Yes. Opening the side gate in Ancient Vault – Hunter does not lock you out or trap you in the vault. The gate only gives access to a button. Pressing that button is what activates one part of the optional three-switch puzzle. You can leave the room, return to the main hall, activate the other two switches, and open the central treasure door.
The Hunter-rescue objective is separate from this loot puzzle. You can continue to the Hunter’s chamber and rescue Athalan Skree, or return to the vault later to work on the switches and collect the chests. Current guides explain the puzzle route, but they do not explicitly guarantee that an opened gate or activated switch will remain active across every later session or multiplayer state.

The gated side room is easy to misread because the visible gate looks like the important interaction. It is not the treasure-door trigger by itself. Opening it simply lets you reach the button inside. The button is the object that contributes to the central door puzzle; the gate is access, not activation.
A 2026 Enshrouded Guide describes the distinction directly: the gate provides access to the button, while the button is the object that contributes to opening the treasure door. That means you can open the gate, press the button, and then move on without worrying that you have skipped a one-time opportunity.

After the button press, return to the vault’s main hall. The central barred door is controlled by three switches. When all three have registered, their runes light up and the central door opens. The side-room gate does not replace the other two switches, and opening it does not finish the puzzle.
The three-switch puzzle in Ancient Vault – Hunter
The optional treasure room uses three separate activations. They are spread around the vault so that you have to combine ordinary movement, a ranged attack and an upper grappling route.

The order is flexible in practical terms: the important requirement is that all three switches are activated. If you open the gate first, you have completed only the access step until you press the button. If you leave after one or two switches, the central door remains barred until the third has been registered.
Step-by-step route to the treasure chest
- Enter Ancient Vault – Hunter. Follow the vault route until you reach the main hall and can identify the central barred treasure door. Treat this room as your navigation reference point.
- Locate the gated side room. The gate blocks the room containing a button. Opening the gate is safe; it is not an irreversible choice and does not seal the vault behind you.
- Press the button inside. Walk into the newly accessible room and interact with the button. Do not stop at merely opening the gate. The button press is the activation that matters for the three-switch puzzle.
- Return to the main hall. Use the same route back. You can leave the side room before the remaining switches are complete and continue exploring the vault.
- Activate the pillar switch from range. Find the switch mounted on a pillar and use a ranged attack when you have a line of sight. If the shot is obstructed, reposition rather than assuming the switch is already active.
- Take the upper grapple route. Reach the elevated section with the vault’s grappling path and activate the final switch. This is the traversal-heavy part of the puzzle; it is distinct from the ranged pillar interaction.
- Check the three runes. Return to the central hall and look at the puzzle indicators. Three lit runes show that the game has registered all three switches.
- Enter the central chamber. Once the runes are lit, the central barred door opens. Go inside and loot the chest, including the gold chest identified behind the three-switch door.
You do not need to complete the three activations before leaving the vault. If your immediate goal is to progress the Hunter quest, you can move to the Hunter’s chamber first and deal with the optional door afterward.

Can you leave before all three switches are active?
Yes. The puzzle is designed as a return-to-hall sequence rather than a timed escape. Opening the side gate does not force you to finish the pillar and grapple switches in the same visit. You can explore, pursue the Hunter objective or exit the vault and come back to the central hall later.
The practical distinction is between unfinished and failed. With one or two switches active, the treasure door is simply unfinished. There is no indication in the available walkthroughs that leaving early permanently fails the puzzle. When you come back, inspect the runes and continue with whichever switch has not registered.

The Hunter rescue is a separate objective
Ancient Vault – Hunter contains the objective to find the Hunter, but the optional chest-door puzzle is not the rescue itself. The quest documentation separates “Find The Hunter” at Ancient Vault – Hunter from “Summon The Hunter” at your base.
Rescuing Athalan Skree
Continue through the vault to the Hunter’s chamber. Activate her Cinder Vessel there. That interaction completes the vault-side part of the rescue objective; it is not dependent on opening the central treasure door.

Summoning the Hunter at your base
After returning to base, use a Summoning Staff to summon the Hunter. This base step is separate from collecting the optional chest. You can therefore prioritize the rescue, return home to summon Athalan Skree, and make a later vault run focused on loot if that better fits your session.

What loot is worth revisiting for?
The vault is not only a quest corridor. ESO-UI’s location listing records a gold chest behind the three-switch door, along with additional silver and wooden chests elsewhere in Ancient Vault – Hunter. That makes a return trip worthwhile even after the Hunter has been rescued.
The gold chest is the specific reward tied to the central barred door. The other chests are positioned around the vault, so opening the central door is not the same as clearing every container. If you are doing a completionist run, map the side rooms and upper paths rather than leaving immediately after looting the gold chest.
Because chest contents and your personal inventory needs can differ, decide before entering whether the run is primarily for the Hunter, for the three-switch reward, or for a broad vault clear. That decision prevents unnecessary backtracking while still leaving the optional door available.

Persistence: what is confirmed and what is not
The available guides explain how to activate the switches and open the door during the run, but they do not explicitly promise that the gate, individual switches or opened treasure door persist across every later session. They also do not establish identical persistence behavior in every multiplayer state.

If you leave and return in a later session, check the actual state in the vault instead of assuming that an earlier gate or switch activation was saved.
This is a qualification about documentation, not a claim that the puzzle always resets. The guides simply do not state a universal cross-session or multiplayer rule, so neither outcome should be presented as guaranteed.
Troubleshooting when the door stays shut
The gate is open, but the puzzle shows no progress
Opening the gate is only the access step. Go inside and press the button. Then return to the hall and check whether one rune has lit. If you never interacted with the button, the gate alone has not counted as a switch activation.
Two switches appear active, but the door remains barred
The central door needs all three switches. Revisit the pillar and upper grapple route and identify the missing activation. A ranged switch can be overlooked if the pillar is viewed from the wrong angle; move until the switch is visible and take another shot. For the elevated switch, follow the grapple route rather than searching only at ground level.
The runes are difficult to read
Use the central hall as your checkpoint and inspect the indicators after each activation. The intended confirmation is three lit runes. If fewer than three are lit, the door is not ready, even if you have opened the side gate and explored the rest of the room.
You left the vault and are unsure whether progress remains
Return to the main hall and inspect the runes and door. The current documentation does not guarantee persistence across every session or multiplayer state, so the in-game indicators are more reliable than an assumption about what should have been saved. If a switch is no longer registered, repeat that switch’s route.
You are trying to summon the Hunter from inside the vault
Summoning is a base activity. After activating the Hunter’s Cinder Vessel, return to your base and use a Summoning Staff. The central treasure door has no role in that summon step.

- Only want the Hunter: reach her chamber, activate the Cinder Vessel, return to base and summon her with the Summoning Staff. The optional three-switch door can wait.
- Want the gold chest now: open the side gate, press its button, activate the ranged pillar switch and complete the upper grapple route, then verify three lit runes and enter the central chamber.
- Already opened the gate and left: come back to the main hall, check the runes, and continue with any unregistered switch. Opening the gate did not lock you out.
- Playing with others or across sessions: verify the state in the vault before relying on earlier progress, because universal persistence is not explicitly documented.
Quick checklist before you exit
- The side gate is open.
- The button inside the gated room has been pressed.
- The pillar switch has been hit from range.
- The upper switch has been activated through the grapple route.
- All three runes in the main hall are lit.
- The central barred door has been opened and the gold chest has been looted if that is your goal.
- The Hunter’s Cinder Vessel has been activated if you are completing the rescue objective.
- You have returned to base with a Summoning Staff if you intend to summon Athalan Skree.
