The original Nintendo Switch 2 has a 5,220 mAh internal battery that Nintendo classifies as not user-replaceable. Nintendo Customer Support can replace it for a fee. A revised Switch 2 listed by Nintendo UK has a 5,172 mAh battery that is user-replaceable, but its availability depends on country and exact hardware revision. Identify your console before buying a part or opening it.
Which Switch 2 battery does your console have?
Nintendo now describes two Switch 2 hardware versions. They are not interchangeable for the purposes of repair advice, and a procedure or battery intended for one revision should not be assumed to fit the other.

| Console version | Published battery specification | Nintendo’s position | What you should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch 2 | 5,220 mAh | Internal battery is not user-replaceable | Request a paid replacement through Nintendo Customer Support in your region |
| Revised European Nintendo Switch 2 | 5,172 mAh | Battery is user-replaceable | Confirm that your exact unit is the revised model and follow its model-specific instructions |
Nintendo UK says the revised battery has approximately 1% less capacity than the original. That small difference does not by itself identify a console: do not decide from runtime, weight, purchase date or country alone. Use the model information supplied with the console and Nintendo’s current specifications for your market. If the model is unclear, ask Nintendo support before ordering a battery or dismantling anything.

When is the revised model available?
Nintendo UK’s revision schedule lists October 2026 as the expected earliest availability of the revised console. “Expected earliest” is a schedule, not a guarantee that every retailer or European country has stock. The announcement applies to selected Nintendo products in Europe and does not establish that every Switch 2 sold in Europe has the revised battery. Availability and model distribution can differ by country.

What Nintendo says about the original console
Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 product announcement gives the original Switch 2 a 5,220 mAh internal battery and says its battery cannot be removed by the user. Nintendo’s stated remedy is paid service through Customer Support. In Nintendo’s wording: “Please note that the internal battery cannot be removed. If the battery needs to be replaced, it can be replaced for a fee via Nintendo Customer Support.”
This is not a universal price promise. Repair eligibility, quotation, shipping method, turnaround time, warranty treatment and regional terms can vary with your country, console condition and warranty status. Open your country’s Nintendo support portal and check the current Switch 2 repair process before sending the console. If the console is still under warranty, ask how an attempted third-party repair could affect that coverage before authorising any work.
What a support request normally needs
- The console’s exact model or serial information, as requested by your regional support site.
- A description of the symptom, such as rapid drain, failure to charge or unexpected shutdown.
- Your country and return address, because Nintendo’s service options are regional.
- Confirmation of whether the battery is swollen, hot, leaking or physically damaged. Report those conditions immediately rather than continuing normal use.
Do not ship a visibly damaged lithium-ion battery without following Nintendo’s instructions. Support can tell you how to package and transport a device with a battery fault.

How to tell whether replacement is actually needed
Nintendo estimates about 2 to 6.5 hours of battery life for the original Switch 2, depending on the game and usage conditions. Brightness, wireless features, software load, temperature and the particular game can all change the result. The range is a design estimate, not a pass/fail test for an individual battery.
A short session does not automatically mean the pack is worn out. First apply Nintendo’s battery-life improvement suggestions and observe whether the problem occurs across different games and charging conditions. A console that runs for less time only during a demanding game may be operating within the published range.
Symptoms that deserve service attention
- The console shuts down unexpectedly even though the indicator shows substantial charge.
- It will not charge, loses charge unusually quickly in standby, or becomes abnormally hot.
- The back cover, screen or controls appear to lift because the battery is swelling.
- There is a chemical smell, visible damage or evidence of liquid exposure.
None of these symptoms gives you a safe do-it-yourself diagnosis. They are reasons to stop using the console when practical and contact Nintendo or a suitably qualified repair service.

Can you replace the original battery yourself?
In a purely technical sense, an independent repair guide demonstrates that a Switch 2 battery can be reached and changed. That does not make the original console “user-replaceable” in Nintendo’s terminology. Nintendo explicitly directs owners to paid Customer Support replacement and warns against attempting to repair the battery.
An iFixit guide documents extensive disassembly for the Switch 2 hardware it covers. The visible procedure includes removing stickers and many screws, opening the rear cover, disconnecting antenna and microSD connections, and removing a shield plate before the battery work. Those steps require the correct tools, careful cable handling and a way to keep screws and shields organised. The guide is independent of Nintendo; it is evidence that a repair procedure exists for that covered hardware, not a recommendation from Nintendo and not proof that the revised console uses the same parts or sequence.
Risks of opening the console
- Damage to display, antenna, microSD, connector or shield components during disassembly.
- Puncturing, bending or shorting a lithium-ion cell, which can cause fire or thermal runaway.
- Loss of water, dust or mechanical protection if seals or covers are not restored correctly.
- Warranty or paid-service complications after unauthorised opening.
- Installing a battery whose connector, dimensions, firmware behaviour or safety characteristics do not match the exact revision.
Do not treat a replacement battery advertised for “Switch 2” as automatically compatible. The available material does not establish one universal part number for both revisions. Match the part to the exact model and use a supplier or technician that can document compatibility.

If your console is the revised user-replaceable model
Nintendo UK labels the revised Switch 2 battery as user-replaceable and says replacement kits will be available from the Nintendo Store in the future. The reviewed specifications do not establish a current kit listing, price or stock position, so check the Nintendo Store and support pages for your country at the time you need one.
- Confirm the revision. Use Nintendo’s current regional specifications and the model information on your unit or packaging. Do not rely on a generic listing or on the fact that the console was bought in Europe.
- Read the model-specific instructions. Nintendo’s general battery guidance says to check whether the particular product and model has a user-replaceable battery and then follow that model’s procedure.
- Prepare a safe workspace. Power the console down, disconnect accessories and work on a clean, nonconductive surface with appropriate lighting and a container for fasteners. Avoid metal tools that can bridge battery contacts.
- Use only a confirmed replacement. Verify the revision, connector, physical size and safety specifications before installation. If an official kit is unavailable, ask an authorised or qualified repair provider to confirm the part.
- Stop if the pack is swollen or damaged. A user-replaceable label does not make a damaged lithium-ion pack safe to handle. Arrange service instead of forcing it out.
- Test before closing everything permanently. Follow the model’s instructions for reconnection and charging checks. If the console becomes hot, smells unusual or behaves erratically, disconnect power when safe and seek service.
Those steps describe the decision process, not a substitute for the exact manual for your revision. Nintendo’s own instruction for a product with a user-replaceable battery takes precedence over a generic Switch 2 teardown.

Swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged battery: do not attempt removal
Nintendo safety guidance says: “Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery.” A swollen pack can reduce runtime, but swelling itself is the critical warning: pressure can damage the console and a puncture can ignite the cell.

Nintendo Japan advises service-centre replacement for a swollen battery. Its disposal guidance also says not to disassemble products with inaccessible batteries; follow local municipal or electronics-recycling instructions instead. Disposal rules differ by jurisdiction, so do not put a console with an inaccessible lithium-ion battery into ordinary household waste unless your local authority explicitly permits it.
Does a lower-capacity revised battery mean worse battery life?
The revised specification is 5,172 mAh versus 5,220 mAh for the original, approximately 1% lower according to Nintendo UK. Capacity alone cannot predict the hours you will get. Nintendo’s published 2–6.5-hour estimate is for the original console and is qualified by game and usage conditions; it should not be converted into a replacement threshold or used to infer the health of a revised unit.
There is no established universal battery lifespan or replacement interval for Switch 2 in the information available here. Replace a battery because the exact console and its service guidance call for it—not because a particular number of months has elapsed.
Choosing between Nintendo service and independent repair
| Option | Best fit | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Customer Support | Original non-user-replaceable console, warranty-sensitive owners, swelling or uncertain faults | Official diagnosis and model-specific service; regional handling instructions | Paid fee may apply; price and turnaround vary by country and condition |
| Qualified electronics repair service | Owners who cannot use Nintendo service and have verified a reputable, suitably equipped provider | May offer local logistics or a different turnaround | Authorisation, parts compatibility, warranty impact and liability must be verified locally |
| Self-repair using an independent guide | Experienced repairers working on a confirmed compatible revision | Potentially avoids shipping and gives hands-on control | High disassembly and battery-safety risk; not Nintendo’s recommended route for the original model |
No single repair price applies worldwide. Ask for a written quotation that identifies the model, battery part, labour, shipping and warranty on the repair. A provider that cannot identify the exact revision should not be trusted with the job.
Practical decision checklist
- Model verified? Confirm whether the unit is the original 5,220 mAh non-user-replaceable version or the revised 5,172 mAh user-replaceable version.
- Region verified? Check your country’s Nintendo support and store information; European availability is not uniform.
- Symptom documented? Record charging behaviour, shutdowns, heat and the games used, without treating the 2–6.5-hour estimate as a diagnostic limit.
- Damage ruled out? If the pack is swollen, leaking or physically damaged, do not open it.
- Service consequences understood? Confirm fee, turnaround, warranty and shipping terms before sending or opening the console.
- Part compatibility proven? Do not assume an independent guide or battery listing covers both revisions.
Bottom line
You cannot remove the battery from the original Nintendo Switch 2 as a normal user-maintenance operation: Nintendo lists its 5,220 mAh pack as non-user-replaceable and offers paid Customer Support replacement. A revised European model with a 5,172 mAh pack is listed as user-replaceable, with expected earliest availability from October 2026 subject to country and schedule changes. Identify the exact revision first, use Nintendo’s regional instructions, and treat swelling or damage as a service and disposal issue rather than a DIY project.
