Check the ports and manuals on both devices: a monitor’s ordinary HDMI input does not automatically support HDMI ARC or eARC. When the monitor lacks a usable audio output, connecting the computer or console directly to the soundbar may work instead.
Check the ports before connecting anything
Audio needs a path from an output on the monitor or source device to a matching input on the soundbar. A port’s shape alone does not tell you whether it sends or receives audio. Look up the exact monitor and soundbar models, then confirm the port directions and supported features in their manuals. BenQ’s monitor audio guidance and no-audio troubleshooting advice both emphasize checking the model and selecting the correct output.

For example, ASUS lists an earphone jack on its BE27ACGN monitor, while an LG SJ9 specification sheet from 2017 lists a portable 3.5 mm input. Those examples show that matching ports exist on some products, not that every monitor and soundbar can be paired this way.

Choose a connection your devices both support
| Connection | Works when | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | The monitor has an audio output and the soundbar has a compatible analog input. | A straightforward wired option, but verify that the monitor jack is output—not input—and select the soundbar’s AUX input if required. The ASUS and LG examples above are model-specific. |
| HDMI ARC/eARC | The monitor explicitly supports ARC/eARC and the soundbar has a compatible ARC/eARC port. | Do not assume a standard HDMI input can return audio. LG’s ARC setup instructions describe connecting the labeled ARC ports; check the monitor manual because many setup guides address TVs. |
| Optical | The monitor or source has optical audio out and the soundbar has optical in. | Check for an output and input at the correct ends. Samsung lists optical among its soundbar connection options. |
| Bluetooth | The monitor or source can transmit Bluetooth audio and the soundbar can receive it. | No cable is needed, but support and pairing steps vary by device. Confirm both ends support Bluetooth audio, not merely Bluetooth for another purpose. |
| Direct source to soundbar | The computer, console, or media device has an audio connection the soundbar accepts. | Useful when the monitor has no audio output. If video must pass through the soundbar to the monitor, check supported video formats and pass-through capabilities first. |
Set up the connection
- Identify the models. Write down the monitor and soundbar model numbers, then consult both manuals for port names, directions, and supported audio features.
- Choose a matching route. Confirm an audio output on the monitor or source and a compatible input on the soundbar. For a 3.5 mm connection, do not assume a headphone-shaped jack has the direction you need.
- Connect the cable or pair the devices. For ARC/eARC, use the ports explicitly labeled ARC/eARC at both ends. For optical, connect optical out to optical in. For Bluetooth, put the soundbar in pairing mode and select it in the transmitting device’s Bluetooth audio list.
- Select the audio output and soundbar input. Choose the relevant output in the monitor or source settings, then select the matching soundbar input. LG’s ARC guide describes selecting HDMI ARC as the display output and the corresponding ARC function on the soundbar; menu labels vary by model. Samsung’s guide covers selecting soundbar sources for its documented connection methods.
- For a computer, check the operating system’s output device. If audio travels over HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C to a monitor, the computer may need to send sound to that display. BenQ’s troubleshooting guidance describes checking the selected audio output device.
- For a console or other external source, verify the whole signal chain. If the source connects to the soundbar and video continues to the monitor, confirm that the source, soundbar pass-through, and monitor support the video format you intend to use before buying an adapter or extractor.
If there is no sound
- Make sure the soundbar is powered on, unmuted, and set to the input used by the cable or wireless connection.
- Reseat the cable and check the labels at both ends; confirm that the selected ports are the intended output and input.
- Check the monitor manual to establish whether its audio jack is an output. A jack’s appearance does not prove its direction.
- On a computer, confirm that the operating system is sending audio to the intended device. For HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C audio through a monitor, check whether the monitor is selected as the output.
- For ARC/eARC, confirm explicit support on both devices, use the labeled ports, select the display’s ARC output, and set the soundbar to its ARC source.
- If the monitor has no usable audio output, try routing audio from the computer or console directly to a compatible soundbar input. Check video pass-through and format support before relying on that arrangement.
