Can You Run Windows Apps and Games on Linux? Compatibility Explained

Yes—many Windows programs and games run on Linux, but not through one universal switch. Regular Windows applications usually use Wine, while Windows games distributed through Steam commonly use Valve’s Proton and Steam Play. A native Linux edition is a different and usually preferable route. Compatibility is decided title by title and can change after an application update, a game patch, a driver change, a launcher change, or a publisher decision. Check the exact program, version, hardware and online-service requirements before moving important work or a multiplayer library to Linux.

What “running a Windows program on Linux” actually means

Linux cannot normally launch a Windows executable as if it were a native Linux application. Instead, you choose one of three paths:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Native Linux software: The developer publishes a Linux build. It uses Linux libraries and conventions directly and is normally the simplest option.
  • Wine: A compatibility layer that translates Windows application behavior for Linux and other POSIX-compliant systems. Wine is not a Windows virtual machine and does not install a complete copy of Windows.
  • Proton: Valve’s Steam-oriented compatibility tool for Windows games. Steam Play can make a Windows-only Steam game run on Linux, and Steam lets you select a compatibility tool for an individual title.

These routes are not interchangeable. Proton is designed around Steam games, not as a general replacement for Wine for desktop applications. Conversely, Wine’s broad application role does not mean that every game or every Windows program will work.

Will my Windows app work on Linux?

There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based only on an application’s name. The result depends on the exact release, installer, required Windows components, graphics features, copy protection, integrations and the Linux environment you use. A version that worked last year may need different configuration after an update, while a previously troublesome release may improve with newer Wine components.

Start with the exact application and version

Write down the product name, edition and version before checking compatibility. “The accounting software” or “the latest design suite” is not specific enough: compatibility reports often apply to one release, installer or patch. Also identify whether the publisher offers a native Linux build. If it does, that build avoids the extra compatibility layer and should be your first choice unless a particular feature is missing.

Use WineHQ’s application database

For a regular Windows application, consult WineHQ’s application database. It contains user-submitted test results, tips and notes for individual programs. Read several recent reports rather than relying on a single rating. Look for the tested application version, Wine version, distribution, installation method and any features that did not work.

Database entries are evidence, not a guarantee. A report from a different release, an old Linux distribution or a different graphics stack may not describe your machine. Treat an entry as a starting point for a controlled test, especially if the software stores important data or handles business records.

Test without risking your working installation

Use a separate test environment or a disposable copy of the application when possible. Keep installers, license information and data backups available. Do not assume that a successful launch proves complete compatibility: printing, file associations, plug-ins, hardware devices, fonts, video playback, updates and cloud sign-in may still fail.

A practical workflow for Windows desktop applications

  1. Confirm the target: Record the exact application version, installer type and features you need.
  2. Check for a native Linux edition: Prefer the publisher’s Linux build when it provides the required capabilities.
  3. Read recent WineHQ reports: Compare reports for the same release and note required workarounds or missing functions.
  4. Match the environment: Check whether reports use your distribution family, desktop session, graphics hardware and processor architecture.
  5. Install in an isolated test setup: Keep the test separate from other Windows programs so that one application’s files or settings do not interfere with another’s.
  6. Exercise real tasks: Open representative files, use connected devices, print, export, update and sign in if those are part of your routine.
  7. Decide on a fallback: If a required feature fails, retain a supported Windows installation, use a remote Windows machine or choose a native alternative rather than forcing an unreliable setup.

This process distinguishes “the window opened” from “the application is dependable for my work.”

Can I play Windows games on Linux?

Often, yes. Valve’s Steam Play feature can potentially run Windows-only Steam games on Linux through Proton. Steam manages Proton as a per-game compatibility choice, so you can use a different tool for one title without changing every game in your library.

Check the game before installing

Begin with the game’s Steam page and support information. Confirm the supported operating systems and the game’s hardware requirements; Valve specifically advises checking hardware requirements in addition to the listed operating system. A game may be compatible with Proton yet still run poorly if your graphics processor, memory, storage or processor does not meet its requirements.

For Steam Deck or another SteamOS device, consult Valve’s SteamOS Verified information. Verified status is a useful platform-specific signal, but it is not a promise that every future patch, downloadable-content package or external service will behave identically.

Select a compatibility tool for one game

  1. Open the game’s properties in Steam.
  2. Go to the compatibility settings for that title.
  3. Enable the option to force a particular Steam Play compatibility tool when the game requires it.
  4. Select an available Proton tool, then launch the game and test the features you actually use.
  5. If a game update changes behavior, return to the same settings and recheck the current reports and publisher guidance.

The exact labels can vary slightly as Steam’s interface changes, but the important control is per-game compatibility selection rather than a system-wide promise.

Does Proton work with every game?

No. Proton improves the odds for many Steam games, but Valve describes Steam Play as potential support, not universal support. Several title-specific dependencies can override an otherwise good result.

Anti-cheat systems

Competitive multiplayer games may use anti-cheat software that needs explicit Linux or Proton support. A game can start successfully and still block online play if its anti-cheat service rejects the environment. Support can also differ between a game’s single-player and multiplayer modes. Verify the current position from the game publisher or developer before changing operating systems for a competitive title.

Launchers, digital rights management and updates

Some games add a separate launcher, account check, digital-rights component or copy-protection layer. Each extra component introduces another compatibility point. A launcher update can break a previously working game, and a game patch can change required launch options or dependencies. Check the game’s current community and publisher information instead of treating an old success report as permanent.

  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Hardware and graphics drivers

Proton does not remove hardware requirements. Graphics-heavy games still need a suitable graphics processor, working Linux drivers, enough memory and adequate storage. Performance and stability can differ between driver versions and between graphics hardware vendors. A compatible game that fails to reach its required frame rate is not a practical success for your use case.

Wine and Proton compared

Question Wine Proton
Primary purpose General Windows application compatibility on Linux and other POSIX-compliant systems. Windows game compatibility within Valve’s Steam Play ecosystem.
Typical setup Application-specific installation and configuration, guided by WineHQ reports and user tips. Selected for an individual Steam game through Steam’s compatibility settings.
Best evidence to consult Recent WineHQ application-database reports for the exact program and version. Current Steam game information, SteamOS Verified details where relevant, and publisher guidance.
Main constraints Missing Windows components, application updates, hardware integrations and program-specific configuration. Hardware requirements, launchers, DRM, anti-cheat, game patches and publisher support.
Scope Desktop applications and some games, with results varying by title. Steam-distributed games; it should not be treated as a universal desktop-app solution.

The comparison is about intended use, not a quality ranking. The right tool is the one that matches the software you need and has current evidence for your environment.

What Steam Deck and SteamOS change

Steam Deck uses Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS and relies on Proton for broad support of the Steam library. That design lets a handheld run many games that do not have native Linux builds. Valve’s Verified information helps indicate how a game behaves on SteamOS, including whether controls, text readability and basic playability meet Valve’s criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verified status still has boundaries. It describes a particular SteamOS experience at the time of evaluation, not every game mode, third-party launcher or future update. Check the game’s hardware needs and current compatibility information before buying a device for one specific title. A game marked playable rather than Verified may work with adjustments, while a title without a favorable status may require more troubleshooting or may not support online play.

Common failure patterns and what to do

The installer opens, but the program will not start

  • Recheck the application’s exact version and the WineHQ reports for that release.
  • Look for a required Windows component, launcher or configuration step mentioned in recent reports.
  • Test a clean, isolated installation rather than layering changes onto a failed setup.

The program starts but an important feature is missing

  • Test the specific feature—printing, hardware access, plug-ins, file conversion or sign-in—instead of relying on the main window appearing.
  • Search reports for that feature and version, not only the product name.
  • Use a native Linux edition or supported Windows environment if the missing feature is essential.

A Steam game worked until an update

  • Check the game’s latest announcements and support discussions for a known regression.
  • Review the per-game Proton selection and test the tool recommended for the current release.
  • Check whether a launcher or anti-cheat component changed at the same time.

The game runs offline but multiplayer is blocked

Assume the online service, anti-cheat configuration or publisher policy is decisive. Confirm current support from the publisher before investing time in workarounds. Do not infer multiplayer support from successful local play.

How to decide whether Linux is suitable for your software

Make a list of must-have programs and games rather than judging Linux by an average compatibility claim. Mark each item as native Linux, verified through recent Wine reports, supported through Steam Play, uncertain or unsuitable. Give priority to the applications that handle your work, devices or collaboration, and to multiplayer games whose servers enforce publisher-specific checks.

  • Choose Linux confidently: Your essential tools have native builds or strong, recent compatibility evidence, and your hardware meets the requirements.
  • Use a dual-boot or separate Windows system: One or two essential programs lack dependable Linux support but do not need to run continuously.
  • Keep Windows available: A required application, device workflow, competitive game or publisher service is unsupported or too volatile to trust.

Recheck compatibility near the time you install or migrate. Wine and Proton improve over time, but application updates, game patches, drivers and publisher decisions can change the result in either direction.

The bottom line on Windows compatibility

Linux can run a substantial range of Windows applications and games, but compatibility is a per-title decision. Use Wine and its application-specific reports for ordinary Windows software; use Proton and Steam Play for Steam games; prefer a native Linux build whenever one meets your needs. Check both software compatibility and hardware requirements, and verify anti-cheat, launcher and publisher support for any multiplayer game. That evidence-based check is more reliable than assuming that a Windows label alone predicts success.
