Technically, yes: YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming, and an encoder can run on a cloud machine. But YouTube does not guarantee continuous 24/7 broadcasting or certify a particular Indian cloud provider. Whether you need GST registration is a separate question that cannot be answered from the streaming setup alone; it depends on your location, aggregate turnover, revenue and the applicable registration rules and exceptions.
Can an Indian cloud service keep a YouTube stream live 24/7?
A cloud-hosted encoder is one possible way to send a live stream to YouTube while your own computer is off. YouTube’s official guidance recognizes encoder-based streaming, but it does not certify cloud providers or promise that a particular service will stay live continuously. A 24/7 setup therefore depends on the provider’s actual capacity and recovery behavior as well as YouTube’s stream requirements.

YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder and console streaming methods. Its encoder workflow supports content such as gameplay, overlays, microphones and cameras; that does not mean every cloud virtual machine is suitable for every source or format. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview and encoder setup and settings guidance.
Check a cloud plan before relying on it
- Sustained capacity: Confirm the CPU, GPU or other resources can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec continuously—not just briefly.
- Network allowance and cost: Check outbound bandwidth, traffic limits or charges, and whether the plan’s total cost remains workable for an always-on stream.
- Region and network: Check the server location, connection stability and latency for your workflow.
- Recovery and monitoring: Find out what happens after an encoder process or machine fails, how restarts work, and whether you can monitor the stream and get support.
- YouTube compatibility: Confirm the setup can use the intended codec and RTMPS connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
These are evaluation criteria for a continuous workload, not verified performance findings about any particular Indian provider. Test with representative audio and motion before launch, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. Match encoder bitrate and capacity to the selected resolution and codec. For example, YouTube’s settings guidance lists recommended H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of the capacity a specific cloud plan needs.

Know YouTube’s limits and rules
YouTube’s live documentation states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. A continuous stream remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube reserves the right to restrict livestreaming. A cloud provider cannot remove those obligations or guarantee permission to broadcast.
Use content you have the rights to stream and check that your material complies with YouTube’s policies, including copyright rules. A 24/7 schedule does not itself establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization.

Does using cloud hosting mean you can avoid GST registration?
No general conclusion follows from the fact that your encoder runs on an Indian cloud service. Streaming feasibility and GST registration are separate issues. Registration depends on your own facts and the applicable GST provisions; the cloud provider’s location alone does not settle your position.

The Telangana State GST Department’s November 2025 handbook describes the general registration threshold as aggregate turnover of ₹20 lakh in a financial year, or ₹10 lakh in specified special-category states. Treat these amounts as orientation, not an individualized ruling: applicable provisions, compulsory-registration rules and exceptions must also be checked. The CBIC FAQ includes broad statements about registration, but it should be read alongside later notifications and the facts of your case.
Why the data-hosting export circular is not a creator exemption
CBIC Circular 232/26/2024-GST, dated 10 September 2024, addresses a specific transaction: data-hosting services supplied by a provider in India to an overseas cloud-computing entity. It says that supply can be considered an export of services if the other conditions in section 2(6) of the IGST Act are met. That conclusion concerns the provider-to-overseas-cloud-entity supply. It does not decide whether a creator’s YouTube receipts are exports, who the recipient is, whether a creator crosses a threshold, or whether a compulsory-registration rule applies.
Facts needed to assess your own registration position
- Your state or union territory and whether you operate as an individual, proprietorship or another entity.
- Your aggregate turnover across relevant supplies during the financial year, including supplies beyond the YouTube channel where applicable.
- Whether the stream is monetized, what payments you receive, who pays them and where that recipient is located.
- Whether you make other taxable supplies and whether a registration exception or compulsory-registration provision applies.
If any of these details are unknown—or if the amounts or rules are close to a threshold—your GST position remains unresolved. Ask a qualified Indian GST practitioner to apply the current rules to your specific facts. This is not a determination that you must register or that you are exempt.
