No. ChromeOS Flex is not supported on Apple Silicon Macs. Google’s installation requirements call for an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible computer, while Apple Silicon processors use the ARM architecture. Google’s known-issues guidance specifically lists Macs with an M1 processor as unsupported and warns that they may have major bugs even if they appear to work. The same architecture requirement applies to later Apple Silicon generations.
You may find reports of experimental boots, but a successful boot would not make the Mac a supported, reliable ChromeOS Flex computer. If your goal is to use Flex, choose a currently supported x86-64 computer and verify its exact model and certification status first.

Why Apple Silicon is outside ChromeOS Flex’s supported hardware
ChromeOS Flex is built for conventional PC hardware using the x86-64 instruction set. Google’s preparation guidance specifies an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible device as the minimum processor architecture. Apple Silicon Macs use Apple’s ARM-based system-on-chip architecture instead.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That difference is not a minor driver problem. The operating system, boot process, firmware interfaces and hardware support must all match the processor platform. An installer USB can carry ChromeOS Flex to a computer, but it cannot translate an ARM Mac into an x86-64 machine. As a result, an M-series Mac falls outside Google’s supported target hardware before memory, storage or USB settings are considered.

- FAT32 pre-formatted for broad compatibility: These drives work with Windows (XP through 11), macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Smart TVs, Car Stereos, and USB-enabled printers without requiring drivers or software installation. For files larger than 4GB, reformat to exFAT using the built-in format utility on your computer.
- 31 labels included – pre-printed and blank: Each pack contains 19 pre-printed color-coded labels and 12 blank white labels for organizing drives by project, department, person, or event category. Labels attach directly to each drive for quick identification during multi-user distributions.
What the architecture requirement means in practice
- Supported architecture: Intel or AMD x86-64.
- Unsupported architecture: ARM, including Apple Silicon systems.
- Apple Silicon examples: Macs with M1, M2, M3 or M4-family processors.
- Result: ChromeOS Flex installation on an Apple Silicon Mac is an unsupported experiment, not an approved deployment.
Google’s ChromeOS Flex Help known-issues page states: “Only x86_64 architecture devices can run ChromeOS Flex. 32-bit x86 and ARM devices are not supported.” That statement is the decisive answer for Apple Silicon.
Google’s explicit warning about M1 Macs
Google goes further than the general architecture rule. Its known-issues guidance says: “Mac devices with Touch Bar, T2 security chip, or M1 processor are unsupported and likely to have major bugs even if they work.” This warning matters because it addresses the situation in which an unsupported Mac appears to boot or reaches part of the setup process.
“Even if they work” does not mean Google considers the installation usable. It means that an anecdotal boot does not provide a performance, stability or update guarantee. A machine could fail at installation, lose hardware functions, behave unpredictably after an update or offer no supported recovery path. Google also says that ChromeOS Flex does not support most newer Mac models.

Older Intel Macs are a different case
Some Intel Macs appeared on Google’s certified-model list. Those entries do not establish compatibility for Apple Silicon. Certification applies to the exact computer model and its hardware configuration, not to the Mac brand or to every computer with a similar name.

The certified-model list was marked “last updated September 2, 2026.” The older Mac entries and the end years shown in that list include:
| Mac model entry | Status or end year shown in the list | What it means for an Apple Silicon owner |
|---|---|---|
| Mac Mini 7,1 | Certification ending in 2026 | Historical Intel-era certification; it does not cover an M-series Mac mini. |
| MacBook Air 6,1 | Certification ending in 2026 | Applies only to that exact older model entry. |
| MacBook Air 7,2 | Certification ending in 2027 | Still an older Intel model, not an Apple Silicon equivalent. |
| MacBook Pro 11,2 | Listed among entries ending in 2025 | Past certification does not imply current support. |
| MacBook Pro 9,2 | Listed among entries ending in 2025 | Past certification does not imply current support. |
Google says an expired model is removed from ongoing testing, is no longer eligible for Google support and is not guaranteed to receive future updates. Therefore, even an Intel Mac that once appeared on the list needs a fresh check of its current status and end date before you erase its drive.
How to check a computer before installing ChromeOS Flex
If you have an older Intel Mac or a non-Mac PC, use this checklist. It is not a route around Apple Silicon; it is the process for finding a genuinely compatible target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Identify the exact model
Record the model name and identifier rather than relying on a marketing description such as “2015 MacBook Pro.” Similar-looking variants can use different chipsets, wireless hardware or storage controllers. Compare the exact identifier with Google’s current certified-model list.

2. Check current certification and the end date
A model’s appearance in an archived list is not enough. Certification is time-sensitive. Google recommends checking the live list for the model’s current status and certification end date. If the date has passed, Google no longer guarantees ongoing testing, support or future updates for that device.
3. Confirm the basic hardware minimums
| Requirement | Google’s stated minimum | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible | Apple Silicon ARM systems fail this requirement. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | The minimum for the installation target; more memory can improve general multitasking but does not change certification. |
| Internal storage | 16 GB | The minimum internal capacity specified for ChromeOS Flex installation. |
| Boot method | Ability to boot from USB | The computer must allow external-media startup and any required firmware changes. |
| Permissions | Administrator access; BIOS access where applicable | Firmware and boot-order changes may require an administrator account or firmware password. |
4. Confirm USB installation conditions
Google’s installation preparation guidance calls for a USB drive of at least 8 GB. The computer used to create the installer can be different from the computer on which Flex will be installed. That distinction is useful if your target machine is an older Intel system, but it does not solve the processor mismatch on an Apple Silicon Mac.
- Use a USB drive meeting the 8 GB minimum.
- Create the ChromeOS Flex installation media using Google’s current preparation instructions.
- Start the compatible target from the USB device.
- Before replacing the existing operating system, verify the target’s exact model, certification status, storage and backup plan.
The USB drive is only installation media. It does not add x86-64 support, alter an Apple Silicon processor or make an unsupported Mac eligible for Google support.
What “unsupported” means for an experimental boot
Google distinguishes certified from non-certified devices. On certified models, Google guarantees functionality within the scope of its certification. On non-certified hardware, Google does not guarantee performance, functionality or stability.

- Durable Swivel Metal Cover: Features a 360° rotating metal cover designed to help protect the USB connector when not in use. The capless design prevents lost covers, and each drive is rigorously tested for reliable everyday performance
- Compact and Reliable for Everyday Carry: Lightweight memory stick with a built-in key ring hole for easy attachment to keychains, backpacks, briefcases, or lanyards, making it ideal for school, office, business, home, and travel
That distinction is especially important for Apple Silicon. An unsupported Mac might reach a boot screen through an unofficial method, but that result cannot be treated as evidence that the system is ready for daily use. Hardware that depends on proprietary firmware, custom power management, graphics support, wireless components or security hardware may not behave correctly. Google’s M1 warning specifically anticipates major bugs even when the operating system appears to run.
Risks to consider before testing any unsupported computer
- Data loss: Installing Flex can erase the internal drive, so a complete, independently verified backup is essential.
- Missing support: Google may not troubleshoot failures on a non-certified model.
- Uncertain updates: A workaround that boots once may stop working after a ChromeOS Flex update.
- Unreliable hardware: Graphics, audio, wireless networking, sleep, cameras, keyboards, trackpads or external displays may not function as expected.
- Recovery difficulty: Returning to macOS can require a separate recovery process and another computer or installer.
These are reasons to avoid treating an Apple Silicon installation as a dependable conversion, not merely reasons to expect a slower setup.
Does the M1 warning apply to M2, M3 and M4 Macs?
Google’s quoted warning names the M1 processor, while its broader rule excludes ARM devices. Apple Silicon Macs use ARM-based processors, so later M-series Macs also fall outside the x86-64 requirement. The absence of an M2, M3 or M4 entry in a particular warning does not create an exception. Always apply the architecture rule and check Google’s current documentation for any future change.
Practical alternatives
Keep macOS on the Apple Silicon Mac
If you need the Mac’s battery life, applications, peripherals and Apple hardware integration, keeping macOS avoids an unsupported operating-system replacement. You can still use Chrome as a browser without converting the computer to ChromeOS Flex.

Use ChromeOS Flex on a supported x86-64 computer
An Intel or AMD computer that meets the minimums and appears on the current certified list is the appropriate platform for experimentation or deployment. Verify the exact model and certification end date first, because certification can expire even when the hardware still boots.
Choose a ChromeOS device
If the real objective is a supported ChromeOS experience rather than reusing this particular Mac, a new ChromeOS device is a separate option. Google’s certification guidance recommends new ChromeOS devices or other currently certified models when a Flex computer reaches its certification end date. This does not install ChromeOS Flex on the Apple Silicon Mac; it changes the hardware platform to one designed for ChromeOS.
A decision checklist
- Does the computer use Intel or AMD x86-64? If it uses Apple Silicon ARM, stop: it is outside the supported architecture.
- Is the exact model on Google’s current certified list?
- Has its certification end date passed?
- Does it have at least 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage?
- Can it boot from an 8 GB-or-larger USB installer?
- Do you have administrator or firmware access and a verified backup?
- Are you prepared to operate without Google’s performance, functionality and stability guarantees if the model is non-certified?
For an Apple Silicon Mac, the first checklist item ends the evaluation: ARM is not a supported ChromeOS Flex architecture. For an older Intel Mac, all of the remaining checks still matter.
