Sony does allow limited access sharing: on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, other users of that console can play the purchaser’s downloaded games. Physical discs remain the practical way to hand a game to someone else, although resale rights depend on the applicable regional terms and local law.
The ownership distinction that answers most questions
When you buy a game from the PlayStation Store, you obtain permission for your account to use the software under Sony Interactive Entertainment’s terms. You do not receive a transferable digital object that can be detached from your account and delivered to another person.

The current US Software EULA states: The Software is licensed to you, not sold.
It describes the grant as limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and personal, for private, non-commercial use. That wording is why the PlayStation Store has no ordinary “sell this game,” “lend this license” or “move this purchase to another PSN account” function.
Those contractual rules are not identical everywhere. Sony’s UK Software Usage Terms, for example, expressly say that users must not resell disc-based or digital games unless Sony authorizes it and, where another company published the game, that publisher also authorizes it. The same UK terms say a license is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise. Treat the US EULA and UK terms as examples of regional rules, not as universal legal advice.

What you can and cannot do with a digital purchase
| Action | What normally happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sell the game to another account | There is no normal account-transfer or resale feature. | The license is personal and non-transferable. |
| Gift a game already bought | You cannot convert an existing purchase into a gift for another PSN account. | The purchase remains associated with the buying account. |
| Lend the digital license to a friend on another console | No built-in lending mechanism exists. | Sharing credentials or software over a network is restricted by the terms. |
| Let another user play on your enabled PS5 | Yes, within Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play rules. | Access is shared on that console; ownership is not transferred. |
| Use the purchase on another compatible console | The purchasing account can sign in and download it, subject to account and service checks. | The entitlement follows the account, not a transferable file. |
| Hand someone a physical disc | Practically possible if the recipient has compatible disc hardware. | The physical medium can be passed between people, while software terms and local law still apply. |
Can you sell a digital PS5 or PS4 game?
Not through any standard PlayStation feature. A digital purchase is recorded as an entitlement on the purchasing account. There is no supported process for removing that entitlement and assigning it to a buyer’s account, and creating a second account does not change that relationship.
Selling the entire PSN account is not a legitimate substitute. Sony’s US EULA describes the software license as personal and non-transferable, and it restricts making software available on a network without Sony’s prior written consent. An account sale also exposes both parties to security, payment and recovery disputes: the original owner may still control recovery information, while the buyer has no guaranteed right to keep access if Sony suspends the account or the transaction violates the terms.
If you want money back for an unwanted digital purchase, use the refund process available in your region rather than trying to sell the entitlement. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable store policy, purchase timing and whether you started downloading or streaming the content; it is not a resale system.
Can you gift a game you already bought?
No. PlayStation gifting is a separate purchase made for the recipient, where available. Once a game is bought for your own account, it cannot normally be redirected to a friend’s account. Giving someone your login details is account sharing, not gifting, and it creates the same contractual and security problems as an account sale.
For a legitimate gift, purchase a new copy through an officially supported gifting or voucher option in the recipient’s region. Do not promise that a voucher, add-on or currency code will work across regions: PlayStation Store content is region-sensitive, and the recipient’s account country can affect redemption.
Can you lend a digital game to a friend?
There is no digital equivalent of lending a disc to a friend on a separate console. You cannot check out a license for a week, pause your own access and then return it. Signing into your account on another person’s console may let that person download or play while your account remains present, but it is still account access rather than a license loan and may conflict with Sony’s terms or expose your account.

How PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play actually works
Console Sharing and Offline Play is Sony’s supported way to let other user profiles on one PS5 use games downloaded by the purchasing account. When it is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play the purchaser’s downloaded games and use downloaded media even when the console is offline. The setting can be active on only one PS5 at a time.
Enable sharing on the PS5 that should host the access
- Sign in on the PS5 with the account that bought the games.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts, then Other.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable.
- Download the games while signed in as the purchasing account, then let the other person use their own local PS5 profile.
Menu wording can change with system software, but the feature name and its location under Users and Accounts are the relevant labels. If Console Sharing is already enabled on another PS5, disable it there first or use Sony’s account-management process to deactivate consoles before enabling the new one.
What the other user receives
- They can launch games downloaded from the purchasing account on that enabled PS5.
- They can play supported downloaded games offline on that console.
- They do not receive ownership on their own PSN account.
- They cannot move the entitlement to a different console simply by signing in there.
- If the purchasing account loses access, is suspended or the console setting changes, the shared access can stop.
Why this is not “sharing with a friend on another console”
Sony’s support guidance limits Console Sharing and Offline Play to one PS5. It does not authorize a friend on a separate PS5 to use your library as though they owned it. Remote account swapping and repeated deactivation are unreliable workarounds, not a supported lending plan.
What PlayStation Plus can be shared
Sony allows selected PlayStation Plus benefits to be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled and on one primary PS4. This is benefit sharing at the console level, not a transfer of your subscription or game licenses.
Sony’s Plus guidance says sharing with a friend on another console is not allowed. It also identifies exclusions, including redeeming Plus games on another account, online storage and some time-limited benefits. A second user may therefore be able to use qualifying online multiplayer access or downloaded games on the designated console while the subscription account remains the owner, but they should not expect every Plus feature to follow them.

PS4 terminology
On PS4, the comparable arrangement uses the account’s primary PS4 setting. One account can have one primary PS4 at a time. The PS5 Console Sharing setting and the primary-PS4 designation are separate console controls; neither changes who owns a digital purchase.
Why physical discs are different in practice
A disc purchase gives you possession of a physical medium that can be handed to another person. That is why physical games support ordinary lending, used-market trading and collecting in ways digital entitlements generally do not. The recipient inserts the disc into a compatible console, installs any required data and keeps the disc available as the play check.
Physical does not mean every legal question disappears. Sony’s UK Software Usage Terms say: You must not resell either disc-based games or digital games, unless expressly authorised by us and, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher.
The same terms preserve applicable local law and state that the software license is not transferable unless local law says it must be. Other jurisdictions may treat the exhaustion or resale of a lawfully purchased copy differently. Before selling, check the law where the transaction occurs and the terms that apply to your account and the game.
What the recipient needs
- A console with a working disc drive that supports the game’s format.
- The disc itself; an installation alone does not usually replace the disc check.
- Enough storage for installation, patches and downloadable content.
- Any required system update, publisher account, online subscription or network connection for online features.
Passing on a disc also passes on practical access to the base game, not necessarily your digital add-ons, season pass, virtual currency or account-bound bonuses. Those remain tied to the original account unless the publisher provides a separate transfer mechanism.
Which PS5 plays physical PS4 and PS5 games?
| PS5 configuration | Disc compatibility | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | No disc drive; Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 guidance says it cannot play PS4 disc-based games. | People buying downloads only and not planning to lend or trade discs. |
| PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive | Can play compatible physical PS4 game discs and physical PS5 discs. | People who lend, buy used games, collect discs or want a physical fallback. |
Check the exact model before buying. A detachable or bundled drive, regional model number and included accessories can differ between retail listings. If physical access matters, search for the product description PlayStation 5 console with disc drive and verify the listing’s specifications rather than relying on a shortened title.
Digital and physical access have different failure points
| Concern | Digital purchase | Physical disc |
|---|---|---|
| Account dependence | Requires the purchasing account and its entitlement to remain usable. | The disc remains in your possession, although online services and publisher accounts may still be required for some features. |
| Internet at first use | Usually requires downloading the game; license checks or updates may apply. | Installation and patches can require internet access, but the disc supplies the base software. |
| Sharing | Limited to supported console sharing; no ordinary person-to-person lending. | Hand-to-hand lending is practical when hardware and terms permit. |
| Storage and convenience | Instant purchase and no disc swapping, but consumes console storage. | Can be resold or stored physically, but you must insert the disc to play and protect it from damage. |
| Service availability | Access can depend on account status, license validation and store or network availability. | Single-player base-game access is less dependent on a store account, while servers, patches and online modes can still change. |
Sony’s terms reserve the ability to end online services. Neither format should be described as a promise of perpetual access to every online feature. Keep your account secure, retain purchase records and install updates while they remain available.

Sony’s January 2028 physical-disc announcement
On July 1, 2026, Sony Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman announced that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
Sony said the change does not affect games already released, or games releasing before January 2028, when those titles have a disc format.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a production-policy announcement for new releases, not an immediate deletion of existing discs or a conversion of your library into digital licenses. Discs already in circulation can still be lent or traded as physical objects, subject to the applicable terms and local law. The announcement does mean that people who value a physical option should pay attention to a game’s release date and whether a disc edition is actually planned before January 2028.
Choosing a format based on what you want to do
Choose digital when convenience matters most
- You want immediate downloads and do not plan to sell or lend individual games.
- You normally play on one account and can keep that account secure.
- You are comfortable with console sharing’s one-PS5 limit for household access.
- You accept that online services, account status and license validation affect access.
Choose a disc-drive console and physical copies when flexibility matters
- You regularly lend games to family members or friends in the same household.
- You buy used games, trade completed titles or want a collectible shelf copy.
- You want a physical fallback if a store listing, account or download becomes unavailable.
- You are prepared to store discs safely and insert the correct disc whenever you play.
Use a mixed library deliberately
Many players use digital copies for frequently played titles and discs for games they may lend, trade or buy second-hand. Keep digital purchases on the account that made them, and do not assume a physical disc entitles a different account to your digital expansions or subscription benefits.
Common problems and the correct fix
“My friend cannot launch my game on their PS5.”
Console Sharing and Offline Play works on one designated PS5, not simultaneously as a general friend-sharing service across multiple consoles. Sign in on the PS5 that should host the access, enable the setting under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other, download the game there and use a local profile on that console. If the setting is active elsewhere, deactivate the previous console through Sony’s account controls.
“The game is installed, but it shows a padlock.”
Confirm that the purchasing account is signed in, that the console is the account’s enabled PS5 or primary PS4 where relevant, and that the account can connect for a license check. Restore licenses through the console’s account or system settings, install pending system updates and check whether the purchase was made in the current account or a different regional account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“I gave away the disc, but the recipient cannot play.”
Check that the recipient has a disc-drive model, not a PS5 Digital Edition, and that the disc matches the console generation and region requirements. Make sure the disc is clean, the game is installed, updates have completed and the disc remains inserted. Digital add-ons and account-bound bonuses do not automatically travel with the disc.
“I want to change the account that owns the purchase.”
There is no ordinary transfer tool. Keep the original account secure and use Console Sharing only for the supported on-console access described above. If the account is inaccessible, use Sony’s official account-recovery process rather than buying or selling credentials.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy
- Decide whether you might lend, trade or resell the game; if so, a disc and a disc-drive console provide the practical route.
- Check the exact PS5 model and confirm whether it has an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive.
- Read the software and store terms for your country; US and UK wording is not interchangeable.
- For digital purchases, buy on the account you intend to keep and protect it with a unique password and two-factor authentication.
- For household sharing, designate only the PS5 you control and remember that the setting is limited to one PS5.
- Do not count on physical releases for every new game after Sony’s January 2028 production change.
- Keep receipts, disc cases and account-recovery information in case you need support.
Bottom line for each scenario
| Your goal | Most accurate answer |
|---|---|
| Sell a digital game | No standard PlayStation resale or account-transfer feature. |
| Gift a game already purchased | Not normally possible; buy a separate supported gift or voucher instead. |
| Lend a digital game to a friend elsewhere | No supported lending mechanism; do not share credentials. |
| Share games with household users on one PS5 | Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5. |
| Lend or trade a game physically | Practical with a compatible disc and console, but check regional terms and local law. |
| Keep buying new games on disc indefinitely | Not guaranteed: Sony announced that production for new PlayStation releases will stop starting January 2028. |
