Sometimes, but recovery is uncertain. A blockchain transfer normally cannot be reversed by you or a private recovery company. Funds may still be recovered when investigators trace them to an exchange or custodian that can freeze an account, or when law enforcement and courts obtain and return the assets. Your best chance is to report immediately, preserve complete transaction evidence, notify the affected protocol and relevant exchanges through verified channels, and avoid anyone promising guaranteed recovery for an upfront fee.
What “recovery” can actually mean
After a liquidity-pool exploit, three different outcomes are often confused:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Tracing: documenting where tokens moved on the blockchain. A tracing report can be useful evidence, but it does not put money back in your wallet.
- Freezing: stopping an account or custodial balance before the attacker can withdraw or move it again. An exchange may act under its internal procedures or in response to legal process.
- Recovery: the lawful return of seized or restrained assets to victims, a company, a bankruptcy trustee or another claimant.
Private investigators and blockchain-analytics firms cannot issue seizure orders. The FBI specifically warns that private-sector recovery companies cannot compel an exchange to surrender cryptocurrency. A settled on-chain transaction remains settled; only a custodian with control of the destination account, or a government process such as seizure and forfeiture, can create a practical path to return.

- Stop interacting with the suspected exploit or scam. Disconnect from suspicious sites, reject new wallet prompts and do not send additional funds to “unlock” a refund. Use only contact details published through the protocol’s verified website or official social accounts.
- Preserve the transaction record. Save every transaction hash, sending and receiving address, blockchain network, token symbol, amount, timestamp, pool or contract address and relevant block-explorer link. Take screenshots before a website, post or chat is deleted.
- Build a timeline. Record when you connected your wallet, what you approved or signed, when the balance changed, and every subsequent contact. Keep emails, direct messages, phone numbers, domains, application links and payment requests in their original form.
- Report promptly. In the United States, the FBI directs victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or to a local FBI field office. Its guidance says, “Do not wait,” and asks for addresses, cryptocurrency type, amount, date, time and transaction ID or hash. Submit what you have even if some details are missing.
- Notify the protocol and custodians. Send a concise incident summary to the affected project and to any centralized exchange or custodian that appears in the transaction trail. Include the hashes and your law-enforcement report number when available. Ask for preservation or review; do not claim that staff can reverse a confirmed transaction.
- Protect assets that remain. If a wallet approval or private-key compromise is possible, move unaffected assets to a newly generated wallet using official security guidance. Review and revoke unnecessary token allowances through a trusted interface. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to an investigator, lawyer or “recovery agent.”
- Get jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A lawyer experienced in digital-asset disputes can assess civil claims, emergency injunctions, subpoena options and bankruptcy proceedings. Litigation can be expensive and may not produce a recovery, so ask about likely cost and collectability before retaining counsel.
Which recovery route has authority?
| Route | Who has authority | Evidence to provide | What must still be true | Geography and timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reporting and evidence preservation | Law-enforcement agency receiving the complaint | Addresses, token and amount, date and time, transaction hash, communications, websites and a timeline | Investigators must be able to identify and reach the assets or responsible parties | Follow the process in your country; the FBI says to report promptly and not wait |
| Exchange or custodian freeze | The exchange under its internal rules, or a court or law-enforcement order | Blockchain trail, account identifiers, fraud details and a report number when available | The assets must have reached a service that can control the account before they are withdrawn or moved | Depends on the service, its jurisdiction and legal process |
| Civil litigation | A court, acting on a claimant’s application | Proof of ownership or loss, transaction records and evidence connecting defendants to the funds | A viable defendant, jurisdiction and assets that can be reached or enforced against | Lawyer-led and jurisdiction-specific; success and economics vary |
| Criminal seizure and civil forfeiture | Law-enforcement agencies and courts | Evidence supporting the investigation and the chain of custody for seized assets | Authorities must locate, seize and legally forfeit the assets | Can span countries and chains; timing is controlled by investigation and court proceedings |
A private analyst can help organize addresses and explain transaction flows, but that service is evidence support, not a seizure mechanism. Be especially cautious when a company sells a glossy tracing report and then demands another payment to “release” funds.

A real example: the SafeMoon liquidity-pool case
In June 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice described a recovery connected to a SafeMoon liquidity-pool exploit. The FBI seized cryptocurrency held in exchange accounts, and the United States pursued civil asset forfeiture. The Justice Department said the assets were being returned to the company’s bankruptcy trustee.
The release identified $680,467.92 and 480.996 BNB seized from exchange accounts in 2023. It said the recovered property represented approximately half of the 20 percent of stolen cryptocurrency that had been extorted by a front-running bot operator. This demonstrates a possible chain of events—tracing, exchange seizure, forfeiture and an authorized return—but it is a case-specific result, not a recovery guarantee or a published success rate.
Why another case may be much harder
A December 2024 Justice Department indictment alleged that an attacker stole approximately $65 million from KyberSwap and Indexed Finance liquidity pools, attempted extortion and moved proceeds through bridges and a mixer. Cross-chain transfers, intermediaries and privacy-enhancing services can create multiple investigative jurisdictions and delay identification of the person controlling the funds.

The indictment contains allegations, not a conviction; the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case is useful for understanding investigative complexity, not for predicting that every exploit will end in recovery.
Do not turn an exploit into a second loss
The FBI reports that supposed recovery specialists approach victims through social media, messaging apps, online advertisements and comment sections. Common warning signs include:
- an unsolicited message claiming to be from the FBI, a court, an exchange or a lawyer;
- a promise of guaranteed recovery or a precise success percentage;
- an upfront “tax,” “processing,” “gas,” “bond” or retainer payment before any official action;
- a request for your seed phrase, private key, exchange password, identity documents or remote computer access;
- a tracing report followed by escalating fees to “unlock” or “repatriate” assets.
Law-enforcement agencies do not charge victims to investigate a crime. Verify any claimed FBI affiliation through a local field office, not through a phone number or link supplied by the stranger. Do not pay an unsolicited recovery agent, and preserve the message as evidence.

A separate fraud pattern involves a fake liquidity-mining application. The victim is persuaded to grant broad token permissions, after which a scammer-controlled address drains assets. The FBI has warned that paying more money does not reclaim those funds and recommends periodically checking token allowances. This is different from a vulnerability in a protocol’s smart contract: the response may involve revoking approvals and securing the wallet as well as reporting the theft.

How to make a useful report
Organize your submission so an investigator can follow the money without guessing:
- Use one line per transaction with the network, hash, timestamp, token and amount.
- Identify your wallet and every destination address you can see, labeling exchanges, bridges, mixers, contracts and unknown wallets separately.
- Include the pool or contract address and the transaction that first changed your balance.
- Attach screenshots and exportable chat or email records, preserving dates and sender information.
- Write a short narrative that separates what you personally observed from what another person told you.
- Add the names of any exchange, protocol or service you already contacted and the ticket numbers you received.
If you do not have every transaction detail, report with what is available. The FBI’s victim guidance specifically says missing information should not be a reason to delay. Outside the United States, use the cybercrime or financial-crime reporting route designated by your national or regional authorities, and ask a local lawyer which court and regulator have jurisdiction.

What affects the possibility of recovery?
- Speed: A notification made while assets remain at a compliant exchange is more actionable than one made after repeated withdrawals and swaps.
- Traceability: Public ledgers preserve movements, but tracing becomes harder when funds cross chains, pass through many addresses or enter services designed to obscure flows.
- Custody: An exchange can potentially freeze an account it controls; a self-custodied wallet cannot be frozen by a victim’s email request.
- Proof: Hashes, timestamps, approvals and communications let authorities distinguish a protocol exploit from a user-authorized transfer or a phishing event.
- Jurisdiction: The relevant exchange, attacker, victims and blockchain infrastructure may be in different countries, each with different disclosure and forfeiture rules.
- Solvency and ownership: Even a successful judgment is difficult to collect if assets are gone, mixed with other property or claimed by competing creditors.
What the available statistics do—and do not—show
The FBI cited Chainalysis figures stating that $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency was stolen between January and March 2022, with almost 97 percent coming from DeFi platforms. The comparable DeFi shares cited for 2021 and 2020 were 72 percent and 30 percent. Those are historical theft figures, not a current exploit rate or a probability that an individual victim will recover funds.
The FBI also reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses reported by victims in 2022. Investment fraud is a broader category than a DeFi liquidity-pool exploit and should not be presented as an exploit-loss total. The official materials reviewed here provide no general recovery percentage. The SafeMoon result is an example of what official action can achieve, not a basis for calculating odds.

Once evidence is preserved and reports are filed, rotate credentials for connected services, remove unneeded wallet approvals, update devices and review every application that requested signing access. Create a new wallet for unaffected holdings rather than continuing to use a wallet whose private key may have been exposed. Store the recovery phrase offline and never enter it into a website or share it with a person who claims to be helping.
Keep a permanent incident file containing hashes, addresses, screenshots, reports, exchange tickets and legal correspondence. If an exchange later contacts you about a freeze or verification request, confirm the message through the exchange’s independently typed official domain before responding.
