Short answer: You cannot currently switch off or reverse cellular aging with a proven consumer treatment. Cellular senescence is one part of aging: senescent cells can accumulate and influence nearby tissue, yet they also support development, childbirth and wound healing. Human studies suggest that regular physical activity and some dietary approaches may improve selected biomarkers or health measures, but they have not demonstrated wholesale cellular rejuvenation or longer life. Senolytic drugs and supplements remain experimental and should not be used outside a clinical trial.
What cellular aging means
“Cellular aging” is an umbrella term for several processes that change cells over time. One is cellular senescence, a state in which a cell permanently stops dividing but remains metabolically active. Senescence can prevent damaged cells from multiplying. Senescent cells can also release signaling molecules that affect neighboring cells and the immune system.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains that the body becomes less efficient at clearing dysfunctional cells as it ages. As senescent cells accumulate, their secretions may contribute to tissue dysfunction and age-related disease. Calling them “zombie cells” that are always harmful is inaccurate, however. Senescence has useful roles during embryonic development, childbirth and wound healing. Removing every senescent cell would therefore be biologically unrealistic and potentially unsafe.

Changes in DNA regulation, proteins, mitochondria, immune function and tissue repair interact with one another. An intervention that changes one marker cannot automatically be described as reversing a person’s overall aging.

What human research can—and cannot—show
Studies of aging use different outcomes, and they are not interchangeable. Researchers may measure senescence-related proteins, mobility, disease-risk factors, biological-age scores or actual clinical events. A lower value on one laboratory test is not the same as fewer heart attacks, longer survival or rejuvenated tissue.
| Evidence or outcome | What it can indicate | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Cell or animal experiments | Possible mechanisms and treatment targets | Human safety, effectiveness or longevity |
| Senescence-related proteins | A biological signal associated with cellular aging | That senescent cells were removed or disease risk fell |
| Biological-age clock | A statistical estimate based on selected molecular data | That all cells became younger or lifespan increased |
| Mobility or other function | A clinically meaningful aspect of health | That a specific cellular mechanism caused the change |
| Randomized clinical outcome | Whether an assigned intervention changed a measured endpoint | Benefits for people unlike the study population or effects lasting decades |
The strongest conclusions come when a randomized study, an appropriate comparison group, validated measurements and meaningful health outcomes point in the same direction. Much anti-aging coverage instead combines laboratory findings with marketing language, which can make preliminary evidence sound definitive.
Does exercise slow cellular aging?
Physical activity is associated with better health and is being studied for effects on senescence-related biology. The NIA AgingResearchBiobank reports an analysis of the LIFE Study involving 1,377 women and men. Participants had been randomized to structured physical activity or a healthy-aging intervention.
What the LIFE Study analysis found
- The measured change in senescence biomarkers did not differ between the structured-activity and healthy-aging groups.
- Across the full cohort, higher activity levels were associated with greater reductions in some measured proteins at 12 months and/or 24 months.
- The association between activity and protein changes does not establish that exercise reversed cellular aging or that the proteins caused mobility changes.
The same research linked biomarker levels with mobility outcomes, which helps explain why scientists care about these signals. It still does not show that a particular workout, duration or intensity removes senescent cells. The practical evidence for exercise remains strongest for established benefits such as cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance, metabolic health and the ability to perform daily activities.

How to use this evidence safely
Choose activity that is appropriate for your current health and can be sustained: walking, cycling, swimming, resistance training, balance work or a combination. People with symptoms, chronic disease or a long period of inactivity should ask a clinician how to start. Exercise is a sound health behavior, but it should not be sold as a proven cellular-rejuvenation protocol.
Can fasting or calorie restriction reduce aging effects?
Fasting-mimicking diet trials
In an August 8, 2024 summary, the NIA described randomized trials of a fasting-mimicking diet involving 100 participants: 48 assigned to regular eating patterns and 52 assigned to the diet. The report described favorable changes in selected disease-risk factors and biological-age measures, and said some findings persisted after accounting for weight loss.
Those results are promising but limited. The trials were relatively small, and the NIA says longer-term effects and consistency across populations require more research. The report does not establish that the diet reduces senescent-cell burden, prevents disease over decades or extends lifespan. A short-term change in a biological-age measure should therefore be treated as an intermediate result, not a verdict on aging.
Calorie-restriction biomarker caveat
A separate NIA AgingResearchBiobank record summarizes a 2024 medRxiv preprint analysis of a small subset of 26 calorie-restriction participants. In that analysis, GlycAge—an IgG-based biological-age surrogate—was not different from baseline at 12 or 24 months. The record is a preprint and a biomarker analysis, not evidence that calorie restriction has no health value. It does show why results depend on the endpoint, sample size and study design: one biological-age measure may remain unchanged while another marker moves.

Risks and practical limits
Fasting or severe calorie restriction can be inappropriate for children, pregnant or breastfeeding people, anyone with a history of an eating disorder, and people taking medicines affected by food intake or blood glucose. Older adults and people with chronic conditions may need individualized nutrition advice. Do not infer a safe schedule, calorie target or commercial diet product from these studies.
Do senolytic drugs and supplements work in humans?
Senolytics are compounds intended to selectively eliminate senescent cells. The combination most often discussed in early research is dasatinib plus quercetin. Dasatinib is a leukemia chemotherapy drug; quercetin is a plant pigment. Their use as a senolytic approach is experimental, not an established anti-aging treatment.
The NIA says human safety has not been confirmed for routine senolytic use and advises against taking senolytics or similar supplements or drugs outside a clinical trial. Possible drug interactions, bleeding risk, immune effects and other harms cannot be dismissed because a compound is “natural” or because a small study reported a biomarker change.

What would count as convincing evidence?
- Well-designed randomized trials in adequately sized human populations.
- Validated evidence that the intervention changes senescent-cell biology, not merely an unvalidated proxy.
- Improvement in meaningful outcomes such as function, disease incidence or quality of life.
- Long-term monitoring for delayed toxicity, cancer, immune problems and interactions with standard treatment.
Until those conditions are met, a senolytic supplement is an unproven intervention with potential risk, not a preventive health product.

Chronological age counts years since birth. Biological age is an estimate derived from selected molecular or physiological measurements. The NIA’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget narrative notes that researchers have developed more than 50 molecular clocks, using data such as DNA changes, protein expression and microbiome composition.
Different clocks can produce different answers because they were trained on different populations, samples and outcomes. The NIA identifies validation of accurate measures of biological age and aging rate as an ongoing research need. A score from a consumer test is therefore not a diagnosis, a measure of every tissue or proof that an intervention made cells younger.

- Which molecules and tissues were measured?
- Was the clock validated in people like you and against a clinical outcome?
- What is the expected measurement error and normal fluctuation?
- Was the result compared with a randomized control group or only with your previous sample?
- Is there evidence that changing this score improves health?
Repeating a test can produce a different result because of laboratory variation, recent illness, sleep, diet or other factors. Do not change prescription treatment or pursue an unapproved supplement solely to lower a clock score.

What you can reasonably do now
No intervention has been proven to reverse cellular aging, but you can reduce established risks that damage tissues and accelerate functional decline.
- Be physically active. Build regular aerobic, strength and balance activity suited to your abilities. The LIFE Study findings make exercise relevant to senescence research, while its randomized comparison does not prove biomarker reversal.
- Use an adequate, sustainable eating pattern. Emphasize nutrient-dense foods and avoid extreme restriction. Fasting-mimicking diets remain a research subject, not a universal prescription.
- Manage diagnosed conditions. Blood pressure, diabetes, lipid disorders, sleep problems and smoking exposure have clearer links to health outcomes than any consumer aging score.
- Discuss supplements with a clinician or pharmacist. “Senolytic,” “anti-aging” and “natural” labels do not establish effectiveness or safety.
- Treat test results as information, not a verdict. Ask what was measured, how reliable it is and whether changing it improves a clinical outcome.
How to judge a new cellular-aging claim
Use this checklist before paying for a test, diet program or supplement:
- Is the evidence from humans, or only cells and animals?
- Was the study randomized, and what happened in the comparison group?
- Did researchers measure a health outcome or only a surrogate biomarker?
- How many people participated, and how long were they followed?
- Were harms and interactions actively monitored?
- Has an independent group reproduced the result?
- Does the claim promise reversal, detoxification or dramatic longevity from a single product?
If an advertisement answers none of these questions, its confidence is marketing rather than evidence.
What remains unknown
Researchers still need validated ways to measure senescent-cell burden across tissues, determine when senescence is beneficial or harmful, and connect molecular changes with outcomes people notice. Trials must also establish which populations benefit, how long benefits last and whether a treatment creates delayed risks. The existence of many molecular clocks underscores that measurement itself is unsettled.
For now, the evidence supports a careful distinction: healthy behaviors can improve important aspects of health and may influence some aging-related biomarkers, while no proven consumer intervention has been shown to reverse cellular aging. Experimental senolytics belong in regulated clinical research, not self-treatment.
