The official support instructions reviewed here describe SIM operations for contacts, while photo backup guidance covers a separate memory card. To find old pictures, check the original phone, any microSD card it used, and photo accounts or computer backups associated with it.
What a SIM card can—and cannot—tell you
Apple, Google and Samsung support pages describe SIM-card workflows for contacts, not photo extraction. Apple states, “Your iPhone doesn’t store contacts on the SIM card.” That statement concerns contacts; it is not itself evidence about photo storage. The official guidance reviewed here does not provide a procedure for retrieving pictures from a SIM.

A SIM and a microSD card are different things. A SIM connects a phone to a mobile network; a microSD card is removable storage that some phones can use for files and photos. People sometimes call either small card “the SIM,” so identify which one you actually have before trying a recovery method. A SIM reader will not retrieve images saved on a microSD card, and a microSD reader does not access a SIM’s contacts.

- The SIM only: The official instructions reviewed cover contacts, not photos. If you meant contacts, use the appropriate phone’s supported SIM-contact import feature.
- The old phone: Check its photos or gallery app and file storage. If it still works, identify whether the camera saved pictures to internal storage or a removable memory card.
- A separate microSD card: Confirm the card type and that the phone or reader supports it. A compatible reader can help access files on a memory card, but cannot read a SIM.
- Neither phone nor card is available: Check photo accounts and computer backups that were used with the old device. What can be recovered depends on the device and backup configuration.
Check the original phone and memory card
If you still have the phone
Open the phone’s photos or gallery app and look for the missing images. Also check the device’s file storage and determine whether the camera was set to save to internal storage or a removable card. The exact menus and storage options depend on the model; there is no single path that applies to every phone.

If you have a microSD card
Use a device with a compatible card slot or a reader that supports that card type. AT&T’s model-specific support guide describes backing up and restoring photos and files with a memory card; it does not establish compatibility for every phone or card. Confirm the card type and reader connection before using one, and do not mistake a SIM for a memory card.
If the phone or card is damaged
If the device still powers on or files are still accessible, preserve what you can before attempting anything that might change the storage. For a damaged or inaccessible device or card, seek help specific to its model and condition. Recovery possibilities depend on what is damaged; no universal method or success rate is established here.

Look for a photo backup
Search the photo account or computer backup associated with the old phone. Backup availability depends on what was enabled and which account or computer was used. Google’s Android help separates contact restoration from its linked photo-backup guidance; it does not establish one universal photo-recovery procedure for every device or service. 1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSIM contact import is a separate task
If the card contains contacts you want, rather than photos, use the supported contact-import workflow for the phone. These instructions import contacts only and do not recover pictures.

Choose the next step by storage location
| What you have | Where to look | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| SIM card only | Use contact-import instructions if you need contacts; do not expect photo extraction. | Apple, Google and Samsung instructions reviewed address contacts, not photos. |
| Old phone | Check its photos app, file storage and configured save location. | Exact steps depend on the model and settings. |
| Separate microSD card | Use a compatible phone or reader to inspect the card. | AT&T documents photo and file backup with memory cards for supported devices; compatibility is model-specific. |
| Cloud or computer backup | Check the account or computer used with the old phone. | Whether pictures are available depends on the backup configuration. |
Why the distinction matters
A request to recover pictures from an “old SIM” may actually mean the person has a microSD card or a broken old handset. For example, one community post asks how to recover photos from an “ancient sim,” but that phrasing is not technical evidence about where the photos were stored. Identify the phone and card before choosing a recovery route. Reddit discussion
For additional consumer context, Cintex Wireless also discusses SIMs and photo storage: Does a SIM card store photos?
