Yes—if you mean the original Final Fantasy (FFI), getting access to the airship lets you revisit previous areas. The important caveat is that the airship broadens overworld travel, but it does not land on every kind of terrain in every version.
What the airship lets you do in the original Final Fantasy
Square Enix says that gaining access to the airship opens up the world and gives players the freedom to revisit previous areas, as well as continue the story. In other words, you are not locked into moving only forward once the airship becomes available. Square Enix’s FFI feature describes this return-travel freedom.

How you get access to the airship
In FFI, the airship is buried on the overworld. You need the levistone to reach it; finding the airship is the prerequisite to using it, rather than a separate rule about which earlier areas you may revisit. Square Enix describes the buried airship and the levistone in its FFI overview and FFI feature.
NES landing restriction: look for open plains
If you are playing the NES version, the airship can land only on open plains. Nintendo’s manual advises watching the airship’s shadow to tell whether it can land, and states, “You can only land on open plains.” So you can travel broadly over the overworld, but you may need to land on suitable terrain and continue on foot to reach a nearby destination. This restriction is documented in the NES instruction manual; do not assume its wording describes every later version in exactly the same way.
#1 Best Overall
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
If you mean a different Final Fantasy
“Final Fantasy” can refer to the series, and airships do not work identically in every entry. For example, Square Enix says that in Final Fantasy XII, free travel around the world becomes available after obtaining a new skystone for the Strahl. That is a different unlock condition from simply treating every airship appearance as immediate, unrestricted return travel. The series variation is outlined in Square Enix’s airship feature.
The official information establishes that FFI allows revisiting previous areas, but it does not document every individual location or every possible story-state exception. If you meant another numbered game, its specific airship and travel rules determine the answer.
