1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSometimes—but “glass” alone is not a safety rating. Use a container only when its base markings and product instructions specifically permit the appliance and temperature. The same set may have a glass dish approved for several uses and a plastic lid approved only for short microwave reheating. Anchor Hocking’s instructions, for example, allow its specified food-storage dishes in a microwave without a browning element, a preheated conventional or convection oven up to 425°F, and a refrigerator or freezer. They also require thawing before moving the dish from freezer storage to a hot oven or microwave. Other products, including the company’s pantry jars, have different restrictions.
The quick answer by appliance
| Appliance or use | What the cited Anchor Hocking food-storage instructions allow | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Microwave | Yes, for specified food-storage glass | Microwave must not have a browning element; do not heat an empty or nearly empty dish, overheat fats, or let the dish touch the oven walls. |
| Conventional oven | Yes, in a preheated gas or electric oven up to 425°F | Do not use on a stovetop, under a broiler, in a toaster oven, on a grill, or over another direct heat source. |
| Convection oven | Yes, for the specified dishes up to 425°F | Use the same preheating, clearance, condition, and direct-heat precautions. |
| Refrigerator or freezer | Yes, for the specified food-storage dishes | Do not transfer the dish directly from freezer to a preheated oven or microwave; thaw first. |
| Plastic cover | Microwave reheating only, under stated precautions | Vent a gap, limit reheating to 60 seconds, remove the cover afterward, and never use it in a conventional oven, toaster oven, broiler, or on a stovetop. |
These are product-specific instructions, not a universal rating for every glass container. Read the exact model’s markings and care sheet before use. Anchor Hocking says its pantry glass jars are for dry food and are not intended for freezer, oven, or microwave use. See the company’s care and use instructions and food-storage overview.

How to identify whether your container is approved
Start with the bottom of the dish, then check the packaging or the manufacturer’s current manual. Look for explicit microwave, oven, and freezer wording or symbols. “Glass,” “heat resistant,” and “food safe” do not by themselves authorize heating or freezing. A storage jar, drinking glass, bakeware dish, and food-storage container can be made from glass yet have entirely different intended uses.
Record the limits separately for each component:
- Dish: note every permitted appliance and the maximum oven temperature.
- Lid: check whether it is plastic, silicone, or another material and whether its instructions differ from the dish.
- Condition: reject anything chipped, cracked, or noticeably scratched.
- Shape and size: confirm that the container leaves clearance from microwave walls and oven walls and door.
If there is no marking and you cannot locate instructions for the exact product, do not assume it is safe for an appliance. Use it for room-temperature or refrigerator storage instead, or replace it with a clearly labeled model.

Using a glass container in the microwave
Before heating
- Confirm that the dish is marked or documented as microwave-safe. The cited Anchor Hocking permission applies to a microwave without a browning element.
- Inspect the glass for chips, cracks, impact marks, and deep scratches. Damage can weaken it and make later breakage more likely.
- Put food in the dish; never microwave it empty or nearly empty. Avoid heating oil, butter, or other fats until they overheat.
- Choose a microwave large enough to leave space around the dish. A working turntable is preferred; if there is no turntable, turn the dish manually at regular intervals.
While and after heating
Keep the dish from touching the microwave’s sides. Follow the microwave owner’s manual as well as the container instructions, since the appliance’s modes and browning elements can change the risk. Use dry oven mitts or potholders when removing hot glass. Set it on a dry, heat-resistant surface rather than a wet or cold one.
How to use the plastic cover
A cover is not automatically covered by the dish’s microwave rating. Anchor Hocking says its food-storage plastic covers may be used for reheating only when you leave a gap for steam to escape. Do not reheat a cover for more than 60 seconds, remove it after reheating, and open it away from your face and body to reduce the chance of a steam burn. The cover is not for a conventional oven, stovetop, broiler, or toaster oven.
Using glass in a conventional or convection oven
Temperature and preheating
For the specified Anchor Hocking food-storage dishes, the permission is a preheated gas or electric conventional oven or convection oven up to 425°F. That number belongs to those instructions; do not transfer it to an unmarked dish, another product line, or a lid. A preheated oven reduces the severity of temperature changes compared with placing cold glass into a rapidly heating cavity.

Heat sources that are off-limits
Do not place the dish on a stovetop burner, over a flame, under a broiler, in a toaster oven, on a grill, or against another direct heat source. Keep clearance between the container and the oven walls and door, and use an oven of a suitable size. Remove any plastic cover unless its own instructions expressly permit the particular oven (the cited covers do not).
Cooking foods that release liquid
Before cooking foods likely to release liquid, add enough liquid to cover the bottom of the dish, as the manufacturer advises. Do not add cold liquid to glass that is already hot. When cooking ends, use dry mitts or potholders and place the dish on a dry trivet or other dry, heat-resistant surface.
Freezer storage and the freezer-to-heat trap
The cited food-storage dishes may hold food in a refrigerator or freezer. Freezer approval does not mean that the dish can go straight into a hot appliance. Anchor Hocking specifically directs users to thaw food before cooking or reheating and says not to move the dish directly from a freezer to a preheated oven or microwave. The temperature jump can create severe thermal stress even when the glass is otherwise approved for each appliance separately.

Plan the transition: move the container to the refrigerator or another controlled thawing method, allow the food and glass to warm, and only then use the oven or microwave according to that appliance’s limits. Never accelerate thawing by putting a frozen dish into a hot oven simply because the dish carries both freezer and oven markings.

Thermal shock is a sudden temperature change that creates stress within the glass. Common avoidable triggers include adding liquid to a hot dish, setting hot glass on a wet or cold surface, and moving a frozen dish directly into a preheated appliance. Impact damage and scratches are additional weaknesses. Discard a dish that is chipped, cracked, or noticeably scratched rather than trying to reserve it for a “safer” appliance.
Anchor Hocking’s safety guidance says mechanical breakage from impact is its most frequent cause of failure. Its page also reports that company testing found a 40% improvement in thermal-shock resistance when it changed from borosilicate to tempered soda-lime-silicate glass over 40 years ago. That is a manufacturer-reported historical result with no publication year or underlying study supplied; it should not be treated as an independent comparison or applied to all glass containers. The same guidance states: “Always check the bottom of glassware to ensure it is microwave and oven safe, and always use dry oven mitts or potholders when removing glass from the oven or microwave.” Read the full Bakeware Facts safety information.

Dish, lid, and container type are separate decisions
Food-storage dishes
These are the products for which the cited microwave, oven, and freezer permissions apply. Even within one manufacturer, verify the exact range and model. Anchor Hocking’s food-storage overview names TrueSeal, TrueLock, and SnugFit ranges and describes its glass containers as serving freezer, refrigerator, oven, and microwave use, with thawing before cooking or reheating.
Pantry jars
Pantry glass jars are a different category. The company’s care instructions identify them as dry-food storage and exclude freezer, oven, and microwave use. Do not infer appliance permission from a similar appearance or from a lid that fits another container.

A safe-use checklist
- Read the base marking and exact manual before the first use.
- Confirm the appliance type and maximum temperature, not just a general “heat-safe” claim.
- Inspect for chips, cracks, scratches, and impact damage every time.
- Leave clearance from microwave walls and oven walls and door.
- Never use a food-storage dish on direct heat, under a broiler, in a toaster oven, or on a grill unless the product instructions explicitly allow it.
- Do not heat an empty or nearly empty dish or overheat fats in the microwave.
- Thaw frozen food before cooking or reheating.
- Keep a microwave cover vented, limit it to 60 seconds of reheating, and remove it afterward.
- Use dry mitts or potholders and a dry, heat-resistant place to set down hot glass.
What to buy when your container is unmarked
Search for glass food-storage containers whose exact model is labeled microwave-, oven-, and freezer-safe, then read the manual for temperature and lid limits. Compare products on four practical axes: the appliance markings and maximum oven temperature; whether the lid is microwave-safe, oven-safe, or neither; whether freezer storage and thawing requirements are stated; and the container’s condition, capacity, and shape. A clearly documented product is safer to evaluate than an inherited or unmarked jar, even if both appear to be made from similar glass.
Keep dry oven mitts or potholders available. A heat-resistant trivet is also useful because hot glass should not rest directly on a wet or cold countertop.
