Can You Resell or Share a Physical Game After Redeeming Its Digital Bonus?

Usually, yes: redeeming a separate digital bonus normally does not prevent you from handing on the disc or cartridge. The bonus entitlement generally stays attached to the account that redeemed it, however. A buyer should not be promised a fresh code, downloadable content, or account access unless the package explicitly includes an unused, region-compatible code and the seller can verify it. The legality and contractual conditions for reselling the game itself depend on the platform, publisher, edition, region, and local law.

The short answer: the disc and the digital bonus are different things

A boxed game can contain several separate rights and objects:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Physical media: the disc or cartridge that runs the game, subject to the platform and publisher’s software terms.
  • A one-time code: a printed voucher that adds downloadable content, a soundtrack, virtual currency, a character, an online pass, or another bonus to one platform account.
  • An account-linked entitlement: content granted directly to the account that redeemed a code or made a purchase.
  • Content already on the media: assets that are present on the disc or cartridge and do not require a separate code, although an update or entitlement may still be needed.

Redeeming a code normally changes only the second or third item. It does not magically erase the physical disc or cartridge. You can usually sell or lend that physical item, but you must describe what the next person will actually receive. If the voucher was redeemed, it is not part of the usable contents for the buyer.

The exact answer cannot be determined from a title alone. The game’s platform, country, edition, publisher terms, and the way the bonus was delivered all matter.

Identify what the bonus actually is

Before listing the game, inspect the box, cartridge, disc case, insert, and any account history. The same marketing phrase, such as “bonus DLC,” can describe very different arrangements.

Bonus arrangement What redemption does What a buyer receives with the used physical copy
Separate printed download code The code is consumed by the account that enters it. A code that reports as used is no longer a new voucher. The disc or cartridge, plus any code that is genuinely unused. If already redeemed, advertise the code as used or exclude it.
Account-linked digital entitlement The platform records the bonus against one account. It normally does not move when the physical copy changes hands. The physical game only; do not promise the original owner’s account content.
Bonus content on the disc or cartridge No separate voucher may be consumed. The content can be available to whoever has the media, subject to updates and platform rules. The media and whatever content it contains, accurately described. Check whether an online service or separate entitlement is still required.
Boxed product that is code-only There may be no transferable physical game at all. The purchase may be a package containing only a digital key. Only the physical packaging and any unused key, not a playable disc or cartridge.

If the edition is unclear, use the exact title printed on the case and identify the platform, region, and edition name in the listing. “Collector’s,” “launch,” “deluxe,” and “complete” editions can have different inclusions even when the base game is identical.

Why an already-used code cannot be treated as a fresh bonus

A one-time code is generally checked by the platform when it is redeemed. Nintendo’s support guidance says that a code reporting as already used has been redeemed; it directs users to the eShop purchase history to confirm whether the content appears on the account. Nintendo also notes that code region matters. A code intended for one country or storefront may not work on an account in another region.

That creates two separate questions:

  • Was the code used? If it was redeemed on your account, the next owner should assume it is unavailable.
  • Would it work in the buyer’s region? Even an unused code can be restricted to a particular country or platform storefront.

Do not print “bonus included” in a listing when the voucher has already been redeemed. Say “physical game only; bonus code used,” or state the exact remaining contents. If you cannot verify whether a code works, describe it as unverified rather than implying that it is redeemable.

How platform terms affect resale

Platform policies do not create one worldwide rule. They distinguish between licensed digital goods, physical software, and the terms imposed by the publisher of a particular game.

Microsoft and account-based digital goods

Microsoft’s official Digital Goods Rules state: “All Digital Goods are licensed, not sold.” Those rules describe permissions tied to an account or approved devices and generally treat digital entitlements as non-transferable. Microsoft’s Xbox support instructions also explain that a download code is redeemed to a Microsoft account. In practical terms, redeeming the bonus gives your account the entitlement; it does not give a buyer the right to use your account or move that entitlement to another account.

Microsoft also describes a disc-to-digital situation in which continued access depends on keeping the qualifying disc. That is a special arrangement, not a universal rule for every Xbox title. Do not assume that any game disc can be converted into a transferable digital license.

PlayStation terms vary by region

PlayStation’s United States terms describe Store purchases as personal-use licenses that are generally not transferable, while physical purchases are covered by separate terms. That distinction means a digital bonus attached to an account should not be represented as something the buyer can inherit.

PlayStation’s United Kingdom Software Usage Terms specifically address disc-based software and state that resale requires express authorisation, including authorisation from the publisher when it is a separate company. This is a UK-specific example. It should not be presented as a rule for every country, every PlayStation edition, or every physical game. Check the current terms that apply where the transaction occurs.

Nintendo codes and region matching

Nintendo’s support material focuses on the operational facts buyers and sellers need: an already-used download code has been redeemed, and the code’s region must match the relevant account or storefront. That does not by itself settle every legal question about selling a cartridge. It does mean you should not advertise a used code as available or ignore the region printed on the voucher.

What you should do before selling

  1. Locate the exact physical item. Confirm that you have a disc or cartridge rather than a box containing only a digital key.
  2. Record the platform and edition. Note the console family, game title, edition label, and region printed on the packaging or cartridge.
  3. Inspect every insert. Look for a scratch-off panel, voucher number, expiry language, region restriction, or statement that the item is a code-only product.
  4. Check redemption status. If you entered the code, review the relevant platform’s purchase or account history. A redeemed code is not a usable bonus for the buyer.
  5. Separate account content from media content. Do not include your account, login details, saved data, or account-linked licenses in the transaction.
  6. Read the current terms. Check the platform’s rules, the game’s publisher terms, and local resale requirements for your region. Platform examples from another country may not control your transaction.
  7. Test only what you can legitimately test. You may check that the physical media is present and readable, but do not attempt to transfer an account entitlement to prove it is transferable.
  8. Write a precise listing. State whether the bonus code is unused, used, missing, expired, region-restricted, or unverified.

Keep the wording factual. For example: “Physical disc for [game title], [platform] [edition]. Disc included. Digital bonus code redeemed on seller’s account and not included. Region: [region].” Variable text such as a game title or region should be replaced with the actual information before publication.

How to evaluate a used copy as a buyer

Assume that an advertised bonus is unavailable unless the seller can show that the voucher is unused and matches your storefront region. A photograph of a sealed-looking insert is not proof that the code has never been entered, and a seller cannot legitimately give you the original owner’s account to obtain account-linked content.

  • Ask for the exact platform, region, and edition.
  • Ask whether the voucher was ever redeemed, not merely whether the paper insert is present.
  • Ask what content is physically on the disc or cartridge and what content requires a separate download.
  • Confirm the seller is transferring the physical media, not a code-only box.
  • Assume an unverified or previously redeemed code has no resale value unless the seller explicitly guarantees a remedy that is lawful and available through the platform.

If the bonus is important to your purchase decision, buying a new, region-correct edition may be safer than paying extra for a used copy with an uncertain voucher. A used physical game can still be worthwhile when the base game is complete on the media and the bonus is merely cosmetic or optional, but make that decision with the bonus excluded from the advertised contents.

Reselling, lending, and “sharing” are not the same transaction

Reselling the physical copy

Resale means you give the disc or cartridge to another person in exchange for money or another agreed consideration. The buyer receives the media you describe, not the digital rights attached to your account. Whether the publisher or platform permits that transaction is a terms-and-jurisdiction question; the UK PlayStation example shows why a local check is necessary.

Lending a disc or cartridge

Lending leaves ownership with you but lets another person use the physical media temporarily. It still does not lend your redeemed bonus. If the game requires the disc to remain in the console as proof of ownership, the borrower may need the disc present whenever playing. A digital entitlement already attached to your account remains yours and should not be represented as transferred to the borrower.

Sharing an account

Giving someone your login details is a different and riskier act. It can expose payment information, saved data, and security controls, and digital-goods terms generally treat account licenses as personal and non-transferable. Do not use account sharing as a workaround for a used code or as part of a physical-game sale. The safe description is that the recipient gets the media only, unless the platform’s current terms expressly provide another mechanism.

Common edge cases and how to describe them

Situation Accurate treatment
The case says “DLC included,” but the insert code was redeemed State that the physical game is included and the DLC code has been redeemed. Do not list the DLC as transferable.
The code is unused but the buyer is in another region Disclose the printed region and tell the buyer to confirm storefront compatibility before purchase.
The game is sold as “complete” because all inserts are present “Complete” should not imply a working voucher. Describe the redemption status separately.
The bonus appears to be on the disc Check the edition documentation and explain whether an update, online service, or account entitlement is still required.
The package contains no disc or cartridge List it as a code-only product and identify whether the key is unused, redeemed, expired, or unverified.
A buyer asks for the seller’s account to access the bonus Decline. Account-linked content normally remains with the original account and account sharing creates security and terms problems.

What happens if the buyer tries the redeemed code?

The platform may report that the code has already been used, or it may direct the user to the account’s purchase history. That result does not mean the physical disc or cartridge is defective; it means the voucher has already been consumed. If the listing promised an unused code, the dispute is about inaccurate description, not about transferring the original account entitlement.

For that reason, save a copy of the listing and state the code status before completing the sale. If you are buying, keep the seller’s written description and ask questions through the marketplace’s messaging system. Clear records cannot change a platform’s licensing terms, but they reduce confusion over what was actually sold.

A practical decision rule

You can make the decision in four checks:

  1. Physical item: Is there a playable disc or cartridge?
  2. Bonus delivery: Is the bonus on the media, in a separate code, or attached to an account?
  3. Redemption and region: Is the code unused and compatible, or already redeemed or uncertain?
  4. Applicable rules: Do the current platform, publisher, regional, and local terms allow the proposed resale or loan?

If the answer to the first check is yes, the bonus is account-linked or already redeemed, and the listing clearly excludes that bonus, the physical transaction is usually the straightforward part. The remaining question is whether the specific terms and law governing your region permit the transfer. Never turn a general platform example into a guarantee for a different country or edition.

Bottom line for sellers and buyers

Redeeming a separate digital bonus normally does not destroy your physical game. You can usually pass on the disc or cartridge, but the redeemed bonus stays with the account that used it and should not be advertised as included. Verify the exact edition, platform, region, code status, and current terms; disclose every limitation; and never transfer account credentials. A buyer purchasing a used copy should treat any unverified or already-used code as unavailable and value the transaction on the physical game alone.
