If the save was deleted or overwritten everywhere, recovery is generally impossible. Stop launching the game first: new progress or automatic synchronization can replace the last usable copy.
What determines whether a deleted permadeath save can be recovered?
Recovery is not a file-repair trick that works on every deletion. It depends on finding a copy from before the deletion, corruption, or overwrite. That copy may be on the same computer, another computer, a cloud service, a console backup, a removable drive, or inside a game’s own backup system.

A cloud service is not necessarily a historical archive. Synchronization can replace an older good file with the deletion or with a corrupted file. Capcom’s guidance for Monster Hunter: World makes the limitation explicit: save data exists on Xbox Live Cloud and the local hard drive, but a save that was manually overwritten or deleted—or corrupted and then uploaded—cannot be recovered.

Permadeath adds a second question after the technical one: whether restoring the file is allowed by the game’s intended rules, achievement system, or community rules. A restored file can be technically valid while still invalidating a challenge run or an achievement condition.

Do this before attempting any fix
The first few minutes matter more than most recovery tools. Follow these steps in order.
- Stop launching and playing the game. Insomniac Games Support specifically warns: “If you noticed your save file is missing after booting up the game, do NOT continue playing.” Starting a new run can create a replacement file, and launching can trigger cloud synchronization.
- Prevent unnecessary synchronization. If the platform offers an offline mode or a way to pause cloud synchronization, use it before opening save-management screens. Do not delete files while a cloud conflict is unresolved.
- Make a safety copy of what remains. Copy the current local save directory, including files that look empty, damaged, or newer than expected, to separate storage. Do not move the only copy; duplicate it first.
- Record timestamps and locations. Note the last successful play session, the time the deletion was noticed, and the modified dates of local and cloud entries. These dates are essential when a conflict dialog offers more than one version.
- Look for a game-provided recovery entry. Check the Load Game menu, backup slots, recovery files, or an in-game archive before replacing anything manually.
Steam: checking cloud and local copies
Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict by date
Steam Cloud can store save games, but Valve warns that lost saves are unlikely to be recoverable and that Steam Support cannot restore them. When local and cloud files differ, Steam presents a conflict and advises choosing according to the timestamps and your last play session.
- Leave the game closed and read both sides of the conflict dialog.
- Compare the local and cloud modification times with the last session in which the permadeath run was intact.
- Select the copy whose timestamp is known to precede the deletion and whose contents correspond to that session.
- After the game opens, verify the run in the Load Game screen before playing. Create a new manual save only after confirming that the restored state is correct.
Do not choose the newest file automatically. A newer timestamp can represent an empty new run, a deletion that synchronized, or a corrupted file.

Inspect Steam’s local userdata cache
Steam keeps locally cached cloud files in platform-specific locations. Close Steam before copying files so that it cannot rewrite them during the inspection.

Inside the userdata hierarchy, identify the folder belonging to the game and copy it to separate storage. The exact game subfolder and file names are developer-defined, so do not delete or rename files merely because their names are unfamiliar. Compare dates and file sizes, and keep every candidate version until you know which one is usable.

Check an older computer
An older computer may contain progress that never synchronized. Valve notes that launching Steam on that computer can allow the older progress to sync. Because synchronization can also push the wrong state, first copy the local save directory from the older machine. Then decide which copy should become authoritative before reconnecting or launching the game.
Understand Steam’s Backup feature
Steam’s Backup feature creates restorable game backups, but inclusion of save data varies. Valve explains that third-party save locations are determined by the developer and may need to be copied back manually after restoring the game files. A restored installation therefore does not guarantee a restored permadeath run.

After creating a backup, test the backup media as Valve recommends. A backup that was never opened or restored is only an assumption, not verified protection. Keep the backup on another physical location, such as a USB hard drive or SSD, rather than on the same drive as the live save.
PlayStation and Xbox: what a prior backup can do
Console recovery depends on the console generation, the game, and the platform’s retention rules. Use the current support instructions for the specific console rather than assuming that a menu path from another generation still applies.
Activision’s support guidance states that saved-game deletion on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is permanent and cannot be undone from the console itself. Recovery requires a prior online backup or a USB backup. If no such copy exists, reinstalling the game will not recreate the deleted run.

Before restoring a console backup
- Confirm the backup date is earlier than the deletion and later than the last known good session.
- Check whether restoring the backup replaces all current local data or only selected game data.
- Preserve any remaining current data before accepting a replacement operation.
- After restoration, launch the game only far enough to verify the save list and character state.
Cloud retention and menu labels change over time, so the platform’s current documentation is the authority for the exact navigation and whether a given backup is still retained.
Game-specific backup and recovery systems
Some developers implement a recovery path that is independent of the platform cloud. These systems are not standardized; a procedure that works for one title can damage another title’s files if copied blindly.
Insomniac’s backup-save pattern
Insomniac documents a procedure in which a player starts a new game, quits during the first cutscene, and then checks the Load Game menu for a backup save. If a backup appears, the instruction is to load it and immediately create a manual save. This is a game-specific method, not a general recovery command. Do not start a new game in another title merely because this procedure exists.
A separate backup folder, as used by some games
A Dead Cells announcement describes a separate backup folder and restoring an archived file with Steam Cloud temporarily disabled. The important points are the existence of a distinct backup location and the need to prevent cloud synchronization from replacing the restored archive. The folder name, archive format, and order of operations belong to that game; they should not be assumed for another title.
What to search for in a game’s own menus and documentation
- A Load Game entry named Backup, Recovery, Archive, or Autosave.
- Multiple character or run slots with different timestamps.
- A documented save-backup folder separate from the active save folder.
- A developer instruction to disable cloud synchronization during restoration.
- A requirement to create a fresh manual save immediately after loading the recovered state.
If the developer does not document a backup slot or recovery folder, do not invent one by renaming files. Save formats can include indexes, checksums, or related metadata, and changing one file may make the entire set unreadable.

How the main recovery options compare

When cloud synchronization has already overwritten the save
The most difficult case is not a missing local file; it is a synchronized replacement. If the cloud now contains the deletion or a corrupted save, downloading it will not restore the prior state. Capcom’s guidance for Monster Hunter: World describes this outcome as unrecoverable once the deleted, overwritten, or corrupted data has been uploaded.
In this situation, stop cycling between upload and download commands. Repeated synchronization can destroy the last local candidate. Preserve every remaining copy, including files with unusual timestamps, and look for an older computer, operating-system backup, external drive, or game-specific archive.
Will restoring the file break permadeath?
There is no universal answer because the rule belongs to the individual game and, sometimes, to its community. A restored save can have three different consequences:
- Technical consequence: the game may load the character normally, or it may reject the file as inconsistent or corrupted.
- Progress consequence: the restored file may return the run to an earlier point, removing progress made after that backup.
- Rule or achievement consequence: restoring an earlier file may violate the intended permadeath challenge, invalidate an achievement condition, or conflict with a community leaderboard’s rules.
Check the game’s terms, achievement behavior, and any rules for the challenge you are following before restoring. Keep the original surviving files so that you can document which version was used. If the goal is a personal run, you can make your own decision; if the goal is a scored or community-recognized run, apply that community’s published rule.
Common failure modes and what to do
The game immediately creates a new save
Close it without playing, copy the new local folder, and then compare it with the preserved pre-launch copy. Do not assume the new file contains the old run. Check cloud conflict information and game-specific backup entries before allowing another launch.

The cloud copy is newer but clearly wrong
A newer timestamp is not proof of a good save. Treat the timestamp as one piece of evidence alongside the last known play session and the file’s contents. Keep the local and cloud candidates separate until you have selected the correct version.
The restored file does not appear in the Load Game menu
Confirm that the file was returned to the exact save location used by the game and that related files were restored together. Some games use developer-defined folders outside the standard installation directory. If the developer’s instructions require a manual save after loading a backup, follow that step; otherwise, do not alter the file format.
Steam keeps offering the same conflict
Exit the game and Steam, preserve both candidates, and avoid repeatedly selecting different sides. A conflict that returns usually means the local and cloud states still differ. Resolve the file choice deliberately, then launch once to verify the result.
A backup restores the game but not the save
Steam’s game backup may have restored installation files while excluding a third-party save directory. Locate the developer-defined save folder and copy it back only after making a safety duplicate. The game’s documentation is needed to identify the correct path.
How to prevent the next permadeath loss
Prevention is more reliable than post-deletion recovery because it preserves a known-good state before synchronization or corruption occurs.
- Create a separate copy before risky changes. Back up the save folder before a major update, computer migration, mod experiment, or file-system repair.
- Use more than one location. Keep the live save on the gaming device and a separate copy on a USB hard drive or SSD. A second location protects against drive failure and accidental replacement.
- Retain versions, not just one mirror. Keep dated copies so that an accidental deletion can be rolled back to an earlier state rather than copied everywhere.
- Test the backup. Valve recommends testing backup media after creation. Verify that the drive can be read and that the expected save files are present.
- Know the game’s storage model. Record whether the title uses Steam Cloud, a console cloud, a separate local folder, or an in-game backup slot.
- Pause synchronization during a restore. Restore the chosen copy first, verify it in-game, and only then allow cloud synchronization to resume.
An external drive cannot recover a file after every copy has been securely deleted or overwritten. Its value is that it preserves an earlier version before the incident happens.
A practical decision sequence
Use this order when you need a fast, low-risk decision:

- Verify the character and run before creating a new manual save or re-enabling synchronization.
- Decide whether the restoration complies with the game’s permadeath, achievement, and community rules.
If none of these locations contains a pre-loss copy, support documentation provides no general method for reconstructing the run. At that point, recovery is not a matter of finding the right menu; the required data no longer exists in an accessible copy.
