Yes—you can write code using Arabic. Depending on the project, Arabic may be used for keywords and identifiers in a language with its own interpreter or compiler, or the Arabic source may be translated into a language such as Python. How much is localized varies: a project may accept Arabic names while keeping English-style punctuation, and editor support for right-to-left text can be as important as the language itself.
What does it mean to program in Arabic?
There is no single architecture called an “Arabic programming language.” The phrase can describe several approaches, from translating familiar programming constructs to building an Arabic-first language or teaching environment.
Arabic source translated into another language
Ya (ي) describes a system that converts Arabic text to Python and executes the result. Its page shows Arabic keywords, identifiers, and Arabic-Indic numerals, and recommends an editor that supports right-to-left text. It lists Mac OS or Ubuntu and Python 3 as prerequisites. These are the project’s own descriptions, not an independent compatibility test for arbitrary Python programs. Ya project site
An Arabic-first interpreter or compiler
Alang describes itself as experimental: it has Arabic keywords and identifiers, an interpreter written in Java, and an ANTLR4 grammar. Its repository lists Java 17 or later and Windows Terminal or PowerShell among its requirements. Syntax highlighting and an interactive REPL are listed as future plans, not current features. An educational environment
Alif2 presents itself as an open-source educational Arabic programming language. Its official page lists Alif2 Studio for Windows, GNU/Linux, and macOS, along with documentation and a video learning series. The page-listed releases differ by operating system and may change, so check the official page for current availability. Alif2 official site
Research prototypes and language designs
Not every example is a ready-to-use product. An APL research paper describes using a large language model as a “semi-compiler” to convert Arabic code to Python, with a Python library and simple playground. That approach is a research proposal, not evidence of deterministic or production-ready compilation. APL paper

A separate paper describes Phoenix, a compiled Arabic object-oriented language with a preprocessor, scanner, parser, semantic analyzer, code generator, and linker. It is useful as an example of compiler design, not as a recommendation for a currently supported tool. Phoenix paper

Replacing English keywords with Arabic words is only one possible change. A 2023 ACM SPLASH-E paper applies a localization framework to 13 programming languages and considers features such as identifiers, constructs, numerals, punctuation, diagnostics, diacritics, alternative keywords, multilingual code, and right-to-left support. It also notes that its selection may omit languages and that it does not evaluate the editors used to write them. “A Framework for the Localization of Programming Languages”
That distinction matters in practice. A language could accept Arabic variable names but still require conventional punctuation and statement structure. Another might support Arabic symbols, numerals, or right-to-left text. The paper’s examples discuss Ebda3’s hamza-sensitive keywords and partial Arabic punctuation support, and Qalb’s support for Arabic symbols, numerals, and right-to-left text. These are observations in the paper’s 2023 analysis, not a current status check of those projects.

Arabic-language choices can also affect which spellings a program accepts. Hamza and letter variants, for example, are language-design decisions; Arabic should not be treated as a single uniform input experience across dialects or related languages.
Why right-to-left editor support matters
Arabic is displayed from right to left, but text is stored in logical order. A line of code can combine Arabic words with left-to-right digits, English names, and operators, creating bidirectional text. Unicode Standard Annex #9 specifies the bidirectional algorithm and explains that Arabic shaping depends on neighboring characters. Unicode Standard Annex #9
As a result, an editor needs to do more than display Arabic letters. Directionality and shaping affect whether code is readable and whether cursor movement, selection, punctuation, copying, and error locations behave as expected. The 2023 localization paper flags alignment, text direction, and connected Arabic letter forms as editing concerns, while cautioning that its language comparisons do not themselves assess editors.

Start with what you want to build and learn. Then check the project’s current documentation rather than assuming that Arabic syntax alone guarantees familiar libraries, editor support, or production suitability.

- Execution model: Find out whether the project interprets Arabic source, compiles it, or translates it into another language. Translation to Python, for example, makes Python part of the stated execution path; a native compiler or Java interpreter has different requirements.
- Depth of localization: Check whether Arabic is supported for keywords only, or also for identifiers, numerals, punctuation, diagnostics, documentation, and mixed Arabic/Latin code.
- RTL editing: Look for evidence that the editor handles Arabic shaping, directionality, punctuation, cursor movement, and errors correctly in mixed-script source.
- Access and prerequisites: Verify supported operating systems, runtime requirements, editor or plugin needs, and installation instructions on the official project page.
- Learning and ecosystem: Look for examples, documentation, libraries, support, and a maintained route to running the programs you want to make. The sources available here do not establish a consistent independent comparison of current projects.
Do you need an Arabic keyboard?
No dedicated physical keyboard is required by the examples described here. If your operating system can switch to an Arabic input layout, you can use that to enter Arabic; a USB keyboard with Arabic key labels is optional convenience, not a language requirement. What matters for programming is being able to enter the characters the language accepts and having an editor that displays them legibly.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The project descriptions establish that Arabic-oriented programming tools and designs exist, but they do not establish comparative performance, adoption, or production readiness. The project feature claims have not been independently verified here, and no consistent current benchmark across the examples is available. Treat project pages as starting points: check their documentation, supported environments, and recent releases before depending on a tool for a course or a project.
