Yes, in practical terms: you can hand a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card to someone else, and they can use it on their console after downloading the game data. You can also start the installed game offline, provided the game itself does not require an internet connection—but the card must remain inserted. The card is a key, not a copy of the full game.
What a game-key card does
A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card does not contain the full game. It holds a key used to download the game data over the internet. Insert the card and follow the prompts on the HOME Menu; you need an internet connection and enough free space on the console or a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the packaging indicates the required storage, and a Nintendo Account is not required to download the data. Nintendo’s game-key card overview

Can you play a game-key card offline?
After the game data has been downloaded, Nintendo says you can start the game without an internet connection. The game-key card still has to be inserted in the console, just like a standard game card. Offline launch does not mean every feature works offline: a title’s online multiplayer, services, or other internet-dependent features may still need a connection. Nintendo’s overview and its Switch 2 FAQ explain the download and card requirements.
Can you lend or resell the card?
You can physically pass the card to another person. Nintendo says a game-key card can be used on any console, but the game data must be downloaded on that console before its first launch. So the recipient needs internet access and enough storage; the card does not bring the already-downloaded game data along. Nintendo Australia and New Zealand’s FAQ
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
That supports ordinary physical lending or resale, but the cited Nintendo materials do not describe a dedicated resale process, digital lending feature, or specific legal resale policy. This practical answer is not a jurisdiction-specific statement about consumer law. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card feature is separate from the physical game-key card.
What happens to the save data?
Save data is stored on the console, not on the game-key card. Passing the card to another person therefore does not transfer the previous player’s save file. Nintendo also says the game data must be downloaded separately on another console even when the same card is used there. Nintendo’s FAQ

Before you travel, lend, or buy one
- Download first: the game cannot be played until its data is downloaded.
- Check storage: confirm the packaging’s stated requirement and make room on the console or a microSD Express card.
- Keep the card available: it must be inserted whenever you play.
- Check the title’s requirements: offline launching after setup does not guarantee that all modes or features work without internet.
- For another console: plan for a fresh download there; the card alone is not an installed copy.
Why Nintendo uses game-key cards
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described game-key cards as one of the distribution methods introduced to accommodate larger game-data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 than on Nintendo Switch. He summarized the format this way: “The game-key card used for Nintendo Switch 2 does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software. An internet connection is required for downloading the data for the game the first time you play it. Subsequent gameplay does not require an internet connection, but the game-key card must be inserted into the system.” The statement appears in Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders: Q&A Summary, Q16 (2025).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGame-key cards are a Nintendo Switch 2 format and are distinct from standard game cards. The practical trade-off is that a key card can move between consoles, but downloading the game data and keeping the physical card inserted are both part of using it.
