Yes—but only if the specific token and route support redemption. WBTC and Threshold’s tBTC use different mechanisms. WBTC’s documented direct route runs through an authorized merchant: the merchant receives and burns WBTC, then the custodian releases an equivalent amount of native Bitcoin. tBTC is burned through the Threshold app, which sends native BTC to a Bitcoin address you control without an authorized merchant, account, or KYC for that route. “Tokenized Bitcoin” is a category, not a single asset. Before sending anything, copy the asset name and contract address from your wallet, identify the network holding it, and confirm whether the route you intend to use supports that exact combination. WBTC on Ethereum is not handled exactly like tBTC on Arbitrum, Base, Starknet, Sui, or another deployment.

How direct WBTC redemption works
Merchant and custodian flow
For direct redemption, an authorized merchant accepts your WBTC. The WBTC is received and burned, reducing the token supply. The custodian then releases an equivalent amount of BTC to the merchant’s specified Bitcoin destination. The whitepaper describes minting and burning as arrangements between trusted institutions, so an individual holder normally interacts with the merchant or another supported provider rather than operating the custodian process directly.
The WBTC FAQ also lists centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and on-chain protocols as conversion venues. Those are separate routes: a swap or exchange withdrawal should not be described as the same thing as a merchant burn followed by custodian release.
Practical steps
- Verify the asset and chain. Confirm that your wallet contains WBTC on a network accepted by the selected merchant or venue. Check the contract address against the provider’s current documentation.
- Choose a supported route. A merchant may require an application, an account, identity checks, or a minimum amount. An exchange or DEX has its own deposit, trading, and withdrawal rules.
- Read the quote and destination details. Confirm how much BTC you will receive after merchant, custodian, trading, withdrawal, and network charges. Make sure the destination is a Bitcoin address, not an address on the token’s smart-contract network.
- Send only the requested amount. Use the exact network and deposit address supplied by the provider. A transfer on the wrong chain can be difficult or impossible to recover.
- Wait for both legs to complete. The WBTC burn and the BTC release are separate operational events. Keep the transaction ID and any merchant reference until the BTC is visible in your Bitcoin wallet.
A WBTC press release describes a merchant process that includes AML/KYC checks followed by an atomic swap or trusted exchange. A market route can be simpler when you already use a venue that supports WBTC. You trade WBTC for BTC, a BTC-linked asset, or another cryptocurrency, then withdraw if the venue permits Bitcoin withdrawals. The result depends on the pair and withdrawal option. A DEX swap may return another on-chain token; it does not automatically send native BTC over the Bitcoin network.

- Confirm whether “BTC” in the interface means native Bitcoin or a token representing BTC on that network.
- Review price impact, liquidity, swap fee, gas cost, and any withdrawal fee before signing.
- Verify that the withdrawal screen accepts a Bitcoin address and states the network explicitly.
Because the venue sets its own terms, the WBTC sources do not supply one universal retail fee, minimum, or completion time for exchange conversions.
How direct tBTC redemption works
Protocol route
Threshold describes a permissionless route in which the holder burns tBTC through the Threshold app and enters a Bitcoin address under the holder’s control. The signer set then releases native BTC to that address at a 1:1 ratio before fees. Threshold says this route does not require an authorized merchant, an account, or KYC.
The page lists Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Starknet, and Sui as supported networks at the time reviewed. Deployments can change, so check the app’s current network selector before moving funds.
Step-by-step
- Open the Threshold app from the official site. Check that the connected wallet and selected deployment chain match the tBTC you hold.
- Connect your wallet. Review the token contract and balance shown by the app. Do not approve a similarly named or unverified token.
- Enter a Bitcoin address you control. Confirm every character and use the address format accepted by the app. A Bitcoin transaction cannot generally be reversed after broadcast.
- Review the fee and net amount. Threshold states a 0.2% mint and redemption fee. The app should show the transaction details and any additional network costs before confirmation.
- Approve and burn tBTC. Sign the token approval and burn transaction on the deployment chain. Keep the on-chain transaction hash.
- Monitor the Bitcoin release. The signer set must process the request and send BTC to the supplied address. Wait for the Bitcoin transaction and its confirmations before treating the redemption as complete.
Threshold says staking T can partially or fully offset the stated fee through the Threshold Unified Bitcoin Router, with waivers applied automatically when the applicable conditions are met. That fee-offset description is specific to tBTC and should not be applied to WBTC or other tokenized-Bitcoin products.

Fees: what you may actually pay
There is no single “tokenized Bitcoin redemption fee.” The charge depends on the mechanism and the provider. The documented categories are:

The WBTC whitepaper says transfers between users have no WBTC transfer charge beyond network fees. That statement does not mean a merchant, exchange, custodian, or withdrawal provider will charge nothing for redemption. Request a current quote immediately before signing.
Timing: what is and is not published
Do not promise a fixed redemption time based on the available documentation. The reviewed WBTC materials do not provide a general consumer estimate for merchant redemption. Threshold’s page gives a one-to-two-hour estimate for minting, depending on Bitcoin confirmations; it does not present that estimate as the time required to redeem tBTC.
Actual completion can involve several clocks: the token-chain transaction, any provider review, signer or custodian processing, Bitcoin transaction broadcast, and Bitcoin confirmations. A congested network, a delayed provider, an incorrect address, or a request outside a provider’s operating limits can extend the process. Keep the transaction hashes and use the route’s status page or support channel if the published workflow stalls.

Before committing funds, verify every item below with the route provider. None of these conditions is universal across all tokenized-Bitcoin products.
- Asset: exact token name and contract address.
- Network: chain where the token currently resides and chain supported by the route.
- Output: native BTC on the Bitcoin network versus another token or an exchange balance.
- Minimum and maximum: the provider’s current transaction limits.
- Identity: whether AML/KYC, an account, or geographic screening applies.
- Address format: the Bitcoin address types accepted by the interface.
- Fees: the full quote, including token-chain gas, provider charges, spread, and Bitcoin withdrawal costs.
- Timing: expected processing stages, confirmation requirements, and what happens if a request expires.
- Support: how to open a ticket and which transaction IDs the provider needs.
The WBTC press release specifically describes AML/KYC in its merchant path. Threshold states that its described tBTC redemption does not require KYC. Neither source establishes a universal minimum amount, jurisdiction list, or time guarantee for every route.

Common failure points and safer decisions
You sent the token on the wrong network
Stop making additional transfers. Save the transaction hash, the sending and receiving addresses, and the selected network. Contact only the route’s official support channel; recovery may depend on whether the provider controls the destination wallet.
The quote is lower than expected
Check whether the displayed amount subtracts the protocol fee, gas, a merchant charge, slippage, or a Bitcoin withdrawal fee. Compare the net BTC amount, not the headline exchange rate.
The app asks for an address you do not control
Do not proceed. Direct tBTC redemption is described as sending to a Bitcoin address under your control. For any route, verify the address independently before signing.
A swap produced a token instead of BTC
That is a market conversion, not necessarily a direct redemption. Confirm which asset you received and whether a separate, supported withdrawal path can deliver native BTC.
The transaction is pending
Check the token-chain explorer first, then the provider’s status information, and finally the Bitcoin transaction explorer once a BTC transaction ID exists. Avoid submitting a duplicate request unless the provider explicitly says the first one failed or expired.
Bottom line for choosing a route
Use the WBTC merchant path when you need the documented burn-and-custodian process and can satisfy that merchant’s current onboarding and limits. Use the Threshold app only for tBTC on a currently supported deployment and budget its stated 0.2% redemption fee unless an applicable staking offset reduces it. Use an exchange or DEX when you understand that you are trading, not necessarily invoking a protocol redemption, and confirm that the final withdrawal is native BTC. In every case, verify the token, chain, destination address, net amount, and current provider terms before signing.
