected titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected digital PS5 games. It is not a general-purpose Windows cloud PC and it does not accept arbitrary Steam, Epic or other Windows installers.

Sony lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a cloud-streaming session and publishes additional resolution-specific recommendations on its product information. Availability varies by game, region, account and date. Catalogs change, and a title being available on PC does not make it eligible for PlayStation cloud streaming.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn a November 5, 2025 announcement, Sony described two separate experiences on PlayStation Portal: the Remote Play tab connects to a paired PS5 and plays games installed on that console, while cloud streaming gives Premium members access to a selection of compatible PS5 games without waiting for downloads. Sony explicitly states that the cloud list is selective and that availability varies. Neither mode runs a Windows build on a PS5.

Which option fits your goal?
| Your goal | Use | Why | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run a game’s Windows installer or Steam version | A compatible Windows gaming PC or other compatible PC platform | The PC operating system and hardware are designed for the Windows build. | Check the title’s own requirements; no individual game compatibility is established here. |
| Play your PS5 games from a Windows laptop or desktop | PS Remote Play | The PS5 renders the game and streams the console screen to the computer. | Requires the app, account, enabled console, USB controller and network; VR and some peripheral-dependent games are excluded. |
| Play selected PlayStation games without downloading them | PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | Sony’s servers stream eligible PlayStation catalog titles. | Requires Premium, broadband and an eligible title in a supported region; catalogs change. |
| Play a PC game on a television | A PC connected to the television or a compatible PC-streaming arrangement | The PC remains the device executing the Windows game. | This is not a PS5 feature, and third-party methods were not established by Sony’s cited documentation. |
Why a controller, capture card or adapter will not solve Windows compatibility
A controller only sends input. In Remote Play, it sends that input through the computer to a PlayStation game. A capture device can copy a video signal, but it does not convert a Windows executable into a PlayStation application or provide the PS5 with a Windows runtime. Adapters likewise cannot add an operating system and compatible game APIs to the console.
PlayStation Portal is designed for PlayStation Remote Play and selected PS5 cloud titles. It does not add Windows execution to the PS5, and buying one for that purpose would leave the original compatibility problem unchanged.

- “The Windows installer is on a USB drive, but the PS5 cannot open it.” A USB drive provides storage, not a Windows runtime. The PS5 does not support installing that PC executable as a game.
- “Remote Play opens, but my PC game is not visible on the PS5.” Remote Play discovers the PS5 and its PlayStation session. It does not browse or mirror Windows games from the computer to the console.
- “The game is in a cloud catalog on PC, so it should be in PlayStation cloud streaming.” Cloud libraries are platform-specific. Sony’s PlayStation service offers selected PlayStation titles, not every PC cloud game.
- “The connection works but controls feel delayed.” Check upload and download capacity, Wi-Fi congestion, packet loss and distance to the router. Sony’s 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation do not eliminate network latency.
- “A title is installed on my PS5 but Remote Play refuses to start it.” Check whether it requires a VR headset, an unsupported peripheral or PlayStation Plus Premium streaming. Sony identifies those categories as incompatible with the PC/Mac Remote Play setup.
What to verify before spending money
- Identify the exact build you own: Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 or cloud edition.
- Read the publisher’s platform and system-requirements page for that specific game.
- If it is a Windows build, budget for a compatible Windows PC rather than a PS5 accessory.
- If you want Remote Play, confirm the PS5 settings, account, controller, app version and network before buying additional hardware.
- If you want cloud streaming, check Sony’s current game finder, PlayStation Plus Premium requirement and local region eligibility. Do not assume that a title remains available indefinitely.
The practical answer in one sentence
A PS5 can run PlayStation games, stream its own compatible sessions to a Windows computer through Remote Play, and access selected PlayStation cloud titles with Premium; it cannot officially run arbitrary Windows game builds.
