Yes, mechanical keyboard switches can be replaced. The deciding question is how the switches connect to the keyboard’s PCB. On a hot-swappable board, sockets grip the switch pins, so you can pull out a switch and install a compatible one without soldering. On a soldered board, each switch is joined to the PCB with solder and must be desoldered before a replacement can be fitted.

Check the exact keyboard model, revision and switch technology before touching a switch. Mechanical and optical switches are not automatically interchangeable, and even two boards with similar names can use different hardware. The safest sequence is to confirm the board type in the manufacturer’s documentation, power the keyboard off, use the correct puller, and stop immediately if a switch does not release or insert smoothly.

What “hot-swappable” means

A keyboard switch has electrical pins that must connect to traces on the PCB. In a conventional board, those pins pass through holes in the PCB and are fixed with solder. Replacing the switch means melting and removing that solder, taking out the old switch, fitting the new one and soldering the new pins.

A hot-swappable PCB has a socket installed at each switch position. The socket sits around the PCB holes, grips the switch pins and contains conductive material that completes the circuit. The switch is held mechanically by its tabs rather than permanently soldered to the board. This makes individual switch changes practical for repairs, testing a different feel or replacing a worn key.

Hot-swap capability does not mean every switch will fit. The socket, switch technology, pin layout, mounting pins and keyboard firmware still determine compatibility.

How to find out whether your keyboard is hot-swappable

Check the exact model documentation first

Look at the product page, user manual and support page for the full model name and revision. The clearest wording is “hot-swappable sockets,” “hot-swap PCB” or an equivalent statement that switches can be replaced without soldering. Do not rely on a retailer’s abbreviated title when the manufacturer provides a model-specific specification.

Model variants can use different switch systems. NZXT’s compatibility guidance, for example, covers three specified Function mechanical models and explicitly excludes the Function 2 Optical Keyboard. A statement that one member of a product family is hot-swappable cannot be extended to every keyboard with a similar name.

Do not use a switch puller as proof

A puller included in the box, removable keycaps or a keyboard marketed as “customizable” does not by itself prove that the PCB is hot-swappable. Those accessories can be supplied with boards whose switches are soldered. Establish the board type from the exact documentation before pulling.

Inspect an opened board only when appropriate

If the keyboard is already open for legitimate service, look at the switch-pin holes on the PCB. A hot-swap socket is a small component seated around each hole and gripping the pins. On a soldered board, the switch pins are joined directly to the PCB with visible solder joints.

Opening a case can void a warranty, expose delicate cables or create a new damage risk. Do not remove the case solely to investigate unless you understand the keyboard’s construction and accept those risks. Never yank a switch to discover which type of board you have.

Compatibility check What to verify Why it matters
Switch technology Mechanical or optical Mechanical and optical switches use different sensing hardware. EPOMAKER warns that they are not interchangeable by default.
Keyboard model and revision Exact name, generation and regional or revision-specific documentation Manufacturers may use different PCBs or sockets within one product family.
Switch format The format listed for the board, such as MX-style Housing shape, stem and retaining tabs must match the plate and PCB.
Pin count and mounting Supported 3-pin or 5-pin arrangement, if specified Extra plastic alignment pins may collide with a PCB that lacks matching holes.
Sensor or contact design Compatible electrical or optical sensing method A switch can install physically yet fail to register if its sensing method is wrong.

Understanding 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches

In the common MX-style arrangement, a 3-pin switch has two metal electrical pins and one plastic center retention pin. A 5-pin version adds two plastic alignment pins, for five pins total. The extra pins improve positioning in compatible PCBs, but they do not create a universal rule that every 5-pin switch fits every hot-swap board.

Some boards are drilled for five pins; others accept only the two metal pins and center pin. A 5-pin switch may sometimes be adapted for a three-pin board by removing the extra plastic legs, but do not assume that modification is appropriate for your keyboard or that it preserves warranty coverage. Use the manufacturer’s stated support rather than a generic pin-count promise.

Mechanical versus optical switches

Mechanical boards detect an electrical contact made by metal switch components. Optical boards detect an interruption or change in a light path and use a different switch body and sensor arrangement. An optical switch that fits into the opening of a mechanical board, or vice versa, is not thereby compatible. The keyboard’s controller and PCB must support the same technology.

Safe procedure for replacing a switch on a confirmed hot-swap board

Prepare the replacement switch, a switch puller and, if needed, a keycap puller. Work on a clean, stable surface so a dropped switch or bent pin is easy to find.

  1. Power down completely. Unplug a wired keyboard. For a wireless model, turn it off and disconnect its charging or data cable. ASUS advises not replacing switches in the ROG Azoth while it is powered because a short circuit can occur.
  2. Remove the keycap. Use a keycap puller if the cap is tight. Pull vertically and keep the cap aligned with the stem; twisting can stress the stem or stabilizer on larger keys.
  3. Position the switch puller. Squeeze the puller so its jaws engage the switch’s retaining tabs, usually at the top and bottom of the switch housing. A puller that is touching only the housing can slip and scratch the plate.
  4. Lift gently and evenly. Pull straight up with modest pressure. If the switch resists, stop. Verify that the board is actually hot-swappable, that both retaining tabs are released and that the puller is seated correctly. Forcing a soldered switch can tear a PCB pad or break a socket.
  5. Compare the replacement. Confirm that it is the supported mechanical or optical type and the supported pin and mounting format. Place the old and new switches side by side. Check that every metal pin is straight and that plastic alignment pins are present or absent as required.
  6. Align before pressing. Match the switch’s retaining tabs with the plate opening and line each pin up with its socket hole. Look from directly above; a pin beside a hole can bend as soon as pressure is applied.
  7. Press straight down. Apply even pressure until the switch seats flush with the plate. It should enter smoothly. If it stops partway, remove it and inspect the pins rather than increasing force.
  8. Reinstall the keycap and test. Once the switch is seated, replace the keycap, reconnect or power on the keyboard and test the key in a text field or the keyboard’s configuration utility. Check both the key press and, where relevant, the key’s assigned function.

Razer’s support procedure, updated July 14, 2026, begins by identifying whether the PCB is hot-swappable or soldered. That check is not a formality: it determines whether pulling is an appropriate action at all.

What to do if the board is soldered

A soldered switch can still be replaced, but it is a repair operation rather than a pull-out swap. You must access the PCB, desolder the old switch’s joints, remove the switch without lifting a pad, install the compatible replacement and solder its pins. The work requires soldering equipment, careful heat control and appropriate soldering safety practices. Razer specifically recommends following soldering safety guidance for this process.

If you do not already have the tools and experience to desolder a multi-pin component, a keyboard repair shop or an experienced technician is safer than improvising. Excess heat can damage PCB traces; force can tear through-holes or pads. Disconnect the keyboard and any battery before opening it, and follow the manufacturer’s service and warranty terms.

Troubleshooting after a switch change

The switch will not come out

  • Stop pulling and confirm the exact model is documented as hot-swappable.
  • Make sure the puller is gripping both retaining tabs, not just the top of the housing.
  • Check for a solder joint. If the switch is soldered, it must be desoldered.
  • Inspect for a plate obstruction or stabilizer interference on larger keys.

The replacement will not enter the socket

  • Remove it and inspect every metal pin for bending.
  • Confirm that a 5-pin switch is allowed, or that the board requires a 3-pin arrangement.
  • Check that the switch is the correct mechanical or optical technology.
  • Align the housing and pins again; never hammer or force the switch into place.

The key does not register

  • Power off, remove the switch and inspect for a bent or broken pin.
  • Reinsert the switch straight down so both electrical pins enter the socket.
  • Test a known-good compatible switch in the same position. If multiple compatible switches fail there, the socket, PCB trace or firmware may be the problem.
  • On an optical board, verify that the replacement is the exact optical type specified for that model; a mechanical switch will not provide the required optical signal.

The key works intermittently

Intermittent input usually points to incomplete seating, a damaged pin or a loose hot-swap socket. Power down before reseating. If the socket itself moves or the problem returns with a known-good switch, stop repeated swapping and seek board-level repair.

When replacing switches makes sense

Replacement is useful when one switch has failed, when a particular key feels inconsistent or when you want to change the feel of a confirmed compatible hot-swap board. It is not a universal upgrade path: the plate, stabilizers, firmware, sensing technology and socket format all remain part of the keyboard.

Before buying a set, record the keyboard’s exact model and revision, the documented switch technology, the supported switch format and the permitted pin arrangement. Then buy only switches that satisfy every item. This checklist prevents the most expensive mistake in switch replacement: purchasing a physically similar component that the PCB cannot sense or safely accept.

The Bottom Line

Mechanical switches are replaceable on both hot-swappable and soldered keyboards, but only hot-swappable boards allow a safe pull-and-insert change. Verify the exact model’s documentation, match mechanical or optical technology and pin format, power off, and never force a switch that resists.
