Sometimes—but recovery from an SSD is uncertain. When you delete a file, the file system marks its space as available; on supported systems, it can also tell the SSD that the freed space no longer needs to be preserved. TRIM lets the drive reclaim those ranges, which can make undelete scans come up empty. It does not establish that every deleted file is instantly wiped on every SSD.
What happens when you delete a file from an SSD?
Deletion first changes file-system allocation information: the file’s space is marked as free. On a supported setup, the operating system may also send the SSD a TRIM or delete-notification hint for the freed ranges. Microsoft describes this as a notification that the device can purge data in those ranges (Microsoft’s fsutil behavior documentation).

SSD flash storage is managed in erase blocks, so the drive handles reclamation separately from the file-system action that removes a file from view. TRIM allows the device to treat notified ranges as no longer needed; it is not proof that every drive immediately wipes every deleted block. Timing and behavior can depend on the operating system, file system, connection, controller, and firmware.

Why undelete tools often find nothing
Traditional undelete tools look for data that remains in space the file system has marked as free. If the SSD has acted on a TRIM notification and reclaimed the relevant data, that approach may have little or nothing to recover. Continued computer use can also write to free space that might otherwise still contain recoverable data. Microsoft specifically warns that this is possible, especially on an SSD (Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance).

That does not mean every deletion is instantly unrecoverable or that every recovery application always fails. Results depend on whether the data remains, the circumstances of deletion, and the storage setup. There is no supported universal recovery percentage or fixed interval after which TRIM wipes a file.
What to do after deleting a file
- Stop using the affected computer as much as practical. Avoid unnecessary downloads, installs, updates, and other writes that could use free space. This cannot reverse data already reclaimed, but it may reduce the chance of overwriting data that remains.
- Check backups and earlier versions first. If File History was configured before the deletion and included the file, use it to restore an earlier copy. Windows File History can use external storage as a backup destination (Microsoft’s File History instructions).
- If using Windows File Recovery, save recovered files to a different drive. Microsoft says not to recover files to the same drive they were lost from. Its guidance describes Regular mode for recent deletions on NTFS and Extensive mode for older NTFS deletions, formatting, corruption, or non-NTFS file systems. The utility does not recover data from cloud storage or network file shares (Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance).
- Set expectations before scanning. A scan may locate files, but it cannot guarantee recovery. Microsoft cautions that free space may already have been overwritten, particularly on an SSD.
Choose the recovery path that fits
| Situation | Best first step | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A backup or File History copy exists from before deletion | Restore the earlier copy from the backup location. | File History helps only if it was configured and included the relevant files (Microsoft). |
| Recent deletion on an NTFS drive, with no backup copy | Consider Windows File Recovery’s Regular mode. | Recovery is not guaranteed; continued use can overwrite free space (Microsoft). |
| Older NTFS deletion, formatting, corruption, or a non-NTFS file system | Consider Windows File Recovery’s Extensive mode. | Save results to a different drive; the tool does not recover cloud or network-share data (Microsoft). |
| No backup, and SSD undelete scans return nothing | Avoid further writes and assess whether professional recovery is appropriate for the value of the files. | Whether anything remains recoverable cannot be determined from the SSD label alone. |
How to reduce the risk next time
Set up backups before files go missing. File History can use an external drive as a destination; a separate external drive can also serve as a backup location. A backup copy made before deletion is a more dependable recovery route than hoping an SSD undelete scan will find data the device may have reclaimed. It cannot restore data already purged from the laptop’s SSD.
