Usually, no. Discord says a message manually deleted by its author is no longer stored in Discord and will not appear in that account’s Data Package. The export can show messages that remain in the account record; it is not an undelete tool. A server logging bot may preserve a message only if it was already installed, had the necessary access, and recorded the content before deletion.
Can you see deleted messages on Discord?
There is no end-user undelete workflow in the Discord Support material. For a manually deleted message, Discord’s guidance is explicit: “If you manually delete a message – it is no longer stored in Discord and therefore will not be included in your Data Package.” See Your Discord Data Package.

Discord says deleted content is no longer available to other users and is deleted from its systems. It notes that cached uploads may take time to clear, but that is not a supported way to retrieve message text or attachments. Discord also describes limited retention for legal, safety, and security purposes; those exceptions do not provide users a method to restore the deleted message. No, not if you manually deleted the message. The package is a ZIP of account data requested through User Settings. Its Messages folder can include messages you sent, organized into direct messages, group messages, and channels; JSON records may contain a message ID, timestamp, content, and attachment links. But Discord expressly excludes manually deleted messages.

To request the package, open Discord’s User Settings and use the Data & Privacy controls to request your data. Discord says delivery may take up to 30 days, and the download link remains active for 30 days. These are package delivery and download periods, not a recovery grace period. Discord also says a request is canceled if the account is disabled or deleted before the link arrives. Check Discord’s current Data Package instructions for the exact interface and steps.
An export can still help when you are looking for messages that remain represented in your account’s records. It does not restore content deleted before the package is prepared.

What if someone else deleted the message?
If another user deleted their message and no authorized server-side logger captured it beforehand, the sources reviewed do not establish a way for you to restore or view it. Discord’s deletion guidance does not offer an end-user recovery path. Do not assume that a moderator, support request, cached upload, or data export can bring the text back.

If the message matters for a safety or policy report, preserve evidence you already have—such as a notification, screenshot, or other lawful record—and use Discord’s reporting or support channels where appropriate. Discord’s published retention exceptions do not promise that staff can retrieve deleted text for an individual user.

Can a bot recover deleted messages?
A bot cannot fetch the past content of a message it never received or recorded. A server-side logging bot can preserve messages prospectively if it is installed, configured, and has the relevant access while messages still exist. That is advance logging, not recovery.
Discord classifies Message Content as a privileged intent, which controls an app’s access to message content, embeds, attachments, and components. Discord says developers should enable a privileged intent only when the app needs it and its use is consistent with the Developer Policy. See What are Privileged Intents?.

As described in Discord’s June 2026 developer guidance, apps under 10,000 users may enable privileged intents in the Developer Portal; apps at the 10,000-user threshold are subject to review to continue access. Discord says an app owner is notified at that threshold and has 90 days to apply, with annual reapplication for continued access. Rules and portal labels can change, so developers should confirm the current privileged-intent guidance before implementing a logger. Discord also recommends interaction features such as slash commands when an app does not need to read message content. See its June 2026 developer announcement.
Data Package or logging bot: which fits your situation?
| Option | Useful for | Timing and scope | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord Data Package | Reviewing messages still represented in your account export | Requested after the fact; account-level records of messages you sent | Does not include messages you manually deleted, according to Discord Support. |
| Server logging bot | Keeping a record for future moderation needs | Must be installed and able to capture relevant content before deletion; limited to the servers and content it can access | Cannot recover messages deleted before it captured them; access and retention raise privacy considerations. |
Choosing a logging bot responsibly
If you administer a server and want records for future moderation, assess a logging tool before an incident occurs. A logger receives and stores a new copy of message content, so consider who can read the logs and how long they are kept. These are practical privacy checks, not a Discord-mandated checklist.

Community discussions have mentioned deleted-message logging bots, but those discussions do not verify any particular bot’s current features, reliability, or data practices. Evaluate vendors independently; installing a logger now will not recreate old messages.
Does Discord retain deleted messages for a limited time?
Discord’s retention article describes exceptions, but they are not a user-facing recovery window. It says certain safety-related information for accounts reported or flagged for Terms of Service or Community Guidelines violations may be retained for up to 2 years. It also describes 180-day retention after deletion for certain information, including email addresses and phone numbers, for trust and safety purposes. Those figures concern specified information and purposes; they do not mean deleted message text is available in a user’s export or can be restored on request. See Discord’s retention explanation.
Quick Recap
What to avoid
- “Recovery” apps, extensions, or modified clients: Discord’s official guidance does not describe these as a way to restore deleted messages.
- Token grabbers or requests for your credentials: Do not share your Discord password, account token, or login codes with a recovery service. They are not needed to request your official Data Package.
- File-recovery utilities or storage devices: These do not retrieve text Discord says is no longer stored in Discord.
- Promises based on caching: Discord’s note that cached uploads may take time to clear is not a guarantee that deleted message text can be recovered.
