A digital game bought from a console or PC storefront is normally a personal, account-bound license rather than a property right you can sell or move. PlayStation, Nintendo, Microsoft and Steam all restrict transfer or resale in their published rules. A disc or cartridge is easier to hand to another person, but activation codes, online entitlements and virtual items may still stay tied to the original account.
What you actually buy when you purchase a digital game
The checkout screen may use words such as “buy” or “purchase,” but the legal and technical arrangement is generally a license. You receive permission to access software under the storefront’s terms, usually for private, non-commercial use. The account records that permission, and the platform’s servers and digital-rights-management (DRM) systems enforce it.

That distinction matters because ownership of a copy and permission to use a service are different things. A digital entitlement can depend on your account, the country associated with it, a subscription, an activation server or the continued operation of online services. Downloading files to a console or computer does not normally turn the license into an independently transferable object.

- The software license: permission to run the game.
- The account: the identity to which the entitlement is attached.
- DRM and activation: technical checks that can block use by another account.
- Online services and extras: multiplayer access, season passes, virtual currency and one-time codes that may have separate terms.
Those elements explain why copying an installed folder, handing over a console or sharing a password does not usually transfer the legal license.
Rules on the major storefronts
The following rules are the practical starting point. They describe the platforms’ stated policies; a mandatory rule in your country could affect the result, so check the regional agreement that applies to your account.

“Unsupported” and “prohibited” are not the same. A platform may simply provide no transfer tool, or its contract may expressly ban the transaction. In both situations, a buyer has no reliable way to obtain the seller’s entitlement and may lose access if the platform detects a violation.

Can you sell a redeemed digital game?
Assume the answer is no unless the regional storefront terms and applicable law clearly say otherwise. Once a code has been redeemed, the entitlement is normally recorded against one account. There is no transferable serial number left for a buyer, and the platform has no standard process for detaching the license from your account and attaching it to theirs.

Selling your entire account is not a workaround. It exposes your email address, payment history, saved data and other purchases, and it can violate the platform agreement. Steam expressly bans buying, selling, trading or gifting accounts. The other major storefront rules likewise treat digital purchases as personal licenses rather than resale inventory.
Deleting the game from your hard drive, changing the account email or giving someone your password does not alter that status. DRM can continue to require the original account, an activation token or an online check. If the account is recovered by its original owner or suspended by the platform, the purchaser may lose every game at once.
Can you transfer a game between your own accounts?
Most storefronts do not offer a transfer function. Nintendo gives a direct answer: digital purchases cannot be moved from one Nintendo Account to another. Similar account binding is the normal arrangement on console and PC stores.
Console sharing is access, not ownership
Some consoles let other user profiles play downloaded software when the purchasing account designates a console or enables a sharing feature. Nintendo states that anyone using the purchasing console can use downloaded content. Such sharing is a permission controlled by the original account and device settings; it does not create a second license, provide a saleable copy or move the purchase to the other user’s account.

Family and household features have limits
Sharing systems can be limited by the number of designated devices, simultaneous use, region, offline requirements or the platform’s current policy. A person who relies on your account for access may lose it when you change the primary console, sign out, cancel a subscription or lose internet authentication. Treat sharing as a convenience for your household, not as a permanent transfer.
What DRM changes in practice
DRM combines contractual restrictions with technical controls. The EULA or terms prohibit resale, while the software checks account credentials, activation records or a server response. This combination is the standard way publishers prevent a used digital-game market, as described in analysis from the World Intellectual Property Organization.
- Account checks: the launcher verifies that the signed-in account owns the entitlement.
- Activation limits: a one-time code may be consumed by the first account that redeems it.
- Server dependence: multiplayer, cloud saves or even first launch can require an online service.
- Device authorization: a console may permit access only while it is designated for the purchasing account.
DRM does not by itself decide what your country’s law permits. It does mean that a theoretical resale right may be difficult to exercise when the license is inseparable from an account or a continuing online service. Copyright doctrines about exhaustion, contract terms accepted at checkout and consumer-protection rules are separate questions.
When a physical disc or cartridge can be resold
A physical copy is a clearer resale object because you can hand over the disc or cartridge itself. A publisher EULA example permits permanent transfer of the entire physical copy of pre-recorded software when the seller keeps no copies. That permission does not automatically include every digital feature associated with the product.

Check these items before listing a physical copy
- Single-use activation codes: a code printed inside the box may already be redeemed and may be expressly non-transferable.
- Downloadable content: season passes, bonus missions and expansion codes can remain attached to the first account.
- Virtual currency and items: these are commonly account-bound and cannot be handed over with the disc.
- Online requirements: the disc may install the game, but servers, subscriptions or publisher accounts can still be required to play.
- Completeness: disclose whether manuals, inserts and codes are missing or used.
Do not advertise a physical sale as including online entitlements you cannot transfer. The safest description identifies exactly what is in the box and tells the buyer which features require a new account, subscription or separate purchase.
Giving someone a game legally
If your goal is to help another person play a title, use an official gifting route rather than trying to move a redeemed license.
- Check whether the storefront offers gifting in your region. A gift flow issues the recipient a new license instead of detaching yours.
- If direct gifting is unavailable, use a platform gift card. The recipient redeems the balance on their own account and chooses the game.
- For a physical gift, verify the box contents. State clearly whether any code has been redeemed and whether online play needs a subscription.
- Keep the receipt and redemption evidence. This helps resolve a failed code or regional mismatch without sharing your account credentials.
A gift card does not resell a game you already redeemed. It funds a separate purchase that creates a new license for the recipient.

Country, contract and service-life complications
Rules can differ by country, storefront edition and the wording shown when you accepted the agreement. Some legal systems impose mandatory consumer rights that a contract cannot remove; others treat account-based software and online services differently from a simple copy of a program. The available evidence does not establish one universal resale rule for every European or United States purchase.

There is also a difference between a perpetual license and a time-limited service. A game obtained through a subscription may stop working when the subscription ends even though it is installed. A title whose servers have closed may lose multiplayer or authentication features, while an offline mode may continue if the publisher supports it. Read the game’s EULA, the storefront agreement and any subscription terms for your country before assuming a right to keep or transfer access.
Decision guide: choose the safe path

Common failed approaches and how to avoid them
“I will sell the console with my account still signed in.”
This risks exposing personal data and still may breach the platform agreement. The buyer does not obtain a secure, independent license, and you may be unable to recover the account after handing over the device.
“I will change the email address after payment.”
An email change does not rewrite the purchase history or make account trading permissible. It can also trigger security checks, fraud reviews or a dispute over who controls the account.

A redeemed code has no second-use entitlement. Offer only unused codes, and tell the buyer about region restrictions and expiration dates when the platform states them.
“The files are on my drive, so I own a copy.”
Local files are only one part of the arrangement. The license, account record and DRM check determine whether another person can lawfully and technically run the game.
What to check before spending money or attempting a transfer
- Open the current regional terms for the storefront and the game’s EULA.
- Confirm whether the purchase is a standalone license, a subscription entitlement or a bundle containing one-time codes.
- Check whether online servers, a publisher account or a platform subscription is required.
- For a physical copy, ask whether the included code has been redeemed and whether the seller retains any account-bound bonus.
- Review the storefront’s refund window before trying to recover value through a resale.
- Never provide your password, payment details or recovery codes to a prospective buyer.
Because platform wording, sharing tools, refund policies and server requirements change, verify the terms shown for your country immediately before a transaction.
