Sometimes—but never assume. A laptop battery, RAM module, or SSD can be replaced by its owner only when the exact model was designed for that part to be serviced and you can follow its safety procedure. Some laptops have socketed memory, removable storage, or a manufacturer self-repair program. Others use soldered RAM, glued-in batteries, unusual drive formats, or technician-only procedures.
Identify the complete model number, read its official maintenance or self-repair guide, and confirm the approved part and tools before opening the case. The brand name alone is not enough: two generations that look almost identical can have completely different internal designs.

What determines whether a repair is possible?
Three questions decide the answer for any laptop:
- Is the component physically removable? RAM must be a socketed module rather than chips soldered directly to the motherboard. An SSD must use a removable connector or drive bay. A battery must have a serviceable pack and connector rather than being permanently bonded or covered by a technician-only procedure.
- Does the manufacturer support the repair? An official service manual or self-repair page should identify the part, its part number, required tools, and the permitted procedure. Microsoft’s Surface self-repair information, for example, lists components by device model and warns that parts and repair options vary by product and market.
- Can you perform the procedure safely? Tiny screws, fragile ribbon cables, adhesive, exposed battery cells, and static-sensitive electronics create risks even when a part is technically replaceable.
Never use a guide for a similar-looking laptop. Treat it as a different machine until the exact product number, revision, and service documentation match.

How to identify your exact laptop and its parts
Find the full model designation
Read the label on the underside, the original purchase record, or the operating system’s system-information panel. Record the complete product number, not merely a family name such as “Surface,” “ThinkPad,” or “Pavilion.” Include generation, screen size, CPU variant, and regional suffix when shown. A service guide for one configuration may not apply to another sold under the same family name.

Locate the official service documentation
On the manufacturer’s support site, search for “maintenance and service guide,” “hardware maintenance manual,” “repair guide,” or “self-repair.” Confirm that the document names your exact model. Microsoft’s Surface documentation lists eligible components by model; HP directs owners of eligible notebooks to the product maintenance and service guide; Apple distinguishes built-in Mac batteries from removable batteries on older models and limits its Self Service Repair program by model and region.
Build a parts-and-tools checklist
- Approved part number or an explicitly documented equivalent.
- Required screwdrivers and prying tools. An ASUS guide, for one particular laptop, calls for Torx T5/T6 and Phillips #000–#1 bits; your laptop may require different sizes.
- Antistatic precautions, such as a clean work surface and grounding method.
- Replacement adhesive, brackets, or thermal materials if the guide specifies them.
- A backup and a plan to reinstall or restore the operating system if storage is replaced.
Do not order a battery, RAM kit, or SSD from a generic compatibility list until the manufacturer’s documentation confirms the specification for your model.
Replacing laptop RAM yourself
When RAM can be upgraded
Upgradeable memory is normally installed as one or two small SODIMM modules. Some laptops provide a dedicated memory door; others require removal of the entire bottom cover. The general iFixit RAM guide describes both access patterns, but it is not a compatibility list. A laptop can have one removable module plus soldered memory, or soldered memory only.

Verify compatibility before opening the case
- Identify the memory technology (for example, the DDR generation) specified by the service manual.
- Check the maximum capacity and supported module sizes.
- Confirm the number of slots and whether an existing module must be removed.
- Match the required speed and voltage. A faster module may run at a lower supported speed, but do not rely on that behavior unless the documentation permits it.
- Check whether the laptop requires paired modules for a particular performance mode.
Typical replacement sequence
- Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and remove external devices.
- Follow the guide to remove the memory door or bottom cover. Keep screws grouped by location because lengths can differ.
- If instructed, disconnect the internal battery before touching memory.
- Release the side clips, lift the old module by its edges, and place it in an antistatic container.
- Align the notch on the new module with the slot, insert it at the documented angle, and press down until both clips lock.
- Reconnect the battery and covers, start the laptop, and verify the new capacity in firmware or the operating system.
If the laptop does not boot, power it off and reseat the module. Test one module at a time if two are installed, and return to the documented specification rather than forcing an unsupported capacity.
Replacing a laptop SSD yourself
Confirm the drive interface and physical fit
“SSD” describes the storage technology, not a universal shape. The exact laptop may accept an M.2 module with a particular key and length, a 2.5-inch SATA drive, or a less common proprietary board. Verify the connector, supported protocol, thickness, mounting screw, and clearance around the drive. A drive that fits the slot physically can still be incompatible with the laptop’s interface.
Microsoft lists removable SSDs for selected Surface devices. An iFixit guide for the Lenovo B50 demonstrates replacing a hard disk drive with an SSD. Those examples show that replacement is feasible on some models; they do not establish a universal interface, capacity, or procedure.

Protect your data before removal
Make a current backup of documents, photos, authentication codes, and any encryption-recovery key. A Lenovo hardware manual surfaced in manufacturer documentation specifically advises making a backup copy before drive removal. Decide whether you will clone the old drive, reinstall the operating system, or restore from a full image. The correct migration steps depend on the laptop and operating system, so obtain those instructions before disconnecting the original drive.
Typical replacement sequence
- Back up and, if applicable, record the recovery key and account credentials.
- Shut down completely, unplug power, and remove external devices.
- Open the case according to the exact guide and disconnect the internal battery if required.
- Remove the retaining screw or bracket, slide the old drive from its connector, and avoid touching contacts.
- Transfer any thermal pad, shield, bracket, or spacer the guide says to reuse.
- Install the replacement drive without bending it, secure it with the specified fastener, and reconnect the battery.
- Boot from the documented installation or recovery method, initialize or format the drive as required, and restore your data.

Stop conditions
HP’s replacement guidance states: “If a battery is swollen, damaged, or difficult to remove, discontinue the replacement and contact HP Support for assistance.” Follow that rule for any brand. Do not puncture, bend, crush, pry aggressively against cells, or pull on battery wires. A pack that is hot, leaking, deformed, or stuck is not a do-it-yourself job.
Verify the approved battery
- Match the exact model and battery part number.
- Use only an approved replacement specified by the manufacturer or service guide.
- Confirm that the connector, cell arrangement, and mounting points match.
- Check whether the program is available in your country and whether a qualified provider is required.
Typical replacement sequence for an eligible, undamaged pack
- Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and remove accessories.
- Work on a clean, static-controlled surface and use the specified precision bits.
- Open the case using the model-specific order; do not insert a tool where the guide does not permit it.

The laptop will not power on

New RAM is not recognized
Check that the module is fully latched, the memory type and capacity are supported, and the correct slot is being used. Test modules individually to distinguish a bad module from a slot or compatibility problem.
The SSD is missing or the system will not boot
Confirm that the drive is fully inserted and secured, that any bracket or thermal pad was transferred correctly, and that the replacement uses the documented interface. If the drive is detected but the system does not start, use the planned operating-system installation, clone, or recovery process rather than treating it as a hardware failure.
The battery is not charging
Power down and inspect the connector seating and approved part number. Follow the manufacturer’s post-repair charging instructions. Stop immediately if the pack becomes hot, deforms, smells unusual, or shows physical damage.

A Surface model with a removable SSD does not prove that every Surface model has one. A Lenovo B50 procedure for exchanging a hard disk for an SSD does not specify the drive layout of a newer Lenovo laptop. An ASUS precision-bit list applies to that documented machine, not to every ASUS design. Likewise, HP’s customer battery kit applies to eligible notebooks manufactured in 2025 or later, while Apple’s built-in-battery guidance may direct owners to qualified providers.
