Yes. You can install several Linux desktop environments on the same operating-system installation, then choose which one to start from your display manager’s session menu at login. The environments share the kernel, users, files and installed applications, while each supplies its own desktop shell, settings tools, themes and default programs. You do not need a separate partition or a second Linux installation for each desktop.
The practical limits are package conflicts, disk use, duplicate applications and different configuration defaults. Debian explicitly supports installing multiple desktops but warns that some combinations are not co-installable. Fedora offers GNOME Workstation alongside official variants and Spins for KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, Sway, Budgie and other desktops.

What “multiple desktops on one installation” actually means
A desktop environment is not a separate operating system. It is a coordinated set of packages: a graphical shell, window manager or compositor, panels, menus, settings tools, file manager, themes, session files and supporting services. Installing another environment adds those packages to the same system.
At login, the display manager reads the session entries installed by those packages. Its session or gear menu then lists desktops and, where applicable, window-manager sessions. Select one before entering your password and that environment becomes the desktop for the new session. Most display managers also let you remember the choice as the default for future logins.

Only the selected session is started as your main graphical shell. Installing GNOME, Plasma and Xfce does not mean that three complete desktops are rendered simultaneously. Their files remain installed and consume storage, but the active session determines which shell, panel, settings daemon and desktop services run.

The Debian installer documentation includes an explicit warning: “some combinations of desktop may not be co-installable.” Treat that as a compatibility check, not as a reason to assume every pair will work together. A desktop may install successfully yet still need adjustments to defaults, themes, portals, file associations or background services.
Installing more than one desktop on Debian
Choose several during installation
When running the Debian installer, select the desktop task and the individual desktop choices you want. The installer can place more than one supported environment on the new system. This is the cleanest approach when you already know that you need a multi-desktop machine, because the installer resolves the initial package set together.

- Open Debian’s software or package-management tool and identify the desktop task, package group or meta-package for the environment you want.
- Review the package list before confirming. A desktop task can pull in a window manager, display-manager integration, utilities, themes, a file manager and default applications in addition to the shell itself.
- Allow the package manager to resolve dependencies and finish without interrupting the transaction. If it reports that a combination cannot be installed, do not force removal of existing desktop packages; choose a compatible alternative or keep the current setup.
- Log out or reboot after installation so the display manager reloads its session entries.
- At the login screen, open the session or gear menu, select the newly installed desktop, and then sign in. The choice normally applies to that session and can usually be saved as the default.
Installing the package only makes the environment available. Debian’s documentation stresses that you still need to set up your user session before you can run it, which in normal use means selecting the session at the display manager.

Adding alternatives on Fedora
Fedora’s standard Workstation edition uses GNOME. Fedora also publishes official variants and Spins centered on KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, Sway, Budgie and other environments. Those editions are useful when you want a distribution-maintained desktop with its own defaults and testing.
On an existing Fedora installation, use Fedora’s package-management or software interface to find the desktop environment or environment group, inspect the proposed dependencies, and install it. Exact package names and available groups can change between Fedora releases, so use the package labels shown for your release rather than copying a command intended for another version.
After the transaction completes, sign out and use the display manager’s session menu to select the new environment. If no new session appears, restart the display manager or reboot, then verify that the desktop’s session package was installed. Do not remove GNOME merely because you installed another Fedora desktop; Workstation components may still be shared by applications and recovery tools.

- Log out of the current graphical session. Switching from inside a running desktop is less predictable than starting a fresh session.
- At the display-manager login screen, locate the session, gear or desktop icon. Its position and wording vary by display manager and distribution.
- Select the environment you want, such as GNOME, Plasma or Xfce.
- Authenticate and start the session.
- If the display manager offers a “remember” or default option, enable it only after testing the environment. Otherwise leave the choice temporary so you can compare sessions safely.
The active session is the one selected at login. You can return to the previous desktop by logging out and choosing its entry again; no reinstall is required.

What changes when several desktops are installed?
Storage and package footprint
Each environment adds packages, translations, themes, icons, settings utilities and often a second set of everyday applications. Installed files remain on disk even when another desktop is active. A lightweight desktop generally has a smaller footprint than a full workstation shell, but the actual size depends on the distribution’s task and optional packages.
Duplicate applications
Multiple tasks may install more than one file manager, terminal, image viewer, text editor or archive tool. This is normal, but it can clutter application menus. You can set preferred applications in the desktop’s settings, yet another environment may use its own defaults when you switch sessions.
Shared defaults and configuration files
Some settings are shared through common configuration locations, while others are desktop-specific. File associations, notification behavior, theme selection, fonts, proxy settings and default handlers can therefore appear to change when you move between sessions. Keep personal configuration backups if you are experimenting, and avoid copying an entire configuration directory from one desktop into another.
Wayland and X11 sessions
Desktop packages may provide Wayland sessions, X11 sessions, or both, depending on the distribution release and hardware support. Treat these as separate entries when they appear in the login menu. A graphics driver, screen-reader setup, remote-desktop tool or older application may work better in one display protocol than the other.

Background services and resource use
The desktop you are using starts its own shell and services. Installing another desktop does not normally start all of its services at once, but shared daemons, indexing tools, portals and applets can still be present. If battery life, memory or startup time matters, compare a clean login to each session rather than judging from the package count alone.

Do not assume every pair is co-installable
Debian’s warning about non-co-installable combinations is important. Conflicts can involve mutually exclusive packages, display-manager choices, session files or overlapping configuration tools. Read the package manager’s proposed changes. If it wants to remove your current desktop or a large set of shared packages, cancel and investigate before proceeding.
Keep the original desktop until the replacement is proven
A desktop meta-package is often a dependency convenience rather than the only code that makes the session work. Removing it can trigger removal of packages that other environments or applications still need. Test the new session through several logins before considering cleanup, and retain at least one known-good desktop and its core packages.
Use separate test users when settings collide
A new user account provides a clean home directory and helps distinguish a package problem from a personal configuration problem. If the new desktop works for the test user but not your main account, reset or move only the desktop-specific configuration identified by the distribution’s documentation instead of deleting all hidden files.
Troubleshooting common problems
The new desktop is not listed
- Log out fully and reboot so the display manager rereads session files.
- Confirm that the desktop’s session package, not just one application from that desktop, was installed.
- Check whether the display manager is showing a filtered list; some menus hide sessions until the icon or gear is opened.
- Verify that the package transaction completed without unresolved dependencies.
The login returns to the greeter
- Choose the previous working desktop to confirm that the display manager itself still functions.
- Try the new desktop with a fresh test user; a corrupted per-user configuration can prevent one account from starting.
- Use the distribution’s logs and recovery documentation to identify a graphics-driver, compositor or session-script failure before removing packages.
Applications or file associations changed
Set preferred applications inside the desktop that you are currently using. Remember that another environment may apply its own defaults the next time you log in. Installing several file managers does not damage your files; it changes which program opens them by default.
The system proposes removing the old desktop
Stop the transaction. Review the proposed removals and keep the original desktop until the new one has been tested. If the two environments genuinely cannot coexist on that release, use a separate installation or a virtual machine rather than forcing an unsupported package state.
When one installation is the right choice
- Choose one installation with several sessions when you want to compare desktops, support different users’ preferences, or keep a familiar fallback while learning a new environment.
- Use separate installations when package conflicts prevent co-installation, when you need completely isolated configurations, or when each desktop must have different system-level drivers and services.
- Use a virtual machine or a live session when you only need a short evaluation and do not want additional packages and defaults on your primary system.
Before installing, decide whether you need a full second desktop or only a different window manager. A window manager session can be much smaller, while a complete environment brings its own settings stack and applications.

- Back up important personal data and record the currently working desktop.
- Check the distribution release notes and package manager for co-installation warnings.
- Install one additional environment at a time.
- Read proposed removals and dependency changes before confirming.
- Reboot, select the new session at the display manager, and test networking, graphics, sound, suspend, external displays and your essential applications.
- Test with a separate user if your main account behaves oddly.
- Keep the original desktop until the new one is reliable.
- Only then remove unused packages, and review the removal list so shared components are not deleted accidentally.
The bottom line
Multiple Linux desktop environments can coexist on one installation. Install the additional desktop packages, select its session from the display manager at login, and switch back whenever you want. Debian documents this workflow directly, and Fedora supplies a broad set of official desktop variants. The trade-off is not whether Linux can do it, but whether the particular desktop combination on your distribution release is compatible and worth the extra packages, duplicate applications and configuration choices.
