Can You Run Two Servers in the US and Europe Under One Domain?

Yes. One public domain can serve applications from separate US and European servers. Put a global routing layer in front of both origins—usually a managed layer-7 reverse proxy/CDN, or latency- and health-aware DNS—then configure HTTPS, health checks, routing policy, and a data strategy that matches active-active or active-passive operation.

What “one domain” actually means

A domain name is an addressing layer, not a promise that only one machine exists behind it. Your domain can resolve to a global edge service, which then selects a healthy US or European origin, or it can resolve through DNS to one regional endpoint at a time. Visitors continue to use the same hostname, such as app.example.com, while the infrastructure behind that hostname changes by geography, latency, health, or policy.

The important distinction is between the routing layer and the origin servers:

  • Routing layer: A reverse proxy, CDN, or DNS policy decides where a request should go.
  • Origins: The US and European servers process the request and access application data.
  • Control plane: Certificates, health probes, traffic weights, failover rules, and monitoring determine whether each origin receives traffic.

Simply adding two ordinary A records does not create intelligent regional routing. Standard DNS round-robin may hand out either address without considering user location, server health, connection persistence, or application readiness.

Choose the routing architecture

Managed global reverse proxy or CDN

A managed layer-7 service provides one global entry point. It accepts the browser’s HTTPS connection at a nearby point of presence, terminates TLS for your custom domain, and forwards the request to a selected origin. Azure Front Door documentation describes this model as a cloud-based layer-7 load balancer that distributes traffic across regions and endpoints. Origins can be in different zones or regions and can also be outside the provider’s cloud if they are publicly reachable.

This approach is usually the easiest operational choice when you need several features in one place:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Custom-domain certificate management and HTTPS termination.
  • Health-based origin selection and automatic failover.
  • Path-based rules, such as sending /api to one origin pool and /static to another.
  • Edge caching for cacheable assets and responses.
  • A web application firewall and centralized request logging.
  • Origin shielding, so you can restrict direct access to the regional servers.

CloudFront can be placed behind a Route 53 alias, with users automatically sent to the CloudFront edge location that offers the lowest latency. Cloudflare’s Anycast edge similarly directs end-user requests toward a nearby data center; its Tunnel service can publish a hostname, and multiple cloudflared replicas on one tunnel UUID provide basic connector redundancy.

A reverse proxy adds another network hop between the edge and origin, but that hop is normally intentional: the edge handles connection setup close to the user and applies routing, security, and caching before contacting a region.

Latency- or geolocation-aware DNS

With DNS routing, the domain points to a DNS provider that maintains separate records for the US and Europe. A latency policy returns the endpoint that is expected to respond fastest to the DNS query’s origin. A geolocation policy instead follows an explicit country or continent mapping. Route 53 latency-based routing returns the lowest-latency endpoint for the resolver’s location; when health checks are enabled and that endpoint is unhealthy, it returns the next-lowest-latency healthy endpoint.

DNS routing lets clients connect directly to a regional server. That can reduce proxy-layer features and cost, but it also exposes the origin addresses unless you add another protection layer. DNS answers are cached by recursive resolvers, operating systems, browsers, and sometimes applications. Consequently, a routing change cannot instantly reach every client even when the authoritative provider changes the record.

Azure describes Traffic Manager as a DNS-based load balancer and contrasts it with Front Door, which terminates connections at nearby points of presence before connecting to an origin. That difference matters for long-lived connections, TLS policy, WAF placement, and failover expectations.

Architecture comparison

Characteristic Global reverse proxy/CDN Latency or geolocation DNS
Client connection Terminates at an edge point of presence, then the edge connects to an origin Client connects directly to the selected regional endpoint
Routing scope HTTP-aware: host, path, headers, cookies, weights, and origin health DNS-answer selection; generally unaware of HTTP request details
Failover behavior Can stop sending new requests to an unhealthy origin after probe detection Depends on health checks, DNS TTL, resolver caching, and client cache behavior
TLS and certificates Centralized certificate at the global entry point; origin TLS is separately configurable Each regional endpoint must correctly serve the hostname and certificate unless another TLS layer is used
WAF and caching Commonly available at the edge Not provided by DNS itself; add separate services or configure each origin
Origin exposure Origins can often be firewalled to accept traffic only from the edge Public endpoint addresses are returned or discoverable to clients
Protocol fit Excellent for HTTP and HTTPS; support for WebSockets, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, gRPC, or raw TCP varies by service Works for any protocol the selected endpoint supports, but DNS cannot inspect or steer individual requests
Session handling May offer affinity, but application-level shared state is still preferable Subsequent DNS resolutions can select a different region; local-memory sessions are fragile
Operational model More centralized controls and features, with provider-specific configuration Simpler data path, but more responsibility for certificates, security, and origin behavior

Configure the two-region setup

  1. Create stable regional endpoints. Deploy the US and European servers with fixed public IPs or stable hostnames. Keep each region independently reachable for health probes and administrative checks. Record which application version and data dependencies are active in each location.
  2. Select the global entry point. Choose a managed reverse proxy/CDN when you need edge TLS, WAF, caching, path rules, or fast request-level failover. Choose latency- or geolocation-aware DNS when direct client-to-origin connections are acceptable and DNS-based failover is sufficient.
  3. Attach the custom hostname. Add the domain or subdomain to the routing service and publish the required DNS record. For an edge service this is commonly an alias or CNAME-style mapping; for DNS routing, create separate regional records under the provider’s latency, geolocation, weighted, or failover policy.
  4. Install and validate certificates. Terminate HTTPS at the global entry point, and use HTTPS from the edge to each origin where supported. Confirm that the origin accepts the expected host name or SNI value and presents a valid certificate. A certificate that works in the US but not Europe will look like a regional outage.
  5. Preserve the host header and routing context. Configure forwarding so the application receives the intended host name, protocol information, and client-IP headers. If an origin uses virtual hosts, bind the custom domain there as well; otherwise it may return a default site or a 404.
  6. Publish a real health endpoint. Expose a lightweight HTTPS endpoint such as /health. It should verify the components required to serve production traffic—application process, required database connection, queue or cache dependency, and acceptable readiness state—not merely whether a TCP port is open. Azure recommends health probes and notes that HEAD probes can reduce origin load.
  7. Set the routing policy. Use performance or latency routing to favor the faster region, weighted routing for a controlled percentage split, priority routing for primary/standby, or explicit geography when a user must remain in a particular jurisdiction. Document the policy so an on-call engineer knows which result is expected.
  8. Protect the origins. Restrict inbound traffic to the proxy’s published ranges when possible, require authenticated administrative access, and prevent users from bypassing the edge to reach an unprotected server. With DNS-direct routing, apply equivalent firewall, rate-limit, and WAF controls at both origins.
  9. Test before directing all traffic. Use a staging hostname or a small weighted percentage. Check DNS answers from US and European recursive resolvers, inspect the selected origin in logs, verify redirects and cookies, and test both IPv4 and IPv6 if you publish them.

Decide between active-active and active-passive

Active-active

In an active-active design, both regions serve production requests at the same time. This uses capacity efficiently and can reduce latency for users on both continents, but it makes the data layer the hard part. Concurrent writes must be safe, conflict resolution must be explicit, and a request that begins in one region must be able to read the state it needs from the other.

  • Use a database or replication design that tolerates the chosen write pattern.
  • Define what happens when the same record is changed in both regions.
  • Keep session state in a shared, replicated store, or use stateless signed tokens with carefully managed key rotation.
  • Make background jobs idempotent so a retry in the second region cannot perform an operation twice.
  • Plan cache invalidation across both regions; an edge cache can otherwise serve stale content after a write.

Active-passive

In active-passive operation, one region receives normal traffic while the other is warm, synchronized, and ready to take over. This model wastes some capacity, but it simplifies single-writer databases, migrations, and operational reasoning. Failover includes a recovery transition: promote or unlock the standby data layer, switch routing, warm caches, and confirm that background workers do not run twice.

Priority routing is a natural fit for active-passive. Keep the standby health endpoint intentionally meaningful: a machine that is powered on but lacks current data or required secrets should not be advertised as ready.

Make health checks reflect user-visible readiness

A probe that returns HTTP 200 while the application cannot query its database gives the routing layer false confidence. Separate shallow liveness from production readiness when necessary:

  • Liveness: confirms the process is running and can answer a request.
  • Readiness: confirms the dependencies and configuration required for the selected traffic class are usable.
  • Degraded state: can return an unhealthy result when serving the region would cause errors, even if the host itself is online.

Probe frequently enough to detect failure within your recovery objective, but not so aggressively that health traffic overloads the origins. Validate probe status codes, redirect behavior, TLS negotiation, authentication requirements, and the exact path or method used. Cloudflare Health Checks documentation says checks can be run from one to thirteen selected regions, with three data centers in each selected region (Cloudflare, 2026). Selecting multiple monitoring regions reduces the chance that a single probe location hides a regional network failure.

Understand failover timing

There is no universal failover time for a two-continent deployment. A reverse proxy can stop assigning new requests after its health detector marks an origin unhealthy, but existing connections may continue until they close or time out. DNS failover additionally depends on the authoritative provider’s detection interval, the record’s TTL, recursive-resolver behavior, client caching, and whether applications honor DNS changes promptly.

Shortening a TTL can reduce the intended caching window, but it does not force every resolver or application to discard an answer immediately. For critical services, test the actual recovery path rather than promising a number based only on the configured TTL.

Design for partial failure: a server can have a healthy network port while its database, deployment, certificate, or outbound dependency is broken. Monitor edge responses and origin responses separately so you can distinguish routing failure from application failure.

Sessions, cookies, and long-lived connections

Local in-memory sessions create a hidden dependency on one region. A user may authenticate in the US and then be sent to Europe, where the session does not exist. Prefer a shared session store, stateless tokens, or deliberate affinity with a documented failure trade-off. Affinity can keep a user on one origin during normal operation, but it cannot replace replicated state when that origin fails.

Review WebSockets, server-sent events, streaming responses, gRPC, and other long-lived connections against the selected routing service. A new request can fail over cleanly; an already-open connection generally must reconnect. Ensure the client has retry and backoff logic and that reconnecting does not duplicate a write.

Testing and monitoring checklist

  • Resolve the hostname from several US and European networks and record the returned endpoint, TTL, and address family.
  • Send requests with a trace identifier and confirm which origin handled each request in application logs.
  • Stop the application—not only the web server—and verify that readiness changes and traffic moves as intended.
  • Simulate a database outage, expired certificate, firewall block, and deployment rollback independently.
  • Test health probes from more than one geography. A single monitoring location can miss a regional failure.
  • Measure edge latency, origin latency, 4xx and 5xx rates, connection failures, cache hit ratio, certificate expiry, health status, and DNS changes.
  • Exercise recovery: restore the failed region, confirm data convergence, remove temporary routing overrides, and verify that traffic distribution returns to policy.
  • Keep a written manual-failover procedure and a rollback path for routing-rule changes.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Using two plain A records as “global load balancing”

Resolvers may return either address without regard to geography or health, and clients can remain pinned to a failed address. Replace round-robin records with a health-aware routing policy or a global reverse proxy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking only whether port 443 is open

An open port does not prove that the application can serve a request. Probe an endpoint that represents production readiness and include critical dependencies.

Replicating servers but not state

Identical code does not make databases, sessions, queues, uploaded files, or caches identical. Choose shared storage, replication, or an explicit partitioning model before enabling active-active traffic.

Leaving certificates or host bindings regional

Every path that terminates TLS must have the correct certificate and hostname binding. Test both origins directly through the routing layer before a failover event.

Assuming DNS changes are immediate

TTL is only one part of caching. Resolver and client behavior can extend the period during which users reach an old endpoint. Use an edge proxy when request-level failover speed is more important than direct-origin simplicity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failing to test from multiple geographies

A probe or synthetic test in one location cannot reveal every transit, ISP, or regional outage. Use geographically distributed checks and compare edge and origin telemetry.

Which design fits your application?

Requirement Better starting point Reason
Central TLS, WAF, caching, and HTTP path rules Managed reverse proxy/CDN These controls operate naturally at an application-aware edge.
Direct client connections and simple regional endpoints Latency- or geolocation-aware DNS DNS selects an origin without inserting an HTTP proxy.
Fast request-level failover Managed reverse proxy/CDN New requests can be redirected without waiting for every DNS cache to expire.
One safe database writer Active-passive with priority failover A standby region avoids concurrent-write conflicts.
Both regions must serve traffic Active-active plus replicated or partitioned data Routing is straightforward only after consistency and session behavior are defined.
Non-HTTP protocols DNS or a protocol-capable global load balancer HTTP reverse proxies may not support every protocol or connection pattern.

Provider choice, exact failover timing, and database topology cannot be determined without your traffic distribution, compliance requirements, consistency model, protocol needs, and budget. The durable design principle is independent of provider: keep one stable public hostname, put health-aware routing in front of both regions, and make application state resilient to a request arriving on either continent.
