Yes, in some cases—but not with a generic bolt-on filter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verifies diesel particulate filters (DPFs), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and other retrofit systems for particular engine families, configurations, model years and operating conditions. A compliant retrofit requires matching the device to your generator, proving that the exhaust conditions are suitable, and following the supplier’s installation and maintenance requirements.
What an emissions-filter retrofit actually does
A retrofit adds exhaust after-treatment to an engine that is already in service. The device is installed in the exhaust line downstream of the engine and is intended to reduce pollutants that the original certification did not eliminate. EPA describes retrofit technologies as products that may be added to further reduce emissions from certified engine configurations.

The most common choices for a diesel generator are a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). They are not interchangeable. A DPF physically captures soot and other particulate matter (PM); a DOC promotes chemical oxidation of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and may have little effect on PM. Some systems combine catalyst and filter functions.

EPA states that each DPF is verified for use with specific engines or configurations over a range of model years. A unit that works on one engine family is not automatically legal, safe or effective on another engine with the same horsepower rating. The verified scope can also distinguish stationary engines from on-road or non-road applications.

When a retrofit is technically feasible
Before choosing equipment, establish whether the generator can provide the conditions the device needs. The following factors determine feasibility:
- Engine identity: manufacturer, engine model, model year, displacement, rated horsepower, turbocharger and exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) configuration, plus the EPA engine-family name on the emissions label or certification paperwork.
- Application classification: stationary standby, stationary prime-power, non-road mobile or another regulatory category. A verified system can be limited to one category.
- Exhaust flow and temperature: the filter must be sized for the engine’s mass flow and must reach the temperature range specified by its verification. A generator that spends most of its time lightly loaded may not supply enough heat for passive regeneration.
- Duty cycle: record how often the set runs, at what loads, and for how long. A short weekly exercise run behaves very differently from a prime-power set running for hours at high load.
- Engine-out emissions and condition: excessive soot, oil consumption, smoke, injector problems or a damaged turbocharger can overload a filter and shorten its service life.
- Fuel and lubricant: the device may require ultra-low-sulfur diesel and a specified low-ash engine oil. Sulfur and lubricant ash affect catalyst activity, filter loading and cleaning intervals.
- Exhaust-system integrity: leaks, loose joints and an undersized muffler can change temperatures and invalidate the installation assumptions.
If any of these inputs are unknown, collect them before requesting a quotation. A supplier should be able to show that the proposed system’s verified coverage explicitly includes the engine and application, rather than relying on a general horsepower match.
DPF versus DOC: which filter addresses your problem?
| Technology | Main function | What to compare | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel particulate filter (DPF) | Captures particulate matter and soot | Verified PM reduction, engine and model-year coverage, exhaust-flow limit, temperature window, regeneration method, ash-cleaning interval and backpressure monitoring | Can plug if the engine produces excess soot or never reaches the required regeneration conditions; adds exhaust restriction and maintenance |
| Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) | Oxidizes hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide | Verified HC and CO reductions, engine coverage, minimum temperature, sulfur tolerance and allowable backpressure | Usually is not the right tool when the primary requirement is substantial PM reduction |
A DPF is normally considered when particulate emissions are the main concern or when a permit or incentive program specifies a PM target. A DOC can be more suitable when HC and CO matter most and the engine’s PM level or exhaust temperature makes a wall-flow filter impractical. Only the verified test scope establishes what reduction a particular system is expected to deliver.

Published EPA results—and why they are not universal guarantees
EPA verification results illustrate the possible range, but they apply only to the named systems under their stated baseline and criteria:
| Verified system | PM reduction | HC reduction | CO reduction | Scope note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purifilter EGR DPF | 90% | 90% | 80% | EPA verification under its specified baseline and criteria |
| Donaldson NR-LNF DPF | 90% | 95% | 90% | EPA verification under its specified baseline and criteria |
| Semi-Active Electric DPF | 90% | 65% | 60% | EPA verification for an on-road scope under its specified baseline and criteria |
These percentages are system-specific verified results, not a promise that every generator retrofit will achieve the same reduction. Your engine’s model, maintenance condition, load profile, fuel, installation and compliance with the verification conditions all matter.
How to select a verified system
- Read the engine label and records. Capture the manufacturer, model, serial number, model year, displacement, horsepower, turbo/EGR arrangement and EPA engine-family designation. Keep photographs of the label and copies of certification documents.
- Characterize operation. Record annual hours, exercise-run duration, average and peak load, ambient conditions and any long periods below the manufacturer’s recommended load. Install temporary temperature and load logging if the supplier requires measured data.
- Inspect the engine first. Correct injector, turbocharger, compression, cooling, oil-leak and exhaust-leak problems. Document smoke or opacity, oil consumption, fuel consumption and maintenance history. A filter should not be used to mask an engine fault.
- Confirm fuel and oil compatibility. Verify that the site uses ultra-low-sulfur diesel and the low-ash lubricant grade required by the proposed device. Changing fuel or oil after installation can alter loading and regeneration behavior.
- Search the current verified lists. Check EPA’s verified technology listings and, where applicable, California Air Resources Board (CARB) verified lists. Read the complete coverage statement: engine family, model years, horsepower or displacement range, application class, exhaust-flow limits and operating conditions.
- Obtain an application-specific design. Have the verified supplier or a qualified installer calculate filter volume, catalyst configuration, pipe diameter, mounting supports, insulation and allowable backpressure. Ask what sensors, data logging or control hardware are mandatory.
- Document the baseline. Record pre-installation backpressure, exhaust temperature, smoke or opacity, engine performance, fuel and oil use, and any existing fault codes. These records provide a reference if the generator later loses power or the filter loads rapidly.
- Install and commission the system. Follow the verified installation instructions exactly, including sensor locations, clearances, drain points, thermal protection and any regeneration controls. Perform post-installation backpressure and temperature checks under representative loads.
- Set up records and training. Keep the verification documentation, invoices, serial numbers, maintenance schedule, cleaning certificates, regeneration events and inspection results with the generator’s compliance file.
Regeneration: does a generator DPF need extra equipment?
Every DPF must remove the soot it captures. In passive regeneration, normal exhaust heat and catalyst chemistry burn accumulated soot continuously or during sufficiently hot operating periods. In active regeneration, the system adds heat—through an electric heater, fuel dosing, a burner or another control method—when sensors detect that soot loading has reached a specified threshold.

There is no single temperature that applies to every generator DPF. The required temperature window depends on the filter substrate, catalyst, engine-out NOx and PM, exhaust flow, fuel sulfur and the verified system design. A supplier may require logged exhaust temperatures at several loads before approving a passive system. If a standby set normally runs only a few minutes during weekly exercises, it may need an active regeneration strategy or a different verified technology.
Recommended Free Tools
Regeneration equipment adds electrical demand, controls, sensors and failure modes. It also requires a safe installation that maintains the manufacturer’s clearances and prevents overheating nearby wiring or enclosure materials. Never force a regeneration strategy that is outside the device’s verified instructions.
Backpressure, ash and routine maintenance
A clean DPF creates some exhaust restriction. As soot and non-combustible ash accumulate, restriction rises. Excessive backpressure can reduce engine output, increase fuel use, raise exhaust temperature and damage the engine or turbocharger. A verified installation may therefore require a differential-pressure sensor, gauge, alarm or data logger. Define the alarm and shutdown limits with the installer and engine manufacturer.

Soot is burned during regeneration; ash is not. Ash comes mainly from lubricant additives and remains in the filter until the element is removed and cleaned by an approved process. The cleaning interval is not universal: it depends on oil consumption, annual hours, engine-out PM and the specific verification. Use the supplier’s measured pressure or ash-loading criteria rather than a calendar guess.
- Inspect pressure readings and temperature data at the interval specified by the system.
- Investigate a sudden pressure increase, repeated regeneration or a new smoke event before continuing normal operation.
- Use only the approved fuel and low-ash oil grades.
- Keep regeneration and filter-cleaning records, including date, engine hours, measured restriction and the service provider.
- Check clamps, gaskets, supports, insulation and sensor wiring during generator maintenance.
Common failure modes and corrective actions
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Filter loads quickly or regeneration is frequent | Low-load operation, injector or turbo fault, excessive oil consumption, unsuitable fuel or a non-matching filter | Load profile, smoke, oil use, engine fault codes, fuel specification and verified coverage |
| Backpressure alarm | Soot or ash accumulation, crushed exhaust pipe, blocked muffler or failed pressure sensor | Pressure sensor lines, physical exhaust condition and the supplier’s cleaning threshold; stop and protect the engine if limits are exceeded |
| Regeneration does not complete | Insufficient temperature, failed heater or doser, sensor fault, interrupted run or control interlock | Temperature trace, control diagnostics, fuel or electrical supply and the required minimum run conditions |
| High exhaust temperature or enclosure heat | Uncontrolled active regeneration, insulation failure, incorrect mounting or a restricted outlet | Thermocouples, clearances, insulation, supports and the installation drawing; shut down if safety limits are approached |
| Engine power or fuel economy worsens | Excessive restriction, poor installation, engine fault or filter damage | Compare post-installation measurements with the baseline and have the installer inspect the system |
Standby generators require special planning
A standby genset can be a difficult DPF application because it may spend most of its life idle and run only during tests or outages. Short, lightly loaded runs may never produce the heat needed for passive regeneration, while an outage can suddenly demand a long high-load run when the filter is already near its loading limit.

Permits, compliance and warranty
EPA verification does not automatically replace local approval. Stationary-source permits, air-district rules, CARB requirements, fire codes, ventilation rules, noise limits and emergency-generator operating restrictions vary by jurisdiction. Ask the authority having jurisdiction whether the retrofit changes the permit, reporting, testing or recordkeeping obligations before installation.
Also obtain written confirmation from the engine and generator manufacturers about warranty effects. A device installed outside its verified scope, with unapproved oil, or without required backpressure monitoring can create both compliance and warranty disputes. Keep the verification page, installation manual, commissioning measurements and maintenance logs available for an inspector or warranty claim.
Cost, service life and payback
There is no single published retrofit price, service-life figure or payback period that applies to existing diesel generators. Total cost depends on engine size, exhaust layout, mounting and insulation, sensors and controls, active-regeneration hardware, permitting, commissioning, cleaning and the site’s annual hours. A small standby engine with a short exhaust run can have very different costs from a large prime-power set in an enclosure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRequest an itemized application assessment rather than a filter-only price. It should identify equipment, engineering, installation, monitoring, initial testing, recurring cleaning, replacement parts, travel and permit support. Compare those costs with the emissions requirement you must meet; a less expensive DOC may not satisfy a PM limit, while a DPF may be unnecessary if HC and CO are the only regulated pollutants.
Questions to ask a retrofit supplier
- Does the verified coverage list my exact EPA engine family, model year, horsepower or displacement and stationary/non-road classification?
- What PM, HC and CO reductions are verified for this configuration, and under what baseline and operating conditions?
- What exhaust-flow and temperature range must be demonstrated, and how will those values be logged?
- Will passive regeneration work with my exercise schedule, or is active regeneration required?
- What backpressure sensor, alarm and shutdown limits are mandatory?
- Which fuel sulfur level and low-ash oil specification are required?
- How is ash cleaned, who may perform the cleaning, and what measurement triggers service?
- What permits, inspections or notifications apply in my jurisdiction?
- What installation records and maintenance logs are needed to preserve verification and warranty coverage?
Bottom line for an existing generator
A retrofit can substantially reduce emissions when a verified DPF, DOC or combined system is matched to the exact engine and operated within its documented conditions. Start with the engine family and duty-cycle data, not with a generic product search. Verify temperature and exhaust-flow suitability, correct engine faults, use the required fuel and oil, install backpressure monitoring when specified, and obtain local permit and warranty approval. If the generator cannot meet the regeneration or temperature requirements, a different verified technology—or replacement with a cleaner certified engine—may be more reliable than forcing a filter onto it.
