Can You Return to Missed Areas and Collectibles After Finishing Valor Mortis? Yes—Here’s How

Yes. After you defeat Valor Mortis’s final boss and watch the credits, the game returns you to the world instead of sealing the map. Lucjan and a Lantern appear near the final-fight area; use that Lantern’s Travel option to revisit earlier regions and finish collectibles, side-quest progress, Ambers, upgrade materials, weapons, and other completion tasks.

There is a temporary travel lock earlier in the story, but it does not permanently remove content. The last safe opportunity to use fast travel before that lock is the Lantern immediately before the Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris fight in University. Travel becomes available again after the final boss.

What happens after you finish Valor Mortis?

Once the final boss is defeated and the credits have played, Valor Mortis places William back into a free-roam state. You can continue exploring instead of starting a new game immediately. The post-game return point includes Lucjan and a Lantern near the area where the final confrontation took place.

Interact with the Lantern and select Travel. That menu lets you choose previously discovered Lanterns in earlier regions. From there, you can retrace story routes, enter locations you skipped, complete side content, and collect items that were left behind during the campaign.

  • HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
  • SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
  • UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.

This is the practical answer to questions such as “Can I free roam after beating Valor Mortis?” and “Can I go back for collectibles after finishing?” The answer is yes, provided that the destination’s Lantern has been discovered or you can reach the area by following connected paths from another Lantern.

Is there a point of no return?

There is a point at which fast travel is temporarily disabled, but it is not a permanent missable-content lock. The sequence begins around the University chapter and the fight against Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris.

The last safe pre-lock Lantern

Immediately before the Raphael fight, you reach a Lantern that still offers Travel. This is the final convenient chance to leave University, strengthen your character, or complete nearby work before the prison sequence. If you know you want to clean up earlier regions before continuing, use Travel at this Lantern rather than assuming you can return during the next story section.

What the lock does

After Raphael, William is captured and the prison section begins. During this sequence, the Travel option is disabled. You cannot use the Lantern network to jump back to previous regions while the lock is active, so missed collectibles and side content may have to wait.

When access returns

The lock lasts until the final boss is defeated. After the ending, the game restores the wider world and the Lantern travel system, allowing you to resume cleanup. Because the restriction is temporary, progressing through the prison section does not permanently invalidate a 100% run.

How to fast-travel back to old areas

Lanterns serve as rest points throughout Valor Mortis. After Chapter 2, they also provide a fast-travel menu covering the Lanterns you have already discovered. The post-game cleanup process is therefore straightforward:

  1. Defeat the final boss. Let the ending and credits finish so the post-game world is loaded.
  2. Find the post-game Lantern. Lucjan and a Lantern are available near the final-fight area when you return.
  3. Interact with the Lantern. Choose the Travel option rather than resting or leaving the interaction.
  4. Select a discovered destination. Pick the Lantern associated with the region or objective you want to revisit.
  5. Follow the local route. From that Lantern, search the surrounding paths, buildings, and previously visited objectives for the item or quest step you missed.
  6. Use connected routes when necessary. If the precise location has no discovered Lantern, travel to the nearest available one and walk the connected route. The fast-travel menu does not create new destinations; it only lists Lanterns you have already found.

The complete collectible guide describes ten regions. Treat the Lantern list as your travel index across those regions, then use regional checklists to identify which pickups or quest steps remain.

What can you collect after the final boss?

Published endgame and collectible guides report that content required for trophies and 100% completion is not permanently missable. Cleanup can be performed before the final boss or after it, so you can choose the timing that best fits your build and route.

  • Mediterranean Horror: Explore the forsaken capital of an awe-inspiring archipelago. Do not let yourself be fooled by the gentle sea breeze, the Mediterranean vistas or the comforting summer sun. Since the Devil's Fevers pandemic ravaged the city, it was abandoned, and now only horrific nightmares await there.
  • Survive your Nemesis: Someone is relentlessly hunting you. Suffer and agonize while you try to run away from the encounters with this strange stalker obsessed with you.
  • Intense Challenges: Solve environmental riddles, physics puzzles and other similar challenges in an interconnected vertical world. Even while being chased and hunted.
  • Accessibility and Photomode: Tweak more than 20 Accessibility settings to create a tailored experience for you. Use the Photomode to make perfect shots and unlock many secrets using it.

Collectibles and Ambers

Missed collectibles remain available during post-game exploration. The complete guide records 28 unique Ambers, making them a useful category to track separately from ordinary pickups. If your inventory or checklist shows a gap, travel to the relevant region and search from its nearest Lantern.

Upgrade materials

Upgrade materials that were skipped during story exploration can also be collected during cleanup. Returning after the ending can be efficient because you already know which upgrades or resources your build needs and can plan a single route through several nearby locations.

Weapons and other pickups

Weapons and other completion pickups documented in the guides remain obtainable after the story. Revisit optional rooms, side paths, and locations that were inaccessible or easy to overlook during the first pass.

Side quests and progress

Endgame walkthroughs include side-quest progress among the activities that can be cleaned up before or after the final boss. If a quest objective was interrupted by the temporary Travel lock, finish the prison sequence and return through the Lantern network once the post-game state is available.

When should you do your cleanup?

There are three sensible points to collect missed content. None is universally best; the right choice depends on whether you prefer uninterrupted story momentum or a thorough first-playthrough map.

Timing Access method Best for Important limitation
Normal exploration before Raphael Lantern Travel and walking connected routes Players who want upgrades, weapons, and side quests before the late game You must track what has already been collected, and some areas may still be inaccessible until later story progress.
At the Lantern immediately before Raphael Use the Lantern’s Travel option before starting the fight A final pre-lock sweep of earlier regions or character preparation This is the last safe opportunity to travel before the prison sequence disables Travel.
After the final boss and credits Post-game Lantern near the final-fight area, then Travel Complete cleanup, trophy hunting, 100% completion, and checking every region in one dedicated pass Travel is restored only after the final boss; you cannot use it during the prison lock.

For most players, post-game cleanup is the least stressful option. You can finish the story without constantly comparing your inventory against a checklist, then make a dedicated circuit through all ten regions. If you need a specific weapon or upgrade before Raphael, however, use the pre-fight Lantern while Travel is still active.

A practical post-game cleanup checklist

  • Record your current region list. Compare the Lanterns you have discovered with the ten regions documented in the complete guide.
  • Check Ambers first. There are 28 unique Ambers to account for; mark each one as you confirm it.
  • Review weapon pickups. Revisit optional rooms and side routes where a weapon or related completion item was easy to pass.
  • Gather upgrade materials. Sweep resource-heavy paths while traveling between collectible locations instead of making separate trips.
  • Revisit side-quest locations. Speak with relevant characters and inspect objectives that were left incomplete before the final sequence.
  • Use Lanterns as checkpoints. Rest and record your progress after each regional sweep so a disconnected session does not force you to repeat an entire route.
  • Confirm trophy requirements. The published guides state that the content needed for trophies and 100% completion can still be obtained after the story.

What if Travel is missing from the Lantern menu?

You are still in the prison sequence

If Travel is unavailable after Raphael, that is expected. The capture and prison section temporarily disables the network. Continue the main story until the final boss is defeated; the post-game return restores access.

You have not reached Chapter 2

Lanterns function as rest points from the outset, but the fast-travel menu becomes available after Chapter 2. Before that point, reaching another area may require walking the connected routes.

The destination Lantern was never discovered

Travel lists discovered Lanterns, not every possible point on the world map. Select the nearest available destination and reach the missing area on foot. Once a Lantern is found, it becomes a useful return point for later cleanup.

You are checking the wrong point after the ending

After the credits, look near the final-fight area for Lucjan and the available Lantern. Interact with that Lantern directly and choose Travel; the post-game world is not a separate “cleanup mode” selected from the title screen.

Does this mean any collectible is permanently missable?

According to the published endgame walkthrough and complete collectible guide, no content required for trophies and 100% completion is permanently missable. The guides specifically describe earlier areas as remaining available after the final boss and list collectibles, Ambers, upgrade materials, weapons, side-quest progress, and other completion pickups as cleanup targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean every objective is available at every moment. The temporary Travel lock changes when you can move between regions, and story progression can determine which routes are open. The important distinction is that the lock ends after the final boss; it does not erase the underlying content or force a new playthrough.

What about New Game+?

Lyrical Games announced New Game+ for Q4 2026, describing a second playthrough with new challenges and tougher enemies while retaining loot and character progression from the first run. The announcement was reported by Insider Gaming. An announcement is not the same as confirmed availability in your edition or region, so check the current in-game menu and official release information before assuming the mode is live.

New Game+ is therefore optional for cleanup. You do not need to begin a second playthrough merely to recover missed collectibles from the first one; the post-game Lantern system is designed to let you finish the existing save.

Bottom line for a 100% playthrough

Finish the final boss and credits, return to the Lantern near the final-fight area, and use Travel to revisit discovered Lanterns across the ten regions. The only major interruption is the temporary lock that begins after Captain Raphael in University and ends with the final boss. Because the lock is temporary and the guides report that completion content is not permanently missable, you can safely postpone a full collectible sweep until the story is over.
