Can You Redownload Nintendo Switch Games After Deleting Them?

Yes. Deleting a digitally purchased Nintendo Switch game removes its installed software, not your purchase. You can download it again by loading its virtual game card with the Nintendo Account that bought or redeemed it.

The same basic process applies to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in Nintendo’s current US support instructions. You need an internet connection and enough free storage on the console or its microSD card.

How to redownload a deleted digital game

Use the account that originally purchased or redeemed the game. Nintendo ties the purchase to that Nintendo Account, so another user on the same console may see a price instead of a free download.

  1. Connect the console to the internet. Use a working Wi-Fi connection before opening the virtual game card.
  2. Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu. This is the current Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 menu for managing purchased digital games and downloadable content.
  3. Choose the purchasing user. Select the Nintendo Account that bought or redeemed the title. If several users are shown, do not choose based only on the profile name; use the account associated with the original purchase.
  4. Select the game. Highlight the deleted title in the virtual game card list.
  5. Choose “Load on This System.” If the software is not installed, its icon appears on the HOME Menu and the download starts. The console may take you back to the HOME Menu while the download continues.
  6. Wait for installation to finish. Keep the console connected and leave enough free space for the game and any required updates. When installation completes, start the game from its HOME Menu icon.

Loading a virtual game card is the normal redownload route for purchased games and DLC in Nintendo’s current instructions. Menu wording can change with system software updates, but the account-and-purchase relationship remains the key requirement.

What to do if the game is not in Virtual Game Cards

A missing title does not automatically mean the purchase is lost. Nintendo’s support path is to check the eShop and then confirm the purchasing account.

  1. Open Nintendo eShop and select the user who may have made the purchase.
  2. Search for the game or DLC.
  3. Check the product page for a Virtual Game Cards or Purchased indication. Those labels mean the account currently browsing owns the item.
  4. If the page instead shows Proceed to Purchase or a price, stop before paying. Switch to the account that made the original purchase and check again.
  5. Review purchase history on the console or through the Nintendo Account website. A purchase record identifies the account that should be used for the redownload.
  6. If the purchase record exists but the title still cannot be loaded, contact Nintendo Support with the account and purchase details.

Only the account that purchased a game can download it at no cost. Being on the same console, sharing a family group, or using a different local user does not by itself transfer ownership to another Nintendo Account.

Why does Nintendo eShop still show a price?

The most common explanation is that eShop is open under a different user from the one that bought the game. A price or “Proceed to Purchase” button is a signal to verify the account, not an instruction to buy a second copy.

Check the account first

Return to the HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards, and select each relevant user until you find the account with the title. You can also sign in to the Nintendo Account website and inspect purchase history. The account listed on that transaction is the one that must load the virtual game card.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Check whether the original transaction was completed

If no purchase record appears, confirm that the game was actually bought or redeemed on that Nintendo Account. A download that was started but never purchased, a demo, or a subscription-based entitlement may not appear as an owned game.

Contact support when the record and entitlement disagree

Nintendo directs customers to support when a purchase is present but the game remains unavailable. Keep the Nintendo Account email, title, approximate purchase date, and transaction information available so support can locate the entitlement.

Deleting software is different from deleting save data

On Nintendo Switch, “deleting” can refer to installed game software or to save data. They are separate actions with different consequences.

Delete software Software data is removed to free storage. Removed from the HOME Menu. Nintendo says the action does not impact save data.

Archiving or deleting downloadable software therefore does not erase the game’s save data. Deleting the software and deleting save data are not the same command. If you want to preserve progress, avoid the separate save-data deletion option in the console’s data-management settings.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

After archiving, the existing HOME Menu icon gives you a convenient way to start the download again. After deleting, use Virtual Game Cards or Nintendo eShop to locate the title and load it.

Do you need a microSD card?

No. A microSD card is optional for redownloading. The console’s internal storage is sufficient if it has enough free space for the game and its updates.

When a microSD card is inserted, Nintendo says it is the default destination for downloads and redownloads. You can use one to add capacity when internal storage is full, but buying a card is not a prerequisite for restoring a deleted title.

If a download will not start, check available space in the console’s data-management settings and remove or archive other software if necessary. Deleting software to make room does not, by itself, remove that game’s save data.

Games, demos, DLC and Nintendo Switch Online content

The Virtual Game Cards flow is intended for purchased digital games and downloadable content. Some categories are handled through different menus:

  • Most demos: Find and download them through Nintendo eShop rather than treating them as purchased virtual game cards.
  • Nintendo Switch Online classic game libraries: Download the relevant classic-game application through Nintendo eShop, then access the library through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
  • Subscription-exclusive DLC and game trials: Access can depend on an active Nintendo Switch Online entitlement and may be managed through Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo eShop instead of the purchased-game list.

If an item came from a subscription or trial, check that service’s current entitlement before assuming it should appear as a permanently purchased game. A subscription benefit is different from an individual eShop purchase.

Common problems and the correct response

The download button is unavailable

Confirm that the console is online, select the purchasing user in Virtual Game Cards, and make sure the title is not already installed. If storage is low, free space by archiving or deleting software, then try “Load on This System” again.

The game icon appears, but the download does not progress

Check the internet connection and available storage. Leave the console connected while the download runs. If the issue continues, restart the download from the title’s virtual game card and verify that the selected user is still the purchaser.

The title is absent from the list

Search Nintendo eShop while signed in as the suspected purchasing account. Look for the “Virtual Game Cards” or “Purchased” indication. If neither appears, inspect purchase history on the console or Nintendo Account website.

A family member purchased the game

Use the family member’s Nintendo Account to load the virtual game card. A local profile that did not make the purchase cannot independently claim a free redownload merely because it uses the same Switch.

You deleted the wrong thing

If you removed only the software, the save data should remain according to Nintendo’s support guidance, and you can redownload the game. If you separately deleted save data, that is a different operation; reinstalling the software will not recreate save data that was intentionally removed.

Switch and Switch 2 menu differences

Nintendo’s current support material covers both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The exact placement or wording of menus may vary by system software version, so look for Virtual Game Cards, the purchasing user, and the “Load on This System” command. If your screen uses a slightly different label, update the console and follow the equivalent virtual-game-card or purchased-content option.

The underlying rule is unchanged: the digital entitlement belongs to the Nintendo Account that completed the purchase or redemption, while deleting installed software only removes the local copy. When the title is missing or priced, account selection and purchase history are the first checks; Nintendo Support is the escalation path when those checks confirm ownership but the download remains unavailable.

Quick Recap

A quick redownload checklist

  • Connect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet.
  • Open Virtual Game Cards from HOME.
  • Select the Nintendo Account that purchased or redeemed the game.
  • Choose the title and select Load on This System.
  • Confirm that the game icon appears and that the download has enough storage.
  • If the title is missing or priced, check eShop under the purchasing account and review purchase history.
  • Use Nintendo Support if a confirmed purchase still cannot be redownloaded.
